Victoria today during the partial shutdown.

Plenty happening at Victoria today and very busy in more ways than one.

The station and trams arriving from the north were busy as these show.

Outside Paving work continued around Long Millgate.

I' not sure what these 2 guys were doing as by the time I looked outside they had come back down to ground level.

P1110899 by Steve Hyde, on Flickr

The major work was the start of TMS installation and the job was flooded with installation teams. Axle counters, point machines and signal/PPI posts were all in evidence.

The scene from Long Millgate -

and inside.

Installing an axle counter head on the curve into the centre platform line. Note the signal pole lying beside the rails.

Working on the points. There is a point machine hiding under that cardboard. Traction bonding is being added as well. A PPI pole lies alongside and the bolts for its base are in place in the concrete.

Another set of points receive a point machine.

Axle counter heads again.

On what will be the new outbound line.

On the centre line.

The blue flashing SPAS beacons were being installed as well.

All in all a very busy scene and a lot already done with more than 48 hours to go yet.

A very quick look at 2CC again, both Exchange Square end and St Peters Square.

Another short section of the inbound foundation slab has been laid at the bottom of Withy Grove. One side of the outbound shuttering is in place.

More concrete poured at what I think is the crossover site

and lying adjacent the component parts of the crossover.

In St Peters Square the pointwork I saw laid out on Thursday has now been taken up and laid to one side as I expected.

Its place has been taken by reinforcement steel.

At Deansgate Castlefield the main activity was the start of removing the scaffolding over the footbridge entrance revealing what looks like a dark grey finish.

Elsewhere an additional ticket machine has appeared on the inbound side of the island platform.

P1110861 by Steve Hyde, on Flickr

Paving and cladding continues.

Although I didn't walk down to the city end workers can be seen at that end laying slabs.

This would be an interesting proposition as TfGM are very interested in a Tram-Train project in South Manchester.

DC Update...

Tiling on the ramp looks almost done. The holes along the side have been drilled for the metal & glass wall between it and the stairs. And the hand-rails have even gone in on the steps.

The shelter install has started (again...)

The metal frame of the glass wall between the platform and ramp has started going in at the viaduct end.

As has already been noted, the scaffold is starting to come down around exhibition bridge. It has been painted off-black (I think the same/similar to the shelter metalwork).

This is different to the render which showed it painted off-white.

I didn't get a photo but when passing on the tram, I could see that about half of the foot-bed of the bridge is now tiled and the metal supports for the glass railings are now in. So there's not a huge amount left to do on this bridge.

The ever progressing fence along the footpath...

And, finally, piles of top-soil have now turned up for the grassed areas.

I'm a little bit ↑ right now but photo comparisons like this really send a chill down my spine. Look at the guy in the original photo, standing outside the entrance to the station looking directly at the camera. The architecture of the doorway hasn't at all changed between that photo and the Google Streetview photo, the archway still looks the same - it's remained static. Meanwhile, that guy (who looks relatively young in the original photo) has gone on, had kids, seen his kids grow old, potentially suffered a bit and then had happy moments too... he's basically lived his entire life, died, and his kids have died, their kids have died... and countless of his future generations have also died.... meanwhile, this station, that archway, has remained static. And someone could be standing in that exact spot right now and they wouldn't have a clue, not a clue, that 150 years ago (just a guess..?) there was a man standing there, in a bowler hat, staring at a camera.

And if he could see what the world has become, if he was transported to 2015, he would be shit scared. He'd look to his left and see the Beetham Tower - which would have been by far the world's tallest building in his day. He'd have seen electric trams; a world away from the horse drawn one parked up next to him. Cars thundering down Deansgate - and lets not even consider what he would've thought about Deansgate Locks on a Saturday night!!

And yet... that station, that archway.. has remained the same, like a time capsule.

Here is a little video I've put together of the recently cascaded Class 319 Electric trains that Northern Rail have had in service for little over a month now, and a week at Manchester Victoria (Watch in 1080p for best experience... it's worth it!). Enjoy!

And here are a few photographs:
