He is burning calories on his upward journey . A newly asphalted road can be very difficult for cyclists. Having said that, I would propose demarcated cycle tracks for all our future flyovers

Airport approach options await nod
Two alternative proposals to decongest the approach to the airport have been gathering dust for months, with the authorities failing to meet even once to zero in on either.
The Airports Authority of India (AAI) and the transport department, the agencies involved in drafting the plans, are convinced that only a flyover on VIP Road can ensure a smoother flow to and from the airport but their views differ on the highroad’s alignment and use (see graphic). The AAI’s plan was submitted to the government three months ago while the transport department had finalised its blueprint a little before that. “We have submitted the proposal to the state government and will hold a meeting to finalise the design. This new flyover has been planned to ease the congestion on the road approaching the airport,” said airport director R. Srinivasan. “Both proposals have been sitting idle. A meeting between the two sides could have resolved the differences and got work started,” said an airport source. The principal secretary in the state transport department, Sumantra Chowdhury, said: “A meeting was scheduled for the second week of January but it was deferred. We will decide on a new date.” The project cost and other details can be worked out only after the authorities approve one of the proposals. The transport department’s flyover — meant for vehicles not bound for the airport — will run along VIP Road, stretching between the Jessore Road crossing and a point close to New Town Road intersection. “Once the flyover comes up, only airport-bound vehicles will use the VIP Road-stretch beyond the New Town crossing, easing the congestion to a great extent,” said a transport department official. But the AAI feels that buses and taxis will seldom use the flyover, defeating the purpose of setting it up. According to the airport’s plan, the flyover will take off from VIP Road and descend on the airport premises. Around 300 metres from that point, another flyover will take off and stretch up to the new terminal. The length of the first flyover will be 425 metres. Officials in the airport’s engineering department said a dedicated flyover for the airport would be more effective in easing the congestion that has been holding up passengers and even pilots.

Yes, they have closed few places with "KMDA" and "HCC" witten barricades. Looks like soil testing is in progress. What does it mean by "HCC"?

Swank road over filthy canal
The success of a unique drainage project in New Parnasree in Behala is set to make it the prototype for all such projects in the future.
Kolkata Environment Improvement Project (KEIP), which was executing the drainage upgrade work in the area, has turned the filthy, smelly neighbourhood into a clean and green environment with swank roads and covered drainage channels. The work was completed last month and local residents can’t believe how clean the area looks. How did the metamorphosis take place? The effluent-carrying canal ran for 1,300 feet through Kalimata (borough 14) in New Parnasree before opening into Monikhal. On both sides were houses that had come up over the past 40 years. Residents of the locality had put up bamboo poles to cross the reeking, sludge-filled canal. Most of them suffered from skin diseases and chronic diarrhoea. And almost everyone had had a bout of malaria. When KEIP took up the work, they saw that the road under which they were building the sewerage lines ended at the canal. “The sewerage lines were to be extended to Monikhal but this 1,300 feet canal had come in the way. The pipes couldn’t be placed under the canal. So we decided to build box drains in the middle of the canal. On top, we decided to build roads,” said KEIP project director Susit Kumar Biswas. So the canal disappeared and a swank road came up on top. This did not hamper drainage, as the box drains pass underneath and carry the effluents to Monikhal. The foul smell and diseases have become a thing of the past. KEIP intends to replicate this pilot project in three more areas that have been identified as having similar problems. These areas include Santoshpur-Karbala Road near Maheshtala, the canal behind Nilachal apartments at Kasba and the stretch along Gblock in Baghajatin. Source: TNN |

Flyover updates -
For the elevated road corridor, Work has started on soil testing and initial analysis along EM Bypass and PC connector. More than 1 year after work started on exit ramp, not a single pier has come up. many of the heavy vehicles take the flyover causing severe bottlenecks at 5 point crossing ![]() Flyover along MAR-01 seems to be going too slow for comfort. For some reason, the alignment of the 6 lane flyover looks faulty to me. Ultadanga & Nagerbazar flyovers seem to be chugging along. |

Water-proof coat for city roads
The Calcutta Municipal Corporation (CMC) has taken up a project to lay a mastic asphalt coat on all motorable roads in the city proper before Puja.
According to civic engineers, laying bitumen on the surface is the cheapest way to metal a road. Bituminous roads are good in dry weather. A layer of mastic asphalt prevents water from seeping to the bitumen. Out of the 2,500km of roads in Calcutta, only 200km have received a mastic asphalt top coat in the past eight years. Another 50km of roads is currently being coated with mastic asphalt. The civic authorities have allotted Rs 50 crore for the purpose. cc: The Telegraph Last edited by studdmanster; February 11th, 2010 at 08:34 AM. |

Bridge turns danger zone
A large chunk of the paved road on the 710m-long Vivekananda Setu, or Bally bridge, has worn out near the middle, forcing vehicles to slow down and resulting in snarls during rush hour.
The worn-out portion —across the entire width of the flank used by Calcutta-bound vehicles — is gradually expanding, with the metal framework under the paved road becoming visible. “A small crack had appeared over three months ago. But since no one cared to repair it, the crack is widening,” said Pritha Chatterjee, a Bally resident who frequently uses the bridge. The metal framework under the paved road, which lies under the top bituminous layer and the second layer of concrete, has become visible. Two-wheeler riders are the worst hit. “We move through a small strip on the extreme left. Anyone not aware of the condition of the road will meet with an accident while speeding through the worn-out area,” said a motorcyclist. Regular commuters also complained that the bridge was not well lit. “Using the bridge is even more dangerous at night. The authorities have not erected any board to alert commuters about the road condition,” said Dutta. The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) was entrusted with maintaining Vivekananda Setu two years back. “We are responsible for the upkeep of the road on the bridge but we have not been able to take charge because of some internal problems,” said an official of NHAI in Calcutta. “The public works department did some repairs over the past two years. We have reimbursed the amount,” he added. At present any repair work on the bridge has to be undertaken by the NHAI. “We undertook some repairs on the road when the President came to Calcutta in December,” said Binoy Majumdar, the executive engineer of the PWD’s National Highway I division. cc: The Telegraph |

KMDA to construct 3 flyovers, waterpark
The construction of three flyovers to ease traffic in south and north Kolkata will begin shortly. This decision was taken at the board meeting of the Kolkata Metropolitan Development Authority (KMDA) today. It was presided over by the state minister for urban development, Mr Asok Bhattacharya.
The flyovers will come up at Parama island on Eastern Metropolitan bypass, Vivekananda Road and Dum Dum. The construction will begin by March. The KMDA has taken up a comprehensive traffic-improvement scheme worth Rs 380 crore, funded by the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM). The decision to start the construction of this project immediately has been taken because election to 82 municipalities and the KMC and Bidhannagar Municipality will be held in May. Once the election dates are announced, it will not be possible to start any new project as that violates election norms. The work to shift the district headquarters of South 24-Parganas to Baruipur will be taken up on war footing. The KMDA will spend Rs 500 crore to set up the infrastructure which includes construction and widening of roads, hospital and administrative building. The KMDA has also decided to set up a water park on 17 acres of land on private-public partnership basis. It will come up at Nonadanga. Mr Bhattacharya urged senior officials to ensure that the projects are completed on time, in order to prevent cost escalation. Source: The Statesman |
