Some Tokyo skyscrapers I chanced upon while on the train or along my walking route.

MOUNT FUJI & KAWAGUCHI-KO

No trip to Tokyo is complete without a side trip to the famous Japan icon, Mount Fuji. There are several viewing spots of the dormant volcano. But word of mouth says that the best place to view the mountain in its full glory is at Kawaguchi-ko. Mount Fuji is surrounded by five lakes, aptly called the Fuji Five Lakes. Kawaguchi-ko is located beside Lake kawaguchi, the most accessible and commercialized amongst the five lakes.

Kawaguchi-ko is about 2 hours by bus from Shinjuku. Along the way, Japanese landscape and small towns are must see sights.

And then, Mount Fuji shows its might.

With an overcast sky, this is the best shot I had of Mount Fuji, while still on the bus. The snow capped summit was hiding. At 3,776 meters, Mount Fuji (or Fuji-san) is Japan’s highest peak with a near perfect cone. It has been dormant since 1707.

For more adrenalin rush, there is the Fujikyu Highland, an amusement park with a number of roller coasters and Mount Fuji in the background to boot.

Kawaguchi-ko at last.

The train and bus terminal

The terminal cafe before exploring the city.

Kawaguchi-ko offers a hop-on/hop-off bus service to different lakeside attractions and viewing points. It’s called the retro bus, obviously due to how it looks like.

Directions, anyone?

Off the retro bus at the end of the route is the Kawaguchi-ko Natural Living Center. Except for the building’s unique design, there’s nothing special inside but some blueberry products and other native wellness food and body care essentials.

The center also boosts a very nice view of Mount Fuji. Unfortunately, at the time of visit the overcast sky worsens. The snow cap’s covered and only the lower half of the mountain is visible.

Kawaguchi-ko Ohashi Bridge

More views along the lakeside sightseeing route..

UKAI MUSIC FOREST

A hidden gem in Kawaguchi-ko is the Ukai Music Forest, a medieval aristocrat’s mansion with rich landscaping over looking Lake Kawaguchi-ko.

The entrance hall is a ball place which reminds people of good ole days. The main feature of the hall is a gorgeous automatic dance organ.

The Music Box Museum

Museum lobby

Old musical instruments on display are aplenty, like this old phonograph

At the concert hall, a string quartet from Prague, Czech Republic regularly performs for the visitors.

On a clear day, Mount Fuji stands as backdrop from this vantage point.

The Museum Shop

The shop’s interior is amazing

Very natural photos of Tokyo without excessive photo-editing.
Your descriptions are also very informative and helpful for people planning on their trips.

Thanks for sharing~!

MT. KACHI KACHI ROPEWAY

The Mt. Kachi Kachi Ropeway at Kawaguchiko Tenjoyama Park is a cable car ride from the lakeside to a few meters below the summit of Mt. Tenjo (1,104m).

There are only two cable car stations, the Kohan station at the bottom end of line and the Fujimidal station at the upper end.

Midway through the ride, the view is already stunning.

Fujimidai station…

The Fujikyu Highland theme park

Further up the mountain is an observation area. Over here, is supposedly an amazing view of Mount Fuji with the city in the foreground. Unfortunately, due to overcast skies, only the lower third of the mountain is visible at time of visit. Bugger!

Even the rabbit was disappointed!

So it instead went for a hike with its raccoon buddy.
