"New transport interchange is an eye-catching gateway to Wythenshawe"...

Quote:
An impressive new gateway will welcome visitors to Wythenshawe after the opening of the town’s new £6m transport interchange next week.

The new interchange will open its doors on Wednesday 29 July, providing a modern, high quality gateway to the town centre with improved safety and security for both bus and Metrolink passengers.

The development was carried out by contractors Kier on behalf of Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM) and has provided a brand new TfGM Travelshop, cycle parking facilities, enhanced CCTV and passenger information systems.

The interchange is environmentally-friendly thanks to 72 solar panels that have been fitted to the roof. These will provide about 10 per cent of the energy needed for the entire building.

Chair of the Transport for Greater Manchester Committee, Councillor Andrew Fender, said: “This is a hugely significant landmark for the town. The interchange will provide better links between buses and trams, improving access to jobs across the area, at the airport and in the city centre for the people of Wythenshawe.

“Passengers can now experience the improved facilities for themselves and enjoy the benefits of a fully integrated, accessible and eco-friendly transport hub.”

Councillor Kate Chappell, Manchester City Council's executive member for the environment, said: "The opening of this new interchange is a major step for the area, making it easier for people to access jobs and services, while the building itself represents real investment in the area and demonstrates that major public facilities can operate in an environmentally friendly manner."

Mike Kane MP for Wythenshawe and Sale East said: “The opening of the transport interchange is the next link in the chain of regeneration for Wythenshawe.

“Built by local apprentices it has been about jobs and employment from the outset. It will now open up further access to jobs and employment for the people of Wythenshawe and continue our impressive story of rebirth and growth as a Town.”

The interchange supports the wider regeneration of Wythenshawe town centre, with the release of land occupied by the current bus station on Rowlandsway playing a key role in that

Today there were 2 guys attacking the base of the big temporary OLE pole with a Stihl saw.Hope they don't take too much off it as that pole has a lot of weight on it!

P1060949 by Steve Hyde, on Flickr

It looked to me as though they were reducing it in height to allow the track slab to be cast over it. Those inbound rails will pass right over it.

P1060953 by Steve Hyde, on Flickr

No its alright the pole will be OK as long as he stays there

It looks as though a start is being made on the paving outside the football museum.

Another gap starts to be closed as work starts on the base at Fennel Street Corporation Street.

Although not too much has changed on Exchange Square platform since my last visit, I did notice that the platform walls are clad just like those at Deansgate Castlefield although the stone is a different colour. Presumably the surface will be clad in the same manner.

They had made a start on stripping the road surface on Cross Street.

By the time I was walking back to Victoria this section was cleared. Inside the acoustic fences United Utilities were still working.

Further along Cross Street there seem to be a mix of MPT and utility work sites.

But beyond King Street it's back to MPT work sites.

P1060994 by Steve Hyde, on Flickr

and what are they exposing as they strip the surface?

P1060996 by Steve Hyde, on Flickr

Tram track and quite a lot of it.

Near Princess Street new track is being assembled. It looks as though they will install part of the new inbound track over Princess Street whilst they are working here now even though it won't be used for over 12 months. Makes sense to it now I suppose.

Now down on Lower Mosley Street more visible progress.

The new inbound track slab and new kerbing going in.

P1070021 by Steve Hyde, on Flickr

The outbound/single line.

P1070023 by Steve Hyde, on Flickr

P1070024 by Steve Hyde, on Flickr

Over on the inbound side we now have bits of the 1CC/2CC inbound points on site. Again down here it looks as though they are douing as much of the final job now as possible to minimise later work.

P1070025 by Steve Hyde, on Flickr

and these will be interesting (well they are if you are into track). They look as though they will be pre-sorting points with a bit of interlaced track across Windmill Street.

P1070026 by Steve Hyde, on Flickr

P1070031 by Steve Hyde, on Flickr

The point blades will be where all the ducts come up through the slab and the crossing will be the other side of Windmill Street roughly where it is lying in the photo. This avoids having the points in the part of the road under road traffic but keeps the width needed to a minimum.

P1070032 by Steve Hyde, on Flickr

These 2 screen shots from Google Maps show the arrangement as used in Croydon, this is much longer than what will be on lower Mosley Street.

and finally it looks as though this area will probably be the site of the single line turnout as it looks to me as though the gap between the 2 track slabs will be filled to make a solid base.

Guided busway progress update
24 July 2015

Cllrs Mark Aldred and Andrew Fender visit the guided busway in Tyldesley

Leading transport councillors have welcomed progress on the region’s first guided busway after visiting the construction site in Tyldesley.

Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM) is developing the 4.5 mile guided busway between Leigh and Ellenbrook as part of its wider bus priority package.

It will form part of a much longer 14 mile route linking Leigh, Atherton and Tyldesley with Salford, Manchester city centre and beyond.

Construction work is now advancing well along the guided section with the track being laid at the rate of around 150 metres per day. Most of the construction work on the busway is expected to be completed before the end of the year, with services to passengers starting early in 2016 following a period of testing and commissioning
