@shyaman

I enjoy your great Shanghai photos!
The city looks like a nice mixture of very modern & traditional buildings.

By the way, I have a question. Did you hire an interpreter/tour guide when you traveled in Japan/China?
I guess not many people speak English in both countries. How did you get by? Did you speak Japanese/Chinese yourself?

Except for that half day trip to the Great Wall, I did not have any tour guide. I don't speak Japanese nor Chinese but it's really not that hard to go around these places. Combined with a bit of sign language and occasional showing of a page from the travel guide, you can get the message across.

Japanese people are generally very helpful and polite whenever you need directions or ask some questions. And I think people in Tokyo, Beijing and Shanghai are accustomed to having foreign tourists so interaction with them is not really difficult. And some can at least understand or even speak basic English especially those in their 20s or younger. So I guess you also have to pick the persons you wanted to ask.

A scale model of The Bund greets visitors at the entrance.

At the ground floor lobby is "Shanghai Morning" is an artistic model of landmark structures from various times of Shanghai's developmnt as a city, The structures are integrated into an organic whole, which is very imposing. It serves as a prologue for tourists visiting the place.

The mezzanine level is a hall showing famous historical and cultural development of Shanghai. The displays reflect the 100-year-long drastic changes to the urban development of the city,

THE CONCEPT DESIGNS OF SHANGHAI WORLD EXPO 2010

At the second floor of Shanghai urban Planning Exhibition Center is a collection of concept designs for Shanghai World Expo. These are in the form of lay-out plans and scale models.

In 2001, eight firms provided Expo concept plans for Shanghai's bid for the 2010 World Expo. The plan submitted by Arch Studio, a French company, was selected as the foundation of Shanghai's Expo bid.

Here are concept plans submitted by two other architectural firms.

Perkins Eastman (USA)

ARUP (UK)

After six rounds of voting, the field was narrowed down to the three plans offered by ARUP-Rogers JV, Perkins Eastman Architect and Tongji University. These three design plans were combined into a final plan which formed the foundation for the planning of 2010 Expo Shanghai China.

The planning area of Expo 2010 covers a total land area of 6.68 square kilometers (red line bordered area in the satellite image).

SHANGHAI BY THE RIVER... SCALED DOWN

In another hall at the second floor of Shanghai Urban Planning Center is an expanded scale model of the city. Set on an irregularly shaped table-top, the model focuses on Shanghai's buildings in the immediate vicinity of Huangpu River.

Shanghai's tallest building in the future is already included in the scale model, dwarfing the city's current tallest building, the bottle-opener shaped Shanghai World Financial Center.

The World Expo site is also replicated here.
