It's actually quite cost effective to lengthen the platforms. Shanghai is doing it at the moment with Line 5. I was hoping they would figure out a way to allow the viaduct to support 8 car trains because platform extension is really cheap when your entire line is elevated.

I'm talking about Wuhan Line 1 converting from 4B to 8B. Shanghai Metro Line 5 upgrading to 6C should be good enough it's a suburban metro line. I don't expect demand to be too high.

I learned lots of news from a Chinese metro website ditiezu.com地铁族. There are lots of Chinese metro fans posting news, photos about metro and intercity railways every day.

Wuhan line1

Photoed by @廣鐵薯段_CRH380D

He is a rail fan in Guangzhou , he traveled to Wuhan in Feb.

Wuhan line 1 is an all-elevated metro line . Local people (even the media) usually call it "light rail" but it was not really a light rail line....

Phrase II rolling stock made by Zhuzhou Electric Locomotive Co., Ltd. , all rolling stocka in line 1 are 4-car train .

No screen doors , but Xunlimen Sta. (循礼门) has.

A01 , the first train in Phrase I rolling stock , made by Changchun Railway Vehicles Company Ltd.

The tracks are near the residential buildings . And the dots screen above the platform shows the time the next train will arrive , not the mins left .

You can see the metro line is in the urban area in Wuhan city . The trains are electronic by third rail (the yellow one) .

Driver cab

A33 , the 33rd train of the fleet.

The screen on the head (it was the end in the pic , trains running on right side) displays the destination of the journey .

I think there are some obstacles to lengthening a metro station. Here are a few examples of such obstacles:

1. Bends and curves on the metro line's route
2. Railroad switches (on which a train can go from one track to the other)
3. The elevated tracks going to to a metro line's depot

Any of these being put in really close proximity to a metro station could mean a possible demolition and starting-over for any of Line 1's stations just to have their length for them to serve 6-car or 8-car trains. These obstacles can be a lot worse for an underground metro line.

As of yesterday, local news has reported that 169 roads around the city have been blocked off due to high flood waters, and that numerous stops along Metro lines 2 and 4 have been forced to close as workers desperately try to clear the water from inside the stations.

Thankfully, one of the metro lines in Wuhan is completely above ground.

Is the Tram already in the tracks? I mean, can it be seen testing on the actual route?

A new short-term plan (2017-2025, they call it the fourth phase) is now awaiting for enviromental impact assessment. It includes 14 new lines and extensions totalling 423.5 km of tracks . These are the 14 lines:

1. Line 12, loop line, 60.4 km, 35 stations.
2. 3rd phase of line 11, Hanyang Zhong-fa Shengtai Cheng to 'the end of 2nd phase of Eastern section of line 11' (i.e. the middle section from Huangjinkou to Wuchang railway station), 28.2 km, 11 stations; and a one station extension from Zuoling to Gedian Nan, 3.3 additional km.
3. Line 19, Heping Gongyuan to Guanggu Baoshiqu, 29.8 km, 12 stations (Part of it is to be built on current phase).
4. Line 16, Hannan Dadao to Guobo Zhongxin, 34.3 km, 13 stations (Apparently this was previously line 26).
5. Qianchuan line, Zhifu Lu to Wuhan Qinggong Daxue, 34.3 km, 8 stations.
6. 3rd phase of line 7, Tenglong Dadao to the planned terminal 4 of Tianhe airport, 6.6 km, 2 stations (This means line 7 will have two separate sections that will be joined paralleling Qianchuan line at a later date).
7. 2nd phase of line 6, Jinyinhu Gongyuan to Zhumaling (crossing line 1 at Jinshan Dadao), 15.1 km, 9 stations.
8. 2nd phase of line 21 (a.k.a. Yangluo line), Quanmin Jianshen Zhongxin to Houhu Dadao, 3.2 km, 2 stations.
9. Line 10, Changfu to Shigang, 87.6 km (), 37 stations (Most of the section East of Wuhan station is to be built on current phase).
10. Line 14, Hainan to Dijiao, 27.2 km, 21 stations.
11. 3rd phase of line 8, Yezhihu to Huangjiahu, 3.7 km, 2 stations.
12. Line 13, Gutian Pianqu to Nanhu Dadao, 40.4 km, 27 stations.
13. Jinkou line, Lingwucun to Jinkou Tongyong Qiche Jidi, 20.3 km, 8 stations.
14. Line 20, Wuhan station to Tianhe airport, 30.3 km, 6 stations.

If that is impressive, the long term plans include 25 lines totalling 1100 km and 594 stations (One of the most expansive plans I've ever seen! Beijing may be around 1500 km now, and Shanghai is also near Wuhan's figure).

In the post above I mentioned the third phase of Line 8 running from Yezhi Hu (lake). As we know, the first phase is set to open next year, but it will only run as far as Liyuan. So that means the second phase is the section between Liyuan and Yezhi Hu. This section started construction a few months ago and is set to open in 2019. A bit early IMO, I bet they won't open it until 2021.
