Left High & Dry On Chaotic Flyover
These days, the AJC Bose Road flyover isn’t the right place to be, unless you want a bird’s eye view of the city, stuck on the ‘speedway’ for a half hour or so. Kolkata’s longest flyover is chock-a-block with cars, dawn to midnight. So are the roads below it and those that lead to the expressway at either end.
If you are among the lakhs who go through this nightmare twice a day, there’s worse in store. Once the Beck Bagan exit ramp off AJC Bose Road flyover is opened, all hell will break loose. ![]() Source: TOI |

Road extension threat to bird haven
The forest department has raised serious objections to the Kamalgazi-Baruipur extension of the Eastern Metropolitan Bypass along either side of the Adi Ganga, as it would transgress a portion of the ecologically sensitive Chintamoni Kar sanctuary, better known as Koyaler Bagan, in Narendrapur.
However, neither the irrigation department nor the Kolkata Metropolitan Development Authority (KMDA) is willing to pay heed to the objection as “there is no alternative.” “The 19-km road, which will take a lot of pressure off Netaji Subhas Bose Road, is likely to take away a part of the land stretching from daag 2140 to daag 2903. Our apprehension is that a lot of very old trees, which have been home to numerous migratory and indigenous birds, may be felled. The ecological loss will be irreparable in such circumstances,” said South 24-Parganas divisional forest officer Subhendu Bandyopadhyay. Bandyopadhyay said any development project should be worked out keeping away any forest zones. He is now thinking about taking legal measures if the government agencies ignore the plea. Forest officials said there has never been a meeting between the forest department and KMDA on this. “Instead, we have had an exchange of a series of letters, arguing our points. If there was a meeting, there could have been an acceptable solution. The sanctuary is situated at the very critical juncture of the land to be utilised for a twolane high-speed corridor. It is only 2.5 km away from Kamalgazi. The road for Baruipur-bound vehicles from Kamalgazi will require this land. The road for Garia-bound vehicles on the other bank of Adi Ganga faces no such problem. The work is progressing at a very high speed and the axe on the forest can come down any day. Besides felling of trees, the boundary fencing has to be relocated. However, director of Sundarban Biosphere Reserve, Pradip Vyas, said: “We have to assess the situation to see whether any of the major trees would require to be felled or not. Since it is a government project, all the doors for discussion are left ajar. I am confident of a solution which could be arrived at through discussion only.” Irrigation department engineer said Adi Ganga used to be under urban drainage division. Then it was transferred to irrigation department. At the end of 2007, we further transferred it to KMDA. At some stretches, there are encroachments. At Koyaler Bagan, the land is under the forest department. So we need to have meeting now for an amicable solution to the problem. KMDA’s Ganga Action Plan (GAP) division is working on the road construction. A GAP officer said it is up to the irrigation department to see if land for the road is freely available. When the construction will be closer to Koyaler Bagan, it would naturally be stalled. The irrigation department has to solve the problem to take the project forward. Source: TOI |

City colours flyover cream & rust, votes for green patch
The results are out. Kolkatans have voted for their first coloured flyover. And guess what? They have also voted, in all plurality, for a green zone below the Nabadiganta flyover.
The colour scheme for the city’s newest flyover, by popular choice, is cream with rust pillars. The bi-colour expressway, with a green patch below, will be opened to the public on January 5 by chief minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee. Last month, KMDA came up with the innovative idea of inviting the people of the city to choose the colour scheme of the newly built 500-metre, four-lane flyover that will help commuters zip across the city and New Town and ease traffic chaos at the entry point to Sector V. It has cost KMDA Rs 22 crore. “We thank the people of the city for partnering with us for this project,” Vivek Bharadwaj, chief executive officer (CEO), KMDA, said. Among the 2,363 who voted, 45.74% voted for the cream-rust colour scheme from among the 16 options available on the web. As many 256 combinations were put up and the voter could go on mouseclicking to visualise how the flyover would look like once it wore the colour of their choice. Many voted in favour of off-white, blue was the next favourite with 20% voting for it. A whopping 45% also polled for rust-coloured pillars instead of green and a host of other colours. Bharadwaj said, “Now we know exactly how the people want their flyover to look like. We also know for sure that they want the space below to look beautiful with greenery. The people have voted in favour of trees above the other options — shopping centre and art gallery.” Satarupa Sen, vice-president, Webspiders, which created the rich internet application (RIA) for the voting process, felt the same way. “What is significant is that an overwhelming majority of online voters threw their weight behind a green space,” she said. A thumping 66% voted for ‘green zone’ while 26.76% wanted a shopping centre and 7.15% an art gallery. Sen said: “This shows how environment-conscious people are and how they are trying to resist the ugliness (illegal parking and encroachment) that usually takes over the huge space below flyovers.” KMDA wanted the website to be interactive and user-friendly. A flash-based solution was used to give an animation effect. Online voters could visualise the colour scheme, the background, trees and buildings and then cast their vote. ![]() Source: TOI |

I also doubt if any of the proposed ramps will solve the congestion problem that several media groups campaigned for quoting a host of experts. As long as the majority of people don't obey traffic rules and cops don't enforce the law and are unable to manage traffic- no amount of flyovers will solve the problems. |

It cannot be an expressway as it has traffic lights. It might be converted into an expressway in future though.

In Kolkata, break traffic rules and get a rose
Sun, Dec 27 09:51 PM Kolkata, Dec 27 (IANS) An NGO here is banking on Gandhigiri to make pedestrians and drivers aware of road safety rules. Members of the NGO Topsia People's Society Sunday presented red roses to pedestrians and vehicle drivers who violated traffic rules at the busy southern intersection of Park Circus. 'We have distributed nearly 700 red roses to pedestrians and car drivers who violated traffic rules. We distributed about 300 roses within the first hour of our campaign. These statistics confirm the lack of road safety awareness among the pedestrians and drivers,' said an NGO official. 'Our Gandhigiri will raise consciousness about road safety rules. Pedestrians who are once given a rose for breaking traffic rules will be more careful in abiding by the rules,' said the official. Indo Asian News Service |

Kolkata Metropolitan Development Authority seeks consultant
The Kolkata Metropolitan Development Authority has invited tenders from eligible consultant for preparation of DPR for widening of Barrackpore-DumDum Expressway with flyover over eastern railway (Sealdah-Ranaghat section) near Buddhapark; two flyovers at No 42 railway gate and E2 railway gate (Shibmandir gate); and for bus terminus near Kalyani railway station.
The expressway is likely to directly connect the bridge over river Hoogly in the north and the Belgharia Expressway to the south. The flyovers will directly connect NH-34 with Kalyani township while the bus terminus is expected to be a model transfer place near the station for entry and exit of buses. The scope of work includes preparation of DPR and tool kit including surveying, soil testing, preparation of drawing for tender purpose etc. The DPRs are expected to be completed within 30 days from the date of work order. Last date of submission of applications is 4 January 2010. Source:projectstoday.com |
