I believe the British Legion held a small ceremony today at Soldiers Gate to start the Manchester area Poppy Appeal. Although I missed the ceremony I did get these photos slightly later.

The gate now has an overlay map highlighting the various memorial sites against the holes. Whether this is permanent or not I don't know.

As promised to the chap I met who follows the SSC threads and somehow recognised me.

I took a trip up as far as Crumpsall to have look at the latest section of Metrolink to be converted to TMS Line of Sight operation this afternoon. Queens Road junction through to Crumpsall was converted last weekend.

I'm afraid I don't have Johnny's skills with the through the cab shots

Approaching Queens Road stop outbound with the TMS signal at stop. Centre dot missing because no tram detected yet.

P1070675 by Steve Hyde, on Flickr

It is an RTS signal so until the driver is ready to leave it stays at stop

P1070676 by Steve Hyde, on Flickr

RTS pressed it briefly shows stop with centre dot lit (I was not fast enough to catch that), then changes to proceed.

P1070677 by Steve Hyde, on Flickr

Away we go with a pint indicator just visible at the crossover.

P1070679 by Steve Hyde, on Flickr

Just after the points there is a TMS signal controlling depot entry, with its back to us in this view.

P1070680 by Steve Hyde, on Flickr

No more TMS signals now, the next signal is the old 32 block signal at Crumpsall. We were right on the tail of another tram between Victoria and Crumpsall hence the red aspect here.

P1070683 by Steve Hyde, on Flickr

Section clear now and 32 at green 3031 leaves.

P1070685 by Steve Hyde, on Flickr

Quickly returning to red as the tram passes the signal.

P1070686 by Steve Hyde, on Flickr

The old crossover still has it's HW point machines and is clipped out of use with its indicators bagged.

P1070695 by Steve Hyde, on Flickr

Inbound the only indication of any change is a Line of Sight warning sign and 33 signal bagged.

P1070689 by Steve Hyde, on Flickr

There is a fairly drastic speed restriction after the old Woodlands Road stop with countdown markers taking the speed down to 25 mph. No doubt due to poor forward visibility.

P1070701 by Steve Hyde, on Flickr

The first signal is on the approach to Queens Road Junction near the old Limit of Shunt Signal 902. Note the old R39 signal bagged out of use and also 902 LOS bagged nearby.

P1070702 by Steve Hyde, on Flickr

Followed by another protecting the junction itself, this one is approached at stop and changes as the tram approaches.

P1070704 by Steve Hyde, on Flickr

P1070705 by Steve Hyde, on Flickr

As we approach the junction we can just make out the 2 point indicators for the facing points into the depot along with on the right the signal controlling entry to the depot from the outbound line and 39 signal bagged on the left.

P1070706 by Steve Hyde, on Flickr

Back on firm ground the tram leaves Queens Road inbound and encounters the first Irk Valley TMS signal.

P1070711 by Steve Hyde, on Flickr

A somewhat clearer view through the bridge.

P1070719 by Steve Hyde, on Flickr

P1070714 by Steve Hyde, on Flickr

Again I missed the full 5 dot stop aspect.

P1070716 by Steve Hyde, on Flickr

From above on Queens Road bridge.

P1070725 by Steve Hyde, on Flickr

P1070728 by Steve Hyde, on Flickr

Now looking over onto the depot approach/exit lines showing the new TMS signals controlling the exit. Note also the point indicator for the depot crossover.

P1070739a by Steve Hyde, on Flickr

Trams entering the depot must await instructions. There is one of these signs inbound as well but I missed the chance to photograph it.

P1070735 by Steve Hyde, on Flickr

Stop marks also for single and double trams turning back in the outbound platform which is a new facility. This move was never signalled in the old block signalling.

Given my last walk along 2CC was only 2 days ago this will be fairly brief but since I was at Victoria waiting for a train I thought I'd have a quick look.

The Long Millgate area is now looking very tidy with a road sweeper having given the 2CC track a once over

P1070757 by Steve Hyde, on Flickr

and Corporation Street now surfaced and equipped with all the tram and traffic signals through the junction.

P1070771 by Steve Hyde, on Flickr

In Exchange Square the feeder pole now has an isolator switch cubicle but still no section insulators.

P1070775 by Steve Hyde, on Flickr

Paving is moving to completion

P1070776 by Steve Hyde, on Flickr

P1070777 by Steve Hyde, on Flickr

P1070790 by Steve Hyde, on Flickr

At the Market Street termination the feeder cables are now on the poles awaiting connection and the isolator cubicle is in place.

P1070782 by Steve Hyde, on Flickr

P1070784 by Steve Hyde, on Flickr

Thales were erecting and wiring the crossover point indicators.

P1070783 by Steve Hyde, on Flickr

P1070786 by Steve Hyde, on Flickr

P1070788 by Steve Hyde, on Flickr

P1070789 by Steve Hyde, on Flickr

At Withy Grove the traffic signal controller and ancillary cubicles are in place although the junction is still under temporary signal control.

P1070795 by Steve Hyde, on Flickr

All in all a hive of activity.

A daylight walk through the 2CC works once again.

We start on Lower Mosley Street.

The formwork for the concrete embedment through the points was being assembled.

P1150506 by Steve Hyde, on Flickr

P1150508 by Steve Hyde, on Flickr

Up at the Peter Street end the start of the eastbound (or is it northbound here) 2CC curve can be seen.

P1150507 by Steve Hyde, on Flickr

P1150512 by Steve Hyde, on Flickr

P1150513 by Steve Hyde, on Flickr

P1150521 by Steve Hyde, on Flickr

In St Peters Square waterproofing membrane is being applied to the new slab.

P1150516 by Steve Hyde, on Flickr

I am still trying to sort out in my mind how this slab and the piling fits into the picture. I think though that the line of piles represents the right hand edge of the inbound track slab and perhaps the idea is to create a load bearing 'beam' which fits into the slot containing the piles so that the track slab is completely independent of the cap over the crypt. The next 2 photos were taken back to back to try to get a fix on the position of the piles with respect to the remaining rails crossing Peter Street.

In the first shot the old outbound sits roughly where the inbound 1CC will be.

P1150519 by Steve Hyde, on Flickr

For this shot I was standing on the same spot facing the opposite way so the inbound 1CC will run just to the left of the slot containing the piles.

P1150518 by Steve Hyde, on Flickr

Looking the other way.

P1150525 by Steve Hyde, on Flickr

Anyway enough of all that onto the Square itself.

The 1CC inbound and 2CC outbound bases are now cast at the north end along with the diamond crossing as j616s showed us.

P1150528 by Steve Hyde, on Flickr

In this we can just make out the 2CC formwork curving into the Square.

P1150530 by Steve Hyde, on Flickr

Approaching the crossing

P1150534 by Steve Hyde, on Flickr

work on assembling which was ongoing this afternoon.

P1150536 by Steve Hyde, on Flickr

Sorry about the fence panel.

P1150538 by Steve Hyde, on Flickr

P1150540 by Steve Hyde, on Flickr

Now over to Cross Street.

They seemed to be preparing the second curve for surfacing as a waterproof bitumen layer was being applied to the concrete.

P1150545 by Steve Hyde, on Flickr

P1150553 by Steve Hyde, on Flickr

Really not much else has changed between Princess Street and King Street.

P1150549 by Steve Hyde, on Flickr.

Next will come the section between Exchange Square and Victoria....

Starting at Market Street a survey through to Victoria this afternoon.

As we would expect having seen the press release that the OLE is now energised, the feeders at Market Street and connected now.

Concrete surfacing was being finished at the end of the track.

P1150556 by Steve Hyde, on Flickr

P1150557 by Steve Hyde, on Flickr

There seemed to be a tidy up going on between Market Street and Exchange Square to clear the track.

The PPIs now have number plates. You may have to squint to see it!

The PIDS are on at Exchange Square although only showing the default message.

Paving cut and laid out ready to set in place. Lets hope these are moved or finished tomorrow.

P1150609 by Steve Hyde, on Flickr

Corporation Street waiting for it's first tram in many years.

P1150610 by Steve Hyde, on Flickr

The Balloon Street crossing is now marked out. I do wonder how long it will take for a road vehicle to follow the 2CC route onto Long Millgate here. Despite the highway layout that left fork looks rather inviting

P1150618 by Steve Hyde, on Flickr

P1150619 by Steve Hyde, on Flickr

Fingers crossed the measurements were right here. We'll find out on Sunday.

Looking back (into the sun!) along Corporation Street.

All ready for Sunday.

"Metrolink's line to Airport hailed major success"...

Quote:
SOARING passenger numbers have seen 1.88 million journeys made on Metrolink’s multi award-winning Manchester Airport line in its first year. The 15-stop line, which was opened more than a year ahead of schedule, is celebrating its first birthday. The success of the £400m line – one of the largest locally-funded transport projects of its kind in the country – was recently recognised during the industry award season with four wins at different national award ceremonies. Transport bosses say the line – whic.

I decided to take a peek at what was going on at Victoria this afternoon. To be honest I didn't really know what to expect, although I had a sense that there would be no trams to Exchange Square during daylight.

As my train approached platform 3 I was pleasantly surprised to see 3010 peering out from the arches under Cheetham Hill Road along with more trams in the station.

P1150639 by Steve Hyde, on Flickr

P1150640 by Steve Hyde, on Flickr

However all bar one were in darkness with only tail lights showing.

P1150646 by Steve Hyde, on Flickr

A quick word with the CSRs on duty and I took a look up the platform.

P1150655 by Steve Hyde, on Flickr

I therefore reasoned that either testing with trams was being done at night, or everyone was on a break. I noticed that all the signals were still black and bagged but the point indicators were lit even though still bagged. The points were all secured for running to and from 1CC although in the outbound direction Platform D was selected.

P1150649 by Steve Hyde, on Flickr

My ideas were then somewhat changed by the appearance of a tram at the bottom of Balloon Street.

P1150656 by Steve Hyde, on Flickr

P1150661 by Steve Hyde, on Flickr

P1150663 by Steve Hyde, on Flickr

Was I going to be lucky enough to see some serious test running? The simple answer was no, the staff on the tram eventually left it and went for their break.

After a walk to Exchange Square I met up with d33206hg on the walkway to the Arena and it transpired that from what he had heard I was right that it was break time but that testing may well restart around 15:00. Not much use for me as my train was 15:13. Indeed as the train pulled in a host of orange coats appeared from the mess room under the stairs. Lets hope d33206 got some good shots.
