India cements registers healthy growth in Karnataka

Quote:
CHENNAI: Highlighting the "long-term" business cycle of cement industry, he said within south, while Karnataka registered a growth of over 10% in Q1, there was a negative growth of 5% in Andhra Pradesh and Kerala and Tamil Nadu registering a paltry 3% growth.

Despite the sluggish demand in south the company has been able to achieve better volumes. It is also exploring markets in the north and east, which helped in getting better realisation as compared to south.

Record cement production in one kiln

Special Correspondent

Quote:
GULBARGA: The Wadi cement plant of ACC Ltd. in Gulbarga district has the world's largest single kiln that has a capacity of producing 12,500 tonnes a day.

With the completion of the second phase of the expansion of the second unit of the plant in the industrial township of Wadi in Chitapur taluk in Gulbarga district, the production in one of the three kilns had been upgraded to 12,500 tonnes.

Director of the plant, Anoopkumar Saxena, told a group of visiting presspersons from Gulbarga on Wednesday that the ACC had invested Rs. 900 crore for the second phase of the expansion of one of the largest cement plants in Asia.

He said the total capacity of the plant of both the old and new units was five million tonnes a year. While 2 million tonnes of cement was being produced in the old plant, the modern fully automated second unit of the plant produces three million tonnes.

Mr. Saxena said while the new unit had two kilns with a capacity to produce 1,200 tonnes a day, another kiln had a capacity to produce 3,200 tonnes and the fourth with a record 12,500 tonnes a day. In the old unit, the two kilns had a capacity to produce 1,200 tonnes a day and a third unit had a capacity to produce 3,000 tonnes a day.

To a question, Mr. Saxena said the ACC has already approached the Guinness World Records to record the achievement of the Wadi plant of the ACC as the single largest producer of cement in one kiln. To another question, the official said that several safety measures have been taken to ensure zero accidents in the plant. Last year, there were three fatal accidents.

Big plans:Vasavadatta Cement in Sedam taluk of Gulbarga district is one of the many companies seeking to expand existing plants.
Quote:
GULBARGA: Gulbarga district looks set to divest its tag as an industrially backward district with the setting up of at least 12 new industries and the expansion of existing cement plants, at a combined investment of Rs. 15,063 crore.

Official sources told The Hindu here on Sunday that apart from the memorandums of understanding (MoUs) signed during the Global Investors Meet in June this year, a few more industries have applied for licences to set up units in the district. They have also sought infrastructure facilities, including land, for the proposed projects.

Among the existing cement plants that have sought permission to expand their capacities are Zawar Cement Pvt. Ltd. in the industrial township of Shahabad and Rajashree Cement at Malkhed in Sedam taluk of Gulbarga district.

The Zawar plant has sought permission to increase the installed capacity of its Shahabad plant to 6 million tonnes per annum (MPTA) from the existing 0.5 MTPA, and to install a captive power generation plant of 70 MW. The company has also sought to convert the existing wet process technology to dry process technology at a cost of Rs. 3,180 crore.

Sources said the project would provide employment to an additional 4,050 persons, apart from its existing workforce of 570.

Meanwhile, the capacity of the Rajashree Cement plant would be enhanced from 4.2 MTPA to 8.45 MTPA, with a captive power generation plant of 185.5 MW also being installed. The total investment for this would be Rs. 3,000 crore.

While Zawar has sought an additional 472.18 acres for their expansion activities, Rajashree has sought 971.38 acres of land.

Besides, Lafarge India Pvt. Ltd. has decided to establish a cement plant with an initial capacity of 3 MPTA, and a 43-MW coal-based thermal plant to meet its power requirement in Chitapur taluk of Gulbarga district, at a cost of Rs. 1,500 crore. This unit will provide employment to 355 people.

The company has sought 601.12 acres of land for setting up the unit.

India Cements too has decided to establish a cement plant with an initial capacity of 2 MTPA, and a 60-MW thermal power plant at a cost of Rs. 850 crore in Chincholi taluk of the district. The company has been permitted to acquire 1,263.45 acres of land directly from the farmers for the project.

Shree Cements has decided establish a 3-MTPA cement plant at Sedam taluk, with a 35-MW captive power plant at a cost of Rs. 1,000 crore.

Vasavadatta Cement in Sedam taluk has been permitted to take up expansion of its existing plant at a cost of Rs. 800 crore. Orient Cement too have expressed interest in establishing a unit in Chitapur taluk at a cost of Rs. 700 crore.

Besides, several entrepreneurs have proposed to establish other industries.

Dalmia Bharat to invest Rs 2500 crore for 2 cement units

Published on Fri, Dec 03, 2010 at 16:57 | Updated at Fri, Dec 03, 2010 at

Quote:
Dalmia Bharat Enterprises will invest Rs 2500 crore to set up two cement plants of 2.5 million tonnes each in about two-and-a-half years, a top official said on Friday.

The plants will be set up in Karnataka and Meghalaya, Puneet Dalmia, managing director, told reuters by telephone.

Formed following its demerger in September from the listed Dalmia Cement (Bharat) Ltd, Dalmia Bharat Enterprise Ltd will be listed by December 15, Dalmia said.

Dalmia Cement (Bharat) has been renamed Dalmia Bharat Sugar and Industries Ltd since the demerger and houses sugar business, while Dalmia Bharat Enterprise holds cement and power businesses.

"Given that the short term is a little turbulent, I think this industry requires patient capital and with KKR deal and partnership, we have deep pockets and we have patient capital," Dalmia said.

He expects India's fast-paced growth to drive cement consumption in the long term.

Private equity firm KKR had announced in May that it would invest up to 7.5 billion rupees in Dalmia's cement business.

Dalmia said the expansion will be funded through 70% debt and 30% equity and the company has already acquired land and obtained mining leases and environmental clearance for the two plants.

The expansion is part of the company's plan to add 10 million tonnes capacity announced before the global downturn in 2008 that slowed corporate India's expansion as funds became scarce and expensive.

Dalmia said plans for adding another 5 million tonnes will be announced "shortly".

At present, Dalmia Bharat Enterprises operates 9 million tonne cement plants and also owns 45.4% in group company OCL that has a cement capacity of 5.3 million tonnes.

Dalmia said cement prices fell by about Rs 5 a 50-kg bag in November and longer spell of rains this year has kept demand sluggish.

Demand should be better in Jan-March and prices may hold or improve, he said.

Orient Paper to set up a cement plant in Karnataka
Thursday, 10 Feb 2011

Quote:
The board of Orient Paper & Industries cleared the company's proposal to set up INR 1,473 crore three million tonne per annum Greenfield cement manufacturing facility at Gulburga, Karnataka. The board also approved plans to set up a 50 MW power plant entailing an additional investment of INR 247 crore.

Information trickling in suggests OPIL has already obtained the Karnataka government’s approval for the proposed project as well as its go ahead to buy some 1500 acres plus for the same. Sources close to the group indicated that the location of the proposed power plant and its use couldn't be ascertained. The greenfield Karnataka unit will, in all likelihood , be part financed by a mix of internal accruals, debt and equity.

The move to add 3 million tonne per annum cement capacity is in sync with OPIL's aim to become a 12-15 million tonne cement manufacturing firm by 2015-16 .

Ultratech to spend Rs 11,000 cr in 3 yrs on capacity expansion

Quote:
NEW DELHI: The country's largest cement-maker, Ultratech Cement, today said it will spend around Rs 11,000 crore over three years to increase its cement-making capacity by 9.2 million tonnes per annum (mtpa).

"The company has a capital outlay of around Rs 11,000 crore, to be spent over the next three years. These include setting up of additional clinkerisation plants in Chhattisgarh and Karnataka , together with grinding units, bulk packaging terminals and ready-mix concrete plants across the country," the Aditya Birla Group firm said in a statement.

Ultratech said that orders have already been placed for major equipment for setting up the projects.

"These expansions are expected to be operational from early FY'14 and will enhance the company's cement capacity by 9.2 mtpa," it said.

Ultratech Cement has 52-mtpa annual capacity. It has 11 integrated plants, one white cement plant, one clinkerisation plant in the UAE and 15 grinding units. It is also the country's largest exporter of cement clinker.

Meanwhile, due to subdued demand growth for cement, the company's net sales stood at Rs 13,210 crore and profit before interest and tax at Rs 2,063 crore in FY'11.

"FY'11 recorded industry demand growth of 5.3 per cent, the lowest in 10 years. This was primarily on account of the de-growth/subdued growth in various key cement consuming states by lower infrastructure spendings, slowdown in realty sector, an extended monsoon and non-availability of railway wagons," Ultratech said.

Net sales of the company during the final quarter of the last fiscal stood at Rs 4,490 crore and profit before interest and tax at Rs 904 crore.

On the outlook for the industry in the current fiscal, it said, "The cement industry is likely to grow more than 8.5 per cent on the back of government initiatives in rural development, infrastructure and housing."

"The pricing environment may remain challenging and with the impact of surplus capacity, margins continue to remain under pressure," Ultratech added.

Gulbarga set to be cement hub of the State

Quote:
Udayashankar Bhat, Gulbarga, May 29, DHNS:

12 manufacturers propose to set shop in the Hyderabad-Karnataka region

The district in the Hyderabad-Karnataka region is all set to shed its industrially-backward tag. As many as 12 large cement manufacturers are setting up shop in Gulbarga with an investment of Rs 15,000 crore generating 10,000 jobs.

Abundant availability of limestone, an essential raw material for cement, and rail connectivity have played a vital role in transforming the district into a cement hub of Karnataka. Seven per cent of the total limestone deposit in the country is said to be in the Gulbarga district.

Majority of the cement companies which signed memorandum of understanding to establish industries at the last year’s Global Investors’ Meet are now preparing to commence work on their plants. Cement majors - Vasavadatta, Rajashree, Zawar, Chetttinad, Lafarge, India Cements, Shree Cement, JK Cement etc - have obtained licence to build their factories. They have also submitted proposals for development of the necessary infrastructure.

Rajashree and Zawar have planned to increase their production at their Mulkhed and Shahabad plants.

Increase production

According to sources in District Industries Centre (DIC), Zawar has proposed to increase the production to 60 lakh tonnes per annum (tpa) from the present five lakh tpa.

It has also come forward to set up a 80 MW power generating unit for industrial purposes. The Rs 3,180-crore proposal includes technology upgrade, and generates 4,050 jobs.

The district administration has allowed India Cements to acquire 1,263 acres to set up a 20 lakh tpa plant at a cost of Rs 850 crore. Shree Cements will set up a 30 tpa plant investing Rs 1,000 crore in Sedam taluk. The DIC has okayed the proposal of the Vasavadatta Cement to expand its Sedam plant and the Orient Cements unit in Chittapur.

Proposal to expand

Sources said the expansion proposals of the ACC and HMP too are before the government and more players - Sagar, Zuari, Birla, Soorya have evinced interest to establish their units in the district. Karnataka stands seventh in the country in terms of cement production and would catapult to the second position if the projects in the pipeline materialise.

The company plans to invest Rs 280 crore to set up the plant, its fifth in the state. “We have signed the (deal) with the state government and are working out the specific details like capacity, investment and land availability before going to the board for final approval,” P N Iyer, director, sales, south, told Business Standard.

ACC is looking for land in Yellur and Padebettu villages in Udupi district, close to the Udupi Power project, from where it wishes to source fly ash. The Karnataka Industrial Area Development Board (KIADB) has identified 71.19 acres of land in these villages.

Another 94 acres of private land has also been identified and the final notification for acquisition is yet to be issued, state government sources said.
“We have a very good market in coastal Karnataka and the new plant will help us serve the local market effectively,” Iyer said. ACC’s current installed capacity in the country is 30 mtpa. It has 16 cement factories and 40 ready-mix concrete making units. Its Wadi plant in Gulbarga district has the single largest cement kiln in the world, of 13,000 tonnes a day.

Yadgir’s maiden cement plant gets government nod

Quote:
The State government has cleared a proposal for the establishment of a cement factory and a captive power plant by Amrutha Constructions Private Limited near Maralbhavi village in Surpur taluk of Yadgir district.

The unit is estimated to bring in an investment of Rs 960 crore with a production capacity of two million metric tonnes per annum and a 50-MW coal-based captive power plant. It is expected to generate employment to 700 people.

This will be the first big cement factory in Yadgir district when it materialises. All the three major cement factories Rajashree, Vasavadatta and Zuari are located in Gulbarga district.

The new plant is also expected to provide indirect employment to an unspecified number of people apart from opening up ancillaries and other avenues of the economy in the virtually no-industry district, created one-and-a-half year ago. The approval for the cement and power unit was given at a recent meeting of the State High Level Clearance Committee, according to official sources. The new cement factory will require 350 acres of land which will have to be acquired and allotted by Karnataka Industrial Areas Development Board (KIADB) to the company as a Single Unit Complex. The unit is estimated to require 2,100 kilo litres per day (KLPD) of water, out of which 1,210 KLPD will have to be drawn from the Krishna river, subject to the approval of the Water Resources Department.

The company will have to make its own arrangements for the remaining 890 KLPD of water. It is not known whether the company will be allowed to exploit underground sources for this huge requirement. The unit will require 36,750 KVA of power and it has to be supplied by the Gulbarga Electricity Supply Company.

Major conditions

One of the major conditions put forth by the government for the company is that it will have to prepare a plan for development of human resources required for the project, train local people and provide employment to the trained local youth.

The firm has also been asked to provide employment to at least one member of the family of each land loser, if the land is acquired through KIADB. It will have to draw a vendor development plan to develop local vendors and procure the required inputs, components and sub-assemblies from them.

The other conditions are: the project proponents will have to adopt rainwater harvesting, waste water recycling and water conservation techniques, besides zero discharge facility. The promoters will have to obtain Consent for Establishment and Consent for Operations from the Karnataka State Pollution Control Board and environmental clearance from the Union Ministry of Environment and Forests.

The clearance for the new cement unit is said to be the result of the Global Investors Meet held by the government in June last year.

Land concessions for cement units cleared

Quote:
The State Cabinet has cleared land concessions to eight cement factories, all to be located in and around Sedam and Chincholi in Gulbarga district, apart from the concessions for lands sought by six educational institutions and a sugar factory.

The total extent of lands approved for these projects is over 4,000 acres. Most of them have received waiver from the provisions of the Karnataka Land Revenue Act and the Karnataka Land Reforms Act which impose a ban on the use of agricultural land for non-agricultural purposes.

Among the cement units are Chettinad Cements, Shree Cements (Rajasthan), Dalmia cements and India Cements. All these projects were cleared during the Global Investors Meet last year and their land requirements were cleared by the State High Level Clearance Committee.
