KTMB's commuter service gets a boost

BATU GAJAH: Keretapi Tanah Melayu Berhad(KTMB) commuter service is expected to get a shot in the arm in February when four of the 38 six car sets (SCS) it purchased become operational.

Its president Dr Aminuddin Adnan said this would help overcome problems like delays and lack of coaches faced by the service, which was currently using the three-coach Electric Multiple Unit (EMU) sets.

"We currently have 25 EMU sets but half of them need to be restored. However, we cannot do so because of inadequate sets because the others are constantly in use. This often cause delays," he told reporters at the KTMB Complex here, today.

He said for the same reason (not enough sets), KTMB could also not increase the frequency of the service.

Meanwhile, Land Public Transport Commission (SPAD) chairman Tan Sri Syed Hamid Albar said although KTMB was supposed to introduce the SCS sets this year, but postponed to next year in order not to compromise on safety.

He said this was because each of the train set which could accommodate 1,000 passengers needed to follow specifications, laws and international standards.

KTMB had received nine of the 38 SCS sets and four more were expected to arrive in January while the balance would be delivered in stages until June 2012, he said.

"The frequency of the service will be improved to every 10 minutes with 63 train units - 38 SCS train sets plus 25 EMUs - which will be available by June 2012," he said. -- BERNAMA

That explains it. RapidKL recently upgraded to a new ticketing system that integrates the two LRT lines. The map there is kind of dated. Thanks for sharing though. Pretty soon, it will be difficult to find images of those yester-years.

No bullsh*t? They should have done it years before! But it's better late than never. And how about the cimuter lines and monorail? Still out of the fare system?

Monorail will be integrated by end of this quarter, since they're own by the same company running the metros, but those commuter lines would have to wait till next year, I think.

This is the new RapidKL ticketing system (new TVM and faregates).

All photos were taken by me.

It is currently in use on RapidKL LRT lines (Kelana Jaya line and Ampang line). The new ticketing system will be deployed on monorail line, later this year. These are all made in Spain.

Those are the new TVMs


Different modes of payments on the TVM, you may pay by cash/coin or credit or debit card, and you may also reload your smart card value

Faregates (supports both the normal RFID single journey token, as well as Touch n Go, the de facto smart card in Klang Valley)


KTM Komuter (the electric suburban commuter train) will get new ticketing infrastructure as well. This will have similar technical standard with those of RapidKL's, allowing future integration of RapidKL's and KTM Komuter's ticketing system.

Ticket prices are expected to rise slightly.

Syed Hamid said the decision on the increased fair was in consideration of the refurbishment and maintenance cost of the new trains.

He also said the ticket prices would reflect the improved services, which would include shorter waiting duration from 30-minute intervals to 15 minutes during peak hours.

KTMB president Dr Aminuddin Adnan said the new EMU trains would have additional features such as onboard closed-circuit television cameras, two dedicated female-only coaches, trained captains to assist commuters and three doors on each coach for transitional ease of passengers.

He added that there would also be designated areas for the disabled on each coach of the trains.

Each train could accommodate up to 1,000 passengers on a single trip compared to the 300 on the current trains.

Aminuddin said once the entire fleet of new trains was fully operational, KTMB would overhaul the old trains to improve their conditions for better services in the future.

Significant improvements to the KTM Komuter service are one of the initiatives under the GTP's Urban Public Transport NKRA to improve the quality of public transport in the city in a bid to encourage a higher public transport ridership.
