ON THE ROAD IN SIEM REAP

Fueled by tourism receipts, Siem Reap's infrastructure has generally improved in the past 5 years.

Many roads are now paved

New apartment blocks have sprouted in the past few years but construction of some of them have been suspended due to the recent financial crisis.

WALKING THE STREETS OF SIEM REAP

Pronounced "See-em Reep", Siem Reap literally means Siam Defeated, celebrating the 17th century Khmer victory over the Thai kingdom of Ayutthaya. The town is the capital of Siem Reap Province, located in northwest Cambodia, and has achieved prominence as the main base for people visiting the temples of Angkor and Roluos.

Siem Reap has managed to retain its calm, rural ambience despite becoming increasingly busy catering to millions of visitors every year. Its relaxed, well-equipped setting provides the ideal place to unwind after a day exploring Angkor.

Siem Reap is a tourist town. With the number of tourists reaching 2 million a year, the preferred currency in Siem Reap is US$. Everything is priced and sold in US$ - restaurant food, taxi, tuktuk fare, even bottled water from a street vendor. There are many foreign exchange kiosks at the town center, but the transaction is different - instead of changing your foreign currency to Cambodian money, the exchange is from foreign or local currency to US$.

A small temple...

... and an even smaller one at a street center island.

Along the river are some prominent establishments. The FCC is a popular venue for tourists. It has a restaurant, accommodation and spa.

Cambodian People's Party headquarters

Walking back to the hotel, I passed by these two specialty shops standing side by side.

DINING IN SIEM REAP

Cambodian food is excellent and Siem Reap has plenty of restaurants for tourists to savor authentic Cambodian cuisine.

My fist meal in Siem Reap is a lunch of amok fish in coconut sauce served in a young coconut shell with rice and coconut juice.

Pub Street is a very popular tourist night spot. The street comes alive at night with its row of restaurants and bars.

There are many dining choices at Pub Street but I opted for Cambodian food at Cambodian Soup restaurant.

I had grilled chicken thigh and fried "morning glory" in oyster sauce, chili, garlic and minced pork with rice.

The "morning glory" vegie suits my palate so I had another one for lunch the next day.

Located at Sivutha Boulevard, Koulen II restaurant offers a very affordable buffet dinner. The restaurant is huge.

At around 8PM, there's a free show of traditional Cambodian dances.
