The now demolished Eastern Market that used used to stand at the southwest corner of Exhibition and Bourke Streets, Melbourne.

The interior during demolition.

They need to do what they have been doing in Europe since the end of World War II and rebuild some of the great lost buildings to the exact specifications. I know it's not economically viable and wouldn't happen in reality but just imagine, a rich benefactor with love and passion for a lost building or two.

Even worse it was replaced by the very ordinary Southern Cross Hotel.

The old rural bank building in Martin Place. Magnificant building it was, knocked down to make way for the State Bank Tower (Colonial Centre). It caused a huge uproar when it was pulled down.

Amazing building...
I bet this would've been our federal or at least state Parliament House today if it were still standing...

Bourke Street, Melbourne ~ 1880s.
Every building you see below is now demolished.

Parer's Crystal Cafe is now the site of the Mid City/Chinatown cinemas.

you can see in this pic why architect Barnet wanted the tower moved back towards bent st.
he wanted to see it from spring st .
\ if it was centred it wouldnt look anygood from surrounding streets.
At the time of photo-1892, the 70m clock tower was 2nd talelst bldg in Australia. (only nearby 73m GPO tower was higher.)
