Mega-Bridge in the Amazon - Rio Negro-Iranduba Bridge
The Manaus- Iranduba Bridge over the Rio Negro branch of the Amazon River, near Manaus, the Amazonian metropolis of 1,2 million inhabitants, linking the large city and the whole Northern/ Northeastern Amazon to the Southern Amazon area and thus the rest of the country. Today cars usually take a four-day ferry-boat ride from Belém, on the mouth of the Amazon River, to reach Manaus from Eastern and Southern Brazil (if you come from Venezuela or the Northern Amazon, there is a good road). The road leading south of Manaus, the BR-319 was swallowed by the jungle in the 90's and "environmentalists" prevent it being rebuilt, though it seems it will be rebuilt anyway shortly, linking this great bridge to the state of Rondonia and the rest of the nation.
Construction started in 2008 and completion is due in 2010 or 2011, if the ever-threatening environmorons don't stop it. Basic data: type: normal/ cable-stayed length: 3,5 km cable stayed section: 400 m height of road (max): 55 m height of central pillar: 187 m ![]() State of Amazonas map: ![]() Close-up from Google Earth, construction clearly visible: ![]() Renders: ![]() ![]() Actual work being done (most pictures as of late 2009) Great video: image hosted on flickr ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

Great Project , i always wondered why there wasn't a bridge there , seemed odd , for Modern Brazil. Is there any plans to build a Railway bridge?

In the Amazon river area, no, there are no railroads there at all. The Amazon river basin is barely scratched by railroads at its outer rims. Manaus and this bridge are well over 1200 km away from the nearest railroad track ![]() There is a plan to bring a railroad from the south to the Manaus area, but beyond 2020 (most likely well beyond)

Impressive amateur video to give an idea of how wide the river is (yes it's a river, not the ocean!)
Technical video on how the bridge is being built (sorry Portuguese only and low res)

I love this project! It's very good to our Amazon!
And, correction: Manaus metro area 2,1 million, not 1,2 mi.

A fantastic bridge, I saw it from Manaus in June this year, and it seems to have progressed.
Unfortunately my images of the bridge were lost .I could only see the bridge being build across the Rio Negro, and the images here only relates to the Rio Negro bridge. But in order to connect the BR-319 it would also have to cross the wider Amazon River itself (i.e. Rio Solimoes). What are the plans to build this part ? |

There are plans I believe but for a more distant future, I am from Sao Paulo and only know of this bridge from the Brazilian Amazonian forumers, please visit the original thread in the Brazilian infrastructure forum: http://www.skyscrapercity.com/showthread.php?t=558724

.Unfortunately, the ambientalist are against the construction of many paths to Manaus because it could bring a great development of the region and increase the devastation of the forest very and rapidly. Its one of the reasons the government in Brazil were too slow to build briges and road in this region...

But this bridge only spans the Rio Negro, right? Then you still need to cross the Amazon river to get to the rest of Brazil.

They have a preliminary project to build such a bridge somewhere 30-40km upstream from Manaus, where the span would be far shorter than if a bridge were to be built from Manaus itself. Thus, drivers could be able to use this bridge shown here, this other Amazon River bridge and a bypass road to access BR-319 (which will connect from 2013 - most likely - Manaus with the rest of Brazil). Until this uncertain future, a ferry crossing will be needed.

Yes, the main reason for this bridge is to connect Manaus to its satellite cities on the other side of the Negro River, and, as the forumer above said, to link the city to the rest of the country once the Amazon itself gets its bridge - within 20 years I hope.

Amazing proyect
![]() Two questions: - how deep is the river in that area? - why the lower part of the structure is made of steel and the rest is made in concrete?. Is there any reason for that?
