Trams to the Trafford Centre a step nearer as £300m building fund is signed off...

Work planned to begin next year with Metrolink track up and running by winter 2019

Catching a tram to the Trafford Centre is a step closer to reality after town hall bosses signed off the £300m needed for a new line.

The Metrolink extension - made possible in part by the Greater Manchester’s ’s devolution deal - is scheduled to be open by 2019.

It shows six new stops, planned near to key destinations - Wharfside for Old Trafford, the Imperial War Museum North, Trafford Park Village, Parkway, EventCity and the intu Trafford Centre.

Council leaders from the region’s 10 authorities have now officially signed off the cash needed for its construction, which they hope will start next year.

Most of that cash is coming via the Greater Manchester devolution deal, agreed with George Osborne last year, although Trafford council is also putting up £20m in capital funding.

In total, the entire project will cost £350m, £37m of which had already been signed off by the council leaders to allow 10 trams to be bought.

But this latest move marks a milestone in the overall scheme.

The next stage will see detailed designs drawn up - and an official government hearing in July to request the final sign-off from transport ministers.

Trafford council leader Sean Anstee said: “This is a really welcome milestone to secure the deliver of Metrolink to Trafford Park, which is a key strategic transport priority for Trafford and the wider Greater Manchester community.”

A public consultation on the 5.5km line, which closed last November, showed 89pc backing for the scheme.

It forms part of the super-council’s emerging vision for Greater Manchester over the next three decades.

Trafford Park provides more employment than anywhere outside the city centre - with at least 1,500 business and more than 30,000 jobs.

It is hoped workers in other parts of the conurbation, including those such as Rochdale and Oldham that have recently been added to the Metrolink network, will be able to access those jobs thanks to the new link - boosting the region’s economy as a whole and helping employment.

Its success in doing so will help determine future waves of cash from the government for other projects, under the terms of last year’s devolution deal.

Work begins on new bus station
30 April 2015

Work to build Radcliffe’s new bus station has started.

Contractors Bethell Construction Ltd have now cleared the Dale Street site, which was previously a car park.

Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM) and Bury Council have been working in partnership to develop an enhanced bus station in Radcliffe town centre, which aligns with the Radcliffe Town Centre Masterplan and the council’s regeneration aspirations for Radcliffe. When completed, it will replace the current facility which currently stands on the opposite side of Dale Street.

The project will deliver increased levels of comfort and security plus high quality upgrades to the surrounding environment, including a high quality public realm, stepped seating areas, stair and ramp access, and high quality planting

Deansgate-Castlefield Update....

Here it is. The first lot of metal work in. Quite a lot of it too. The words "Where the <your choice of word> did that come from?!?!" come to mind.

The tram end tower of exhibition bridge has also been covered with more scaffold going up around the steps.

Temporary fencing is now part-up along where the new ramp is going in.

The concrete pour has started at the base of the other set of steps.

Another angle of the devil's horns.

Talking about the ramp going in, some sort of base structure has gone in. This isn't full height so I'm not sure if it's concrete (it'd be a big pour and they'd have got the reinforcement in very quick!) or if it's just stone. Whatever it is, it has got ducting in.

The stone installation on the path is ongoing.

You can just see the temporary fence in the background on this pic.

More of the little fence alongside the track towards the car-park is going in.

Lamp post waiting for installation (presumably) on the new platform.

And this happened a few weeks back but the metalwork of the viaduct over at the MOSI end has been painted on the outer side (yet to be completed on the inner side). It's in a brown and cream finish.

Finally, have a bonus pic of a very wet lock 92.

Strangely, all the shelter supports have come down

I think someone has mentioned this but I didn't get it in my last photos, the barriers are gone at both ends of this section of line now

And re-bar is going in the corner where the divers' hut will be

Unrelated. Anyone know who the drivers are that aren't in metrolink uniform that have been around over the past few weeks? The one I had this morning was very good. Extremely quick and smooth.

With cover on stairs heading to arena now gone you get good view of platform 1/2 and Metrolink station at Victoria as well as ticket barriers.

Metrolink station

Couple of picture at Victoria stop

Maybe more then couple.

After looking at new platform I probably agree with Metro-man by saying that new platform will open on 27th May as everything look nearly finishes on new platform.

And it could been a lot better destination if it were this station destination.

One or two sunny shots taken at the north end of 2CC today. Put on Photobucket temporarily due to the ongoing upload problems with Flickr.

Rails are in place part way between Withy Grove and Todd Street on the outbound now.

and the work has started to complete this section which can be seen marked in red paint

Outside City Buildings the rails are in place also and a start has been made on the embedding.

Further along in Exchange Square more progress with the next section of the inbound slab in preparation.

The central slab for the platform has been extended today towards Market Street.

To complement j616s post about Deansgate Castlefield here are a few of my own taken at Deansgate Castlefield yesterday afternoon.

Nothing different obviously to what j616s recorded.

The street level foundation for the bridge/stairs.

P1110730 by Steve Hyde, on Flickr

P1110731 by Steve Hyde, on Flickr

At the top the foundation for the landing.

P1110732 by Steve Hyde, on Flickr

Blockwork is appearing between the steel uprights along the back wall.

P1110735 by Steve Hyde, on Flickr

The signal at the Cornbrook end has re-appeared.

P1110737 by Steve Hyde, on Flickr

as already noted the low profile Point Indicator for the west end crossover.

P1110739 by Steve Hyde, on Flickr

As j616s says looking at the railhead it would appear that there have been movements through the outbound line recently. So perhaps there have been a couple of test trams.
