They will be Pendolinos, but not Class 390 - a modern design of Pendolinos from Alstom Italy, instead.

"Friday 28 August: Metrolink services resume through St. Peter’s Square"...
Quote:
Metrolink services will resume through St Peter’s Square from Friday 28 August, in time for the bank holiday weekend and Manchester Pride celebrations.

Tram services will run through the square in both directions on a new single line of track as work to build a brand new stop takes place nearby.

Trams will stop at St Peter’s Square when a much bigger, better stop opens close to the Cenotaph in autumn 2016.

There will be changes to services from Friday 28 August with trams running on the following routes:

Altrincham to Etihad Campus
Altrincham to Deansgate-Castlefield
Bury to Piccadilly
Bury to East Didsbury
Eccles-MediaCityUK to Deansgate-Castlefield
Rochdale to Ashton-under-Lyne
Manchester Airport to Cornbrook

For more detailed information on service frequencies and hours of operation from 28 August, please click here.

Free city centre Metroshuttle bus services will continue to offer frequent links around the city and step free walking routes through St Peter’s Square will also be fully signposted.

Peter Cushing, Metrolink Director at Transport for Greater Manchester, said: “I’d like to thank our customers for their patience over the summer while we’ve worked to build this single line of track through the square.

“It means we can keep trams running through the city – getting people to work, shopping and events over the coming year – while we build a brand new tram stop right alongside the new line.

“We’re pleased to be on track to get the work finished in time for the bank holiday and Manchester Pride celebrations, of which we’re a proud supporter.”

The demolition of the old St Peter’s Square tram stop will make way for more public space for everyone to enjoy as part of the council’s exciting flagship redevelopment of the square.

Video from Farnworth, this TBM claimed to be Britain's biggest. Do you agree with this?

The (sprung) points machines are even in place

There are a few small sections left to go in here...

And at the bottom of the GMex viaduct

These sections all finish in expansion sections at the bottom of the viaduct. One of the new sections which is on-site ready for installation

The other end of the previously photographed footpath(?) that's been installed alongside the single line. Though I have just noticed it is on the other side at this end...

And I've also just noticed in my photos that from above you can see the crossing, where the path snakes around an temporary OHLE base and a further section heading towards One St Peter's Square. I had originally taken this picture as there are 4 raised cabins at the bottom of it. These look to be slightly nicer versions of what we saw at Victoria. So it seems we will once again see the beloved token. Though it begs the question, why 4? I'm guessing they wouldn't fit in between the tracks so there'll be one on either side at each end with the marshals carefully crossing the raised rails to hand over the token.

The other end of the path now has some temporary fencing and retention in place between it and the platform slab.

The other points machine

The rails at this end have now been cut to length but are yet to be welded

That said, at both ends some progress has been made on drilling and bolting for the retention brackets.

Over at the Cross Street site, both ends of the tent were open and the hole is filled. Looks like the exhumation of the bodies has been completed.

Temporary OHLE bases have appeared at the end of Market Street. I'm guessing these are for the termination of the lines when Exchange Square stop opens until it is joined to the rest of the 2CC.

Speaking of Exchange Square, the horizontal sections of platform are now being installed. The third was being craned into place while I was passing.

That yellow bar sitting on the tracks has a vertical section on the platform side behind the sign/workers. It seemed to be for checking the platform hight against the rails. I guess this is the bit of kit responsible for how accurate the platforms are against the tram floors.

There were two more upright sections of the platform on the flat-bed waiting to go in at this end.

If you ever get to a match at the Etihad and it all gets a bit boring, you can now look across to the Central Park Metrolink stop. Unfortunately passing trams are not visible

Deansgate Rail Station set for revamp
14 August 2015

Work to provide improvements at Deansgate railway station will begin next week.

From Monday 17 August, work will start on refurbishing the station entrances and access routes by upgrading the floors, walls and ceilings as well as the lighting and signage. The work will build on substantial structural floor repairs that have already been carried out by Network Rail.

The work is being carried out by Northern Rail using Department for Transport National Stations Improvement Programme (NSIP) funding.

The scheme was developed by Network Rail, Northern Rail and TfGM to complement TfGM’s work to modernise the Exhibition footbridge connecting the station with the nearby Metrolink stop, which completed in June this year

Much of the OHLE support equipment for the single line (and final installation where appropriate) has now gone in. Just waiting on wires. Finishing of the single line has also progressed.

An OHLE pole has appeared on one of the temporary bases under the Arndale Food Court

Another foundation has also gone in at the other end of the Exchange Square stop

I had another walk along the 2CC route from Princess Street to Victoria today.

They seem to have extended the worksite at the Albert Square end of Cross Street round the corner into Princess Street now. A fair bit of additional old rail has been recovered.

At the Market Street junction a new pole has been erected as j616s informed us and a second temporary foundation is in place for the pole on the opposite side of Cross Street. No doubt these will be the temporary anchor poles for the wire from Victoria.
