United States County Court Houses

There are over 3,000 counties in the United States (in Louisiana called parishes, in Alaska boroughs) and each one has a court house, where the county government offices reside. Many are architectural masterpieces of all styles, many others are undistinguished or downright ugly. The great state of Washington, unfortunately, has more of the latter than the former, but one major exception (there are a few others) is the magnificent Jefferson County Court House in Port Townsend. It was built between 1890 and 1892 and I believe is the second oldest extant court house in Washington. I visited Port Townsend yesterday and here is a picuture of the court house. Please add others!

Thumbs up to the theme of this thread. I ve also visited Port Townsend's country court house, and I agree that it is an architectural gem.

This thread will be really interesting; those buildings like in the photo above are the greatest, very nice buildings indeed...

Pacific County is a small (in population--around 21,000) county on the south Pacific Ocean coastline of Washington. The county seat is South Bend. Of interest in this court house is that the inner dome is done in stained glass. Alas, I was there on a weekend and building was closed.

Allen County's courthouse, in Fort Wayne Indiana. The interior is also stunning:

The Buncombe County Courthouse in Asheville, North Carolina. This is the tallest courthouse in the state, and was erected in the late 1920's.

This is an interesting thread, but unless the photos are by SSC members, this thread shouldn't be in Urban Showcase. I'll move it.

The Washoe County Courthouse, in Reno, Nevada.

Hooray for oddly-spaced Corinthian columns!

The old courthouse is one of my favorite pieces of architecture in this city...the detail is just amazing.

the Hennepin County Courthous located in Minneapolis definately falls under the category of uninteresting and ugly:

Ramsey county's courthouse is a nice art-deco building that also serves as the city hall of St. Paul, Minnesota:

King County Washington Court House

No one has ever praised Seattle for the quality of her government buildings. They have generally been lackluster and downright uninspiring. This may be changing as both our new City Hall and new Central Library are great improvements over the buildings they replaced. But we are stuck with our sad, old and tired King County court house.

The original "grand" entrance is now a messy loading dock. There was talk of recreating this entrance, but nothing has ever come of it.

What about a state like mine (Virginia) that doesn't follow the typical municipal hierarchy? Here, there are both counties and independent cities which are treated as county-equivalents so the physical seat of the government doesn't necessarily rest in a courthouse.
