THE CHILDREN OF TONLE SAP

From the time they were born, the children of the communities along the Tonle Sap tributary river have been nurtured in a waterworld environment. Some of them may stay and continue to populate the river, but some may venture inland and leave the memories of growing in a floating village.

The floating school

The boatman/tour guide asked me if I wanted to donate some notebooks and pencils for the school children. Who could say no seeing the children cramped inside a single classroom floating school. So we dropped by a nearby floating store and bought some notebooks and pencils.

Then we went back to the school and handed out the much needed school items to the delight of the kids.

Angkor's ancient urban sprawl...

PHNOM BAKHENG

The ancient temple complex of Phnom Bakheng sits on a low hill that rises 67m above the surrounding plain.
At the foot of the hill, some scenes already attracts attention.

Some opted to climb up or down the hill on an elephant.

The uphill climb is only a few minutes

Angkor's ancient urban sprawl...

Built by King Yasovarman I (889-910) and honoring the Hindu god, Shiva, the Bakheng complex features one of the region's first temple-mountains - a distinctive style of temple architecture that has become a mainstay of Khmer-style religious buildings.

The foremost reason why most people troop to Phnom Bakheng at sundown is to witness the sunset from the upper levels of the temple.

The steps are so narrow and steep that some find it hard to reach the top.

Looking down...

The side of the temple facing the setting sun gives it a golden glow...

No wonder why some ancient civilizations worshiped the sun.

Angkor's ancient urban sprawl...

ANGKOR THOM: THE SOUTH GATE

Angkor Thom is the biggest temple complex in Angkor hosting several temples inside its walls. Angkor Thom is a fortified city spread over an area of nearly 10 sq.km. At its peak, it had a population of around 1 million. Of the five gateways into the city, the most commonly used and the best preserved is the South Gate.

The gate's approach is via an impressive causeway flanked by 154 stone statues - gods on the left side...

... and demons on the right, each carrying a giant serpent.

They attempted to replace one of the missing heads... not really a good idea.

Surrounding Angkor Thom is a moat

The South Gate itself is a massive 23 meters high structure, surrounded by a triple tower with four gigantic stone faces facing the cardinal directions.

Angkor Thom is fortified by a wall that runs throughout the perimeter of the complex, side by side with the moat.

From the South Gate, a pathway leads to the Bayon Temple and beyond this lie the ruins of many other striking monuments, Although most are in a state of disrepair, these colossal, beautiful sculpted structures, adorned with intricate carvings, still reflect the glory and power of the Khmer Empire.

ANGKOR THOM: BAYON

Located in the heart of Angkor Thom, the Bayon is one of the city's most extraordinary structures, epitomizing the "lost civilization" of Angkor. From a distance, the Bayon appears to be complicated, almost erratically structured temple.

At the entrance are some mythical creatures

On closer inspection, its 54 majestic towers and 216 huge yet enigmatic stone faces sculptures take a more definite shape - their architectural grandeur inspiring the visitor with a sense of awe.

Most faces are smiling...

The Bayon is entered through eight cruciform towers, linked by galleries that were once covered and which are gradually being restored. These galleries have some of the most striking bas-reliefs at Angkor, showcasing everyday scenes as well as images of battles.
