Iskandar Malaysia To Locate Pinewood Iskandar Malaysia Studios
December 16, 2009 17:51 PM

KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 16 (Bernama) -- Iskandar Malaysia will be the location of an integrated media production studio facility known as Pinewood Iskandar Malaysia Studios (PIMS) costing RM400 million.

Khazanah Nasional Bhd, via its wholly-owned subsidiary Beserah Ventures Sdn Bhd, and Pinewood Shepperton Plc of the United Kingdom have entered into definitive agreements to develop the facility.

The project will be located on 32 hectares of land in the region, said Khazanah Nasional Bhd's managing director Tan Sri Azman Mokhtar at the launch of the new creative initiative in Iskandar Malaysia here on Wednesday.

The state-of-art facility is expected to open in early 2013, he said.

PIMS, Azman said, is expected to bring significant economic and social benefits to Iskandar Malaysia and also Malaysia as a whole.

"It is projected to contribute about RM1 billion in economic impact in the next eight years, create 3,000 direct jobs and potentially 5,000 indirect jobs a year from the rising number of foreign films and TV shoots," he said.

Pinewood Studios has been known to host some of the silver screen's best moments, including movies such as James Bond, Batman, Lara Croft and Superman as well as feature films, television dramas, commercials, pop promotions, animation and photo shoots.

Situated west of London, it houses film stages, post production theatres, large digital television studios, an underwater filming stage, and location filming as well as a studio village with a wealth of specialist media and production support companies.

PIMS, meanwhile, will offer high-definition equipped TV studios and film stages, post-production suites, office suites, workshops and a backlot, initially targeting productions from Malaysia and Asia Pacific, and over the medium to long term, international productions.

Astro or Measat Broadcast Network Systems Sdn Bhd is an anchor tenant at PIMS while Beserah Ventures will own bulk of the equity in PIMS.

Pinewood's chief executive Ivan Dunleavy, who was also present at the launch, said the company had been in active discussions with Khazanah over the last 15 months.

"The English-speaking and skilled workforce and creative talent have presented us an opportunity to launch our Asian presence," he said.

Pinewood, which is going to be the technical marketing and branding partner for PIMS, is excited about Asia as it is the region enjoying the highest growth in film production globally, Dunleavy said.

"We like to 'blow things up' in Pinewood studio," he said, adding that as technical marketing partner, the company may bring in franchises for blockbusters like James Bond and Mission Impossible to be hosted at PIMS.

Pinewood will provide key operational and marketing input during the construction and operating phases, in addition to the rights to use its global brand.

In a statement provided to the media, Khazanah said in the 10-year period from 1997 to 2007, Asia has achieved a compounded annual growth rate (CAGR) of 14.5 per cent, an average of 191 new productions each year, significantly outperforming the single-digit global industry growth.

It cited the PricewaterhouseCoopers global entertainment and media study as saying that Asia Pacific will continue to lead global growth.

In Malaysia itself, the growth in expenditure on local film and TV content has risen at a CAGR of 8.89 per cent over the last five years, it said.

The creative eco-system in Iskandar Malaysia is one of the nine economic pillars identified in the region's comprehensive development plan.

Pinewood Shepperton to build Malaysian studios
By IB Times

Film and TV studio group Pinewood Shepperton has signed an agreement with Malaysian state investment body Khazanah Nasional Berhad to develop a new studio in Iskandar.

Construction of the Pinewood Iskandar Malaysia Studios is expected to begin towards the end of 2010, with completion by the end of 2012.

The company will receive consultancy and brand licence fees. Fees in 2010 will be largely offset by establishing the sales and marketing infrastructure.

CEO Ivan Dunleavy said development of world-class facilities to service the Asia-Pacific markets represented important progress in the company's strategy to build a new revenue stream, exploiting its expertise and brand internationally.

'Following our deal for Pinewood Toronto and now Pinewood Malaysia, we are exploring further opportunities in this new and growing market.'

Pinewood Shepperton says that trading for 2009 has remained in line with market expectations since its IMS on 22 October.

British Film Studio Behind 007 To Crack Asia
Dan Ashby, Sky News Online

Daniel Craig attends a photocall for
Quantum of Solace in the Pinewood studios

The British studio behind James Bond and Harry Potter is making its first move into Asia by helping develop a film studio in Malaysia.

Pinewood Shepperton has signed an agreement to develop and run a $120m studio in partnership with the Malaysian government.

The deal means that Pinewood will run the technical operations and help with marketing and branding, while the government will put up the cash for building it.

It means the studio can charge the Malaysian government a fee for its services, as well as spreading its brand around the world.

Lobby group Save The British Film Industry has accused the studio of employing a long-term strategy of trying to move British jobs abroad.

The group's spokesman Jonathon Stuart-Brand said: "This is great news for Chinese jobs. This is great news for Malaysian jobs. But it's bad news for British jobs.

"In six months they'll move all operations out of Britain. When it comes it will be like the iceberg hitting the Titanic."

Pinewood rejected the accusation and pointed to Project Pinewood, a drive to bring more production to the UK.

It said that the Malaysian studio was a way of helping other countries gain expertise to make films, while allowing Pinewood to pocket a fee for showing them how.

It added that the whole Malaysian operation would neither be possible nor attractive were it not centred on the company's reputation in the UK.

The famous British company, which includes Pinewood, Shepperton and Teddington studios in the UK, has a long history of helping to produce some of the world's biggest films.

They include Alien, Batman and From Russia With Love - as well as countless others from as far back as the 1930s.

A company spokesman told Sky News that the move was down to the Asian film industry's impressive growth and strong rate of producing new movies.

The new studio will be used to crack into the Chinese and Indian film and TV markets.

Pinewood helped to make Batman

It added that it expected the facility to open in early 2013 and will be called "Pinewood Iskandar Malaysia Studios".

It will be equipped with high-definition TV studios, film stages and post-production suites, or in other words, the gadgets that make films with whopping explosions.

The venture is Pinewood's second foray into the global market: in June it set up Pinewood Toronto in Canada.

EduCity projects target for completion by 2011
By ZAZALI MUSA Published: 2010/09/02

Quote:
CEO views it vital to have institutions operational as scheduled
JOHOR BARU: [email protected] Sdn Bhd (EISB) plans to complete the ongoing education-related projects and facilities at EduCity in Nusajaya, Iskandar Malaysia next year.

Chief executive officer Khairil Anwar Ahmad said it was vital to have them ready by then to ensure the respective institutions would be able to operate at their premises as scheduled.

The projects are the Newcastle University of Medicine (NUMed) and the Netherlands Maritime Institute of Technology (NMIT) campuses, a 12-storey apartment block of students hostel and a sports complex.

The RM300mil NUMed campus on 5.26ha is scheduled for completion next May, followed by the RM30mil MNIT campus on 2.83ha, the apartment block on 3.24ha (phase one) and the sports complex on 11.54ha by the end of 2011.

“At the same time, we’ll continue with our ongoing efforts to attract international educational institutions to set up their branch campuses at EduCity,’’ he told StarBiz.

Khairil Anwar Ahmad with a model of the sports complex in [email protected], Iskandar Malaysia in Johor

Khairil said the company had signed agreements with Singapore-based Raffles Education Corp Ltd (REC) and the Management Development Institute of Singapore (MDIS), Singapore’s oldest non-profit professional institute for lifelong learning to set up faculties there.

The company and REC will jointly develop and build Raffles University on 26ha in EduCity.

He said apart from REC and MDIS, the company had recently signed a memorandum of understanding with an American cinematic art school to set up a creative school at EduCity.

It would be a partnership between the American school and a local private university.

Khairil said the EduCity creative school would focus on cinematography courses such as film production, script writing, editing, stage design, music, special effect makeup, wardrobe and costume design.

“The school will complement the Pinewood Iskandar Malaysia Studio (PIMS) in Nusajaya scheduled to open by early 2013,’’ he said.

Khazanah Nasional Bhd is investing RM400mil to build the region’s biggest independently-owned studio together with renowned international film production company Pinewood Shepperton plc.

Khazanah’s wholly-owned unit Beserah Venture Sdn Bhd will be involved in the project.

Pinewood has over 75 years of filming history and was involved in over 1,500 productions including international blockbusters like the James Bond and Harry Potter series, Batman Begins and The Da Vinci Code.

The NMIT, Khairil said, would start at its temporary campus in Menara Kotaraya here with the first intake of about 150 students of SPM school leavers next March.

He said the institute would start taking students from the region in the second year onwards when it moved to its permanent campus in EduCity by 2012. It has the capacity to enrol up to 2,500 students.

Khairl said NMIT courses are International Maritime Organisation accredited and its graduates could be employed by any international shipping company.

The institute will offer diploma, degree and master programmes in marine transport, shipping seafaring, maritime and logistics management.

NMIT is a collaboration between Maritiem Instituut Willem Barentsz, Maritiem Instituut de Ruyter and Maritime Intel Sdn Bhd (MISB), the operating company of NMIT. Malaysian and Dutch partners jointly own MISB.

“We are now negotiating with a top British engineering university for an engineering faculty and have also started looking at hospitality and business schools,’’ said Khairil.

He said if everything went well, the construction of the engineering faculty would probably start next year.

For the hospitality school, the company was keen to have the Australian vocational schools curriculum.

Khairil said the Australian hospitality school model would be able to produce workforce better suited for Iskandar Malaysia’s leisure and tourism sector.

He said courses offered were related to day-to-day operations such as customer relations, front office management, culinary, banquet, spas personnel, food and beverage staff and outdoor activities.

Khairil said the opening of Legoland Malaysia Theme Park, the Indoor Theme [email protected] Harbour and other leisure attractions in Iskandar would create job opportunities for the hospitality students.

The 123.42ha EduCity is being developed to be the leading knowledge hub in the region catering to the schooling needs of local and foreign students.

“By having foreign universities set up their campuses in EduCity, local universities and industries have much to gain from their presence,’’ he said.

Khairil said it would encourage them to share their expertise by working and collaborating with local public and private universities through joint-research opportunities and academician and student exchange programmes.

ISB is a wholly-owned unit of Iskandar Investment Bhd, which in turn is 60% owned by Khazanah, while the Employees Provident Fund and Kumpulan Prasarana Rakyat Johor each has 20% equity.

Top studio invests in Iskandar
Pinewood Iskandar Malaysia Studios (PIMS)

KUALA LUMPUR, MALAYSIA: The company that helped make movies like Superman and Harry Potter is partnering with Khazanah Nasional Bhd to develop a studio facility in Iskandar Malaysia.

Britain's Pinewood Shepperton, the world's largest studio operator, and the government investment arm, will build a studio facility on a 32.4ha site in Johor.

The first phase of Pinewood Iskandar Malaysia Studios (PIMS) will be spread over 12ha and cost RM400 million to build.

Construction will take three years beginning the end of next year.

Khazanah's managing director Tan Sri Azman Mokhtar said the facility would start operations in 2013 and could lead to "spin-off investments" of RM1 billion over eight years.

Khazanah's wholly-owned subsidiary, Beserah Ventures Sdn Bhd, and Pinewood inked the agreements here yesterday.

Azman said Khazanah would hold a major stake in PIMS, which means it will bear most of the cost, although it had yet to decide how to fund the project.

"We could end up with 100 per cent or close to 100 per cent.

"However, the funding model could bring other potential partners and also a mix of various types of funding."

Pinewood would get consulting and brand licence fees for sales and marketing services as part of its agreement.

The venture is expected to create 3,000 direct jobs and potentially another 5,000 indirect jobs a year from the rising number of foreign films and television shoots.

Furthermore, it could help develop creative industries through film and television production value chain.

At the same event, Astro or Measat Broadcast Network Systems Sdn Bhd, signed a memorandum of understanding to use PIMS, as an anchor tenant.

Pinewood's chief executive Ivan Dunleavy said the company had been in talks with Khazanah over the past 15 months.

"The English-speaking and skilled workforce as well as creative talent have presented us an opportunity to launch our Asian presence," he said.

Pinewood Studios, which is located in west London, has been known to host some of the silver screen's best moments, including movies such as James Bond, Batman, as well as television dramas, commercials, pop promo-tions, animation and photo shoots.

Johor set to house region’s largest film-making complex
By SEAN YAP Friday June 24, 2011
http://thestar.com.my/news/story.asp...&if_height=375

JOHOR BARU: Johor is set to house the largest film complex in the region when Pinewood Studios Iskandar Malaysia (PSIM) opens its doors in 2013.

PSIM chief executive officer Michael Lake said the complex, on a 32.37ha site in Nusajaya, would offer state-of-the-art facilities for film production and related activities.

He said that among the facilities would be production offices, filmset construction areas and backlot (an area behind or adjoining a movie studio, containing permanent exterior sets for outdoor scenes in motion picture or television production).

The complex will have five fully air-conditioned and sound-proofed film stages with floor areas of between 1,400 and 2,800 sq metres, and two high-definition television stages of 1,100 sq metres each.

“It will become a one-stop centre, providing filmmakers with world-class facilities,” Lake said at a talk held in conjunction with the Careers, Businesses and Skills Carnival 2011 at Persada Johor here.

He explained that Malaysia had all the elements to make it attractive to film producers, such as its competitive exchange rate, lower production costs and interesting locations that could be used for filming.

“We hope to attract film production companies not only from Asia, but also Europe and the United States,” he said .

However, Lake pointed out that building the infrastructure alone would not suffice, and that PSIM needed to train talents in various cinematic, organisational and technical skills.

He added that PSIM would look into providing internship opportunities for locals who were interested in the film industry.

Lake said he had already begun marketing PSIM to the film industry overseas, and the reaction has so far been largely positive.

“Malaysia presents a new and exciting frontier, and film producers have been interested in learning more about the country,” he said.

He added that PSIM would work closely with Multimedia Development Corp and the National Film Development Corporation to promote and market the complex both locally and overseas.

PSIM was established with RM400mil in investments in a joint venture between Khazanah Nasional Berhad and UK-based Pinewood Shepperton.

Pinewood Iskandar Malaysia Studios Complex

International engineer appointed to Pinewood Shepperton’s $150m studio project

THE film studio that helped create the Harry Potter and James Bond blockbusters has appointed international design engineers to a US $150million state-of-the-art film and television production facility project in Malaysia.

The 32-hectare Pinewood Iskandar Malaysia Studios complex is being built in Iskandar, a fast-growing economic development region in the south of the country.

Cinema giant Pinewood Shepperton has partnered with Khazanah Nasional Bhd, the investment holding arm of the Malaysian government to appoint Web Structures to the project.

The integrated film and television studio complex is set to be opened by early 2013, creating 3,000 jobs as Pinewood Shepperton grows its global brand.

The Web Structures team is working to create the giant studio buildings, with their 50 metre column-free spans.

Web Structures international expertise is also being sought to ensure the buildings are free of ground vibrations that could affect filming for the big screen or television by causing camera shake.

The original iconic Pinewood studio, west of London, houses film stages, post production theatres, large digital television studios, an underwater filming stage, and location filming as well as a studio village with a wealth of specialist media and production support companies.

Dr Hossein Rezai-Jorabi, Web Structures group director, said: “This is a high-profile project which promises to deliver so much for the economy of Malaysia.

“We are currently involved in detailed design work, meeting the challenges of creating buildings designed to be the best possible for cinema and television filming.

“That means creating large, column free spaces and also ensuring that the buildings are not affected by ground movement, which could cause camera shake.”

The project highlights the versatility of Web Structures’ team of design engineers, who have a growing reputation for their work on some of the biggest and most challenging construction projects in all parts of the world.

The civil, structural and geotechnical engineering consultancy, which has offices in Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, London and Shanghai, is the pioneer of “Fusion Engineering” - using cost efficiencies to redefine engineering excellence through true innovation and design – enabling groundbreaking architecture to become building reality.

Web Structures is a leading engineer for cutting edge buildings in the world’s earthquake zones, such as Indonesia, especially skyscrapers.

It has engineered more than 52 residential and mixed-use skyscrapers around the world in the past 15 years, including the 50-storey high Troika in Kuala Lumpur.

The firm is also currently involved in the creation of a 50-storey development in Victory Valley in Gurgaon for Indian real-estate giant Ireo. It will be the tallest tower in Northern India.

Dr Rezai-Jorabi said: “Our knowledge helps us provide solutions which stretch the boundaries of existing work practices, it is why architects come to us with challenges like those we are now working on in Malaysia.

“Structural engineering offers dynamic and varied solutions to the challenges faced by architects and engineers.

“The design processes we have developed over the years leads to unique structural systems that are tailor-made for each and every project and are totally cost-efficient. That is the approach we are taking with the Pinewood Shepperton project.”

Web Structures works in partnership with leading international architects including Foster and Partners, UN Studio, Kohn Pederson Fox (KPF) and Conran & Partners to create iconic buildings across the world. Its team has also played a role in the Freedom Towers project in New York.

Other current projects also include a new Hilton Hotel in Mongolia; the Headquarters of Tokio Marine in Singapore and the highly-acclaimed Four Seasons resort in the Seychelles.

Pinewood Shepperton plc (the “Company”) announces that, further to its Interim Management Statement of 22 October 2009, trading for 2009 has remained in line with market expectations.

The Company today announces that it has entered into a strategic agreement with Khazanah Nasional Berhad (the investment holding arm of the Government of Malaysia) in connection with the development of a new film and television studio facility in Iskandar, Southern Malaysia (“Studios”).

Khazanah Nasional Berhad anticipates that construction of the Studios will begin towards the end of 2010, with completion expected by the end of 2012. The newly built Studios will be named “Pinewood Iskandar Malaysia Studios”.
