Dalian, the pearl of northeast China

I lived in Dalian in 2008-2009 and todays banner gave me the impetus to upload some pictures I gathered during those two years.

Dalian is located in northeast China, at the tip of the Liaodong peninsula, about 250 km southwest of the North-Korean border and 450 km east of Beijing. In the inner city, you won't find any 'traditional' Chinese buildings, because prior to the twentieth century Dalian was just a fishermens village. The modern development of Dalian has Russian and Japanese roots dating from the first half of the twentieth century, explaining the presence of many Russian and Japanese style buildings. The city is also home to a large Japanese and Korean minority. Like many Chinese cities, Dalian is now also going through a rapid development, with construction going on everywhere.

Most pictures were taken with a mobile phone camera, so my apologies for the picture quality.

Isn't Tianianmin square in Beijing the world's largest city square?

That's too bad. Better renovate them. And what will be built instead? Those commieblocks?
