440,000! Goodness, if you add the area of all the malls up that would be at least 5-7 million sq.ft. Not many smaller cities like Kochi are getting so many malls, well not of such large area.

If it is any consolation, 440,000 is the total area. The mall (ie shopping) area is only 120,000.

Honestly, not all the proposed ones are going to be built, and not all built are going to be successful. But the city is growing at an amazing rate, so can't really predict the business.

Right now, there is enough patronage for another Oberon sized mall. We kochiites have a tendency to go to the 'in' places. Look at the patronage of all the various 'mela's come at the JN stadium/Marine drive/Temple ground. People here love going to those place, see other people, do window shopping etc. We have a Reliance Super near my place, but a lot of people go to the one in Oberon just to buy groceries. If you set things up right, the people will come.

Presently, I see an opportunity for a Walmart like store. Huge, everything under a roof, cheap.

Something like a Walmart or a TESCO will surely make merry. Its not the city's population, size or the spending habits that's forcing them to maintain the distance. We have the likes of Vyaapari-Vyavasayi Ekopana Samithi, DYFI and you know who, which really force these 'evil multi-national giants' to recede.

Oh, don't get me started! When reliance came, the panchayath refused license. Then ALL the parties put their flagpoles in front of the building, blocking car parking. They still have them poles there. I care for my car, otherwise I would have faked an accident and razed them down! Who the hell gave them right to erect poles on the sidewalk?

And what takes cake is the minister (Divakaran?) saying that the big retailers will adversely affect the 14000 ration shops in the state.
