Some more 2CC pictures from today.

Starting at the Victoria end.

The gap in the track, comparing with a photo from last week I'm not so sure the ends have been cut back yet.

We now have the first 4 OLE poles erected. These two are temporary it would seem. Most likely provided to replace the building fixings which will eventually go on the City Buildings when they have been renovated.

Two more, this time permanent ones outside the football museum.

A few daylight shots at Victoria from this afternoon.

I was told that the car park is due to open next week. How long for before the development starts I don't know. The guy on the gate seemed to think it was weeks rather than months, but you do have to be careful reading too much into what you are told sometimes.

One or two shots from around Deansgate Castlefield today.Something I am sure most are aware of but I thought worth sharing. In view of the forthcoming conference at Manchester Central care is needed at the moment when photographing things around Deansgate Castlefield and Lower Mosley Street. I was very politely challenged 3 times near the token handover point this afternoon, admittedly I was by the steps down from the Central forecourt to the car park. No nastiness but just a quiet word letting me know they were watching.

Anyway onto the photos.

Another set of 2CC photos this time daylight ones to complement those great night ones form j616s.

Starting at Victoria where as j616s says the curved rails are now in place at Long Millgate. Still some final aligning to attend to though at the station end.

P1140564 by Steve Hyde, on Flickr

Using a bit of brute force to align this one properly.

P1140562 by Steve Hyde, on Flickr

This doesn't look too bad.

P1140560 by Steve Hyde, on Flickr

But the southbound curves are still quite a bit out at the joints. But they aren't secured as yet.

P1140559 by Steve Hyde, on Flickr

P1140558 by Steve Hyde, on Flickr

Seen from Corporation Street.

P1140554 by Steve Hyde, on Flickr

P1140407 by Steve Hyde, on Flickr

P1140411 by Steve Hyde, on Flickr

Kerbs are starting to appear now at this location. Corporation street is going to be narrowed quite a bit as the track crosses.

P1140402 by Steve Hyde, on Flickr

P1140404 by Steve Hyde, on Flickr

P1140414 by Steve Hyde, on Flickr

Into Exchange Square now.

P1140417 by Steve Hyde, on Flickr

P1140418 by Steve Hyde, on Flickr

P1140420 by Steve Hyde, on Flickr

PIDS now up on the platform.

P1140424 by Steve Hyde, on Flickr

Granite paving on the platform.

P1140423 by Steve Hyde, on Flickr

and along the street level.

P1140428 by Steve Hyde, on Flickr

P1140430 by Steve Hyde, on Flickr

P1140441 by Steve Hyde, on Flickr

I noticed that the OLE foundations are only apparent on the northbound side, I am guessing that means there will be twin track cantilever poles on this side only along here.

P1140436 by Steve Hyde, on Flickr

And as we have been shown the first pole is up, hiding in the trees at the Market Street junction.

P1140440 by Steve Hyde, on Flickr

P1140444 by Steve Hyde, on Flickr

Talking of the trees, looking at the paving on the southbound side it seems pretty obvious that the trees are staying as the concrete foundation for the paving has gaps in it around the trees. Sorry, this shot isn't as clear as I had intended.

P1140443 by Steve Hyde, on Flickr

Finally on my way back to Victoria I noticed a moble platform had arrived outside the football museum whilst I was walking the route. I think we will see the first OLE headspans very soon (possibly tonight?) as the components are on site as well in these orange crates.

P1140551 by Steve Hyde, on Flickr

P1140550 by Steve Hyde, on Flickr

More from Cross Street to Lower Mosley Street to follow.

A few more 2CC updates from my visit to attend the LRTA M5000 lecture yesterday.

At Long Millgate the alignment of the final gap filling curves improves every time I see it.

P1140598 by Steve Hyde, on Flickr

Although there is still some way to go on the southbound line.

P1140599 by Steve Hyde, on Flickr

May be that hydraulic jack holding the nearside rail will be buried in mass concrete

P1140600 by Steve Hyde, on Flickr

anyway joking apart this area is certainly progressing, with kerbing and paving now in progress.

P1140606 by Steve Hyde, on Flickr

OLE work did seem to start on Wednesday evening as 3 of the poles between Long Millgate and Withy Grove now have straps on them for fixing the headspans.

P1140607 by Steve Hyde, on Flickr

Sorry these 2 are less than distinct.

P1140608 by Steve Hyde, on Flickr

P1140610 by Steve Hyde, on Flickr

More OLE equipment ready for installation.

P1140611 by Steve Hyde, on Flickr

Also more building fixing eyes have been installed now on the Arndale Centre.

P1140612 by Steve Hyde, on Flickr

P1140615 by Steve Hyde, on Flickr

The paving is well advanced

P1140618 by Steve Hyde, on Flickr

The end of the line for now.

P1140619 by Steve Hyde, on Flickr

On Cross Street the corner into Princess Street is looking good with compacted hardcore now laid.

P1140621 by Steve Hyde, on Flickr

The traffic signal controller they were wiring on Wednesday is now erected.

P1140623 by Steve Hyde, on Flickr

St Peters Square

P1140624 by Steve Hyde, on Flickr

More of the new stop area seem to be compacted now.

I wondered if they might have poles on each side. Though I noticed today there are bolts on the Arndale. You can just see the matching one for the pole in the foreground on the wall between the left and middle windows just above the shelter

Stop poles on the left. Apparently I got them perfectly lined up.... There's actually about 3 or 4 in next to the stop. They bow out at the bottom, like the ones at DC. They also aren't strait. They tilt as with other furniture in the square.

Rails awaiting concrete

The curve is being temporarily tarmaced in, by the looks of it. I seem to remember someone saying the Conservatives asked this section of roadworks be "finished" by the conference. I hope they're paying for the un-needed work...

Are people who live in outer areas that were once served by heavy rail but now have light rail generally happy with the change?

I'm not quite in that situation, as I never used the heavy rail option - a bit too far to walk, and not frequent enough. I had a car (on its last legs); and when the tram came, scrapped it. Never regretted it for a moment.

If we look at the numbers, then passenger usage on former heavy rail lines converted to tram has consistently more than doubled - true for Bury, Altrincham, and Oldham. Moreover, where passengers still have a choice (as at East Didsbury); rail boardings have gone down as the trams have taken some of their business - as well as building up business of their own. That, even though the train is a good 15 minutes quicker into the centre of town.

Where there are complaints from former rail users, they are chiefly about overcrowding - when it was a train, you could reckon to get a seat, which you never can now it is a tram; even though the fares are higher. Partly, no doubt, this is simply because trams are intended to carry a far higher proportion of standing passengers, and so run more crowded; but mainly it is complaining that a service that once was less popular (and heavily subsidised); is now much more heavily used and runs with an operating surplus from fare revenue.

The other complainants of course, are travellers in from outlying areas not reached by the tram - Hale, Knutsford - who have a much longer rail journey, now the tram has taken over their former route into town.
