Beijing was cloudless and had blue skies during my entire stay there. I was also expecting reduced visibility due to smog but surprisingly it was not the case. Must be the weather...

Shanghai on the other hand is really smoggy. This will be very evident on my upcoming posts.

AROUND THE BEIJING EGG

I walk around this magnificent structure nicknamed "The Egg" or officially called the National Grand Theater of China. The Egg is a large oval that stands on water, or should I say, surrounded by water. It has some 150,000 square meters of floor space with 6,000 seats.

Located adjacent to Tian'an Men Square, this ultra modern structure stands beside the Soviet-era Great Hall of the People.

A thin layer of ice coats the water surface. With spotless blue skies, this is the only photographic evidence that it was winter time.

There is no entrance to the theater at street level thereby projecting an image of a fully enclosed structure with no single opening.

The underground theater entrance is a few meters away from the water edge surrounding "The Egg".

TEMPLE OF HEAVEN

Off limits to the common people during the Ming and Qing dynasties, the Temple of Heaven is situated in a large and pleasant park that now attracts thousands of visitors daily.

Entering through the East Heavenly Gate, I was greeted by loud Chinese dance music. Apparently, a large open space in the park was made into a public dance floor for everyone to dance the day away.

Some stands out.. and they were very camera friendly. The more you focus your camera on them, the more they show off .

The Long Corridor is a 350 meter long building (hence the name) leading towards the Qinian Dian. The Long Corridor is composed of 72 rooms sharing the same back wall.

Within the corridor, people converge throughout the day selling knitted stuff, play checkers and cards, play music, sing and dance.

Walking along the corridor, Qinian Dian takes a peek behind the wall.

Completed during the Ming dynasty, the Temple of Heaven, more correctly known as Tian Tan, is one of the largest temple complexes in China and a paradigm of Chinese architectural balance and symbolism. It was here that the emperor make sacrifices and pray to heaven and his ancestors at the winter solstice. Qinian Dian (Hall of Prayer for Good Harvests) is the centerpiece fo the Temple of Heaven complex.

Originally built in 1420, it is often incorrectly called the Temple of Heaven. There is in fact no single temple building as such in Tian Tan, a more literal translation of which is Altar of Heaven - referring to the whole complex.

Three tiers of marble platform form a circle 90 meters in diameter and 6 meters high.

The balusters on the upper tier are decorated with dragon carvings to signify the imperial nature of the structure.

The golden finial is 38 meters high, and prone to lightning strikes.

Marble carved rampway

Name plaques are often written in the calligraphy of an emperor.

Inside the Qinian Dian is a splendid circular caisson ceiling. At the center are four huge columns, known as Dragon Well pillar, represent the seasons. The other 24 smaller pillars symbolize the months in a year, plus the 12 two-hour time periods in a day.

Do you have photos of modern places in Beijing?

Like new shopping malls for example. See modern side of people activities who live in Beijing.

Sorry but shopping malls were never part of my plans...
I was in the city for only 3 nights so I don't have enough time to go to any shopping mall... nor it even cross my mind.
