The Balloon is still there, and open, but The Howlett has been lost to Sainsburys.

Hi All,
Just looking at the Cumberland Arms extension application which was granted planning permission back in 2010. Does anyone know if the owners are looking to start development any time soon? I thought as we have some well connected contributors to this forum I might as well ask. For those interested. You can find it on the public access part of the NCC site. Reference 2010/0120/01/DET |

Definitely something afoot at Flynns. Exterior de-signed again and painted funereal black. Could be that another of the Bowlt empire of companies is about to be struck off [Flynns and Linekers passim].
The real ale story might be true...

Given the view, location etc I agree, but the management has, to date been appalling and it's catered to the lowest denominator and had so many problems with licencing that it's got a long way to go.

You'll no doubt be aware that this proposal was not only begun during a period of financial optomism (which the incumbents may have enjoyed), but was also closely aligned (in sympathy or in opposition - depending on your Point of View) with proposals to build residential properties on the adjacent land now known as James Place Street (formerly Byker Buildings). That development too appears to have been abandoned, though the land there is still available for development by any one who wishes to do so. |

North Shields pub to re-open under new name
by Sonia Sharma, Evening Chronicle, March 26th 2012 ![]() The Fleet, formerly the Stanley Arms, in Rudyerd Street, North Shields A PUB that was shut down after it became a base for drug dealing is to re-open under new management. The Stanley Arms, in Rudyerd Street, North Shields, lost its licence in July last year after police said the venue had been used by criminals to supply cocaine and cannabis. As part of Operation Geneva, officers carried out months of surveillance and identified members of the gang running the racket across North Tyneside. This led to 24 convictions, with two ringleaders jailed for more than eight years. At a North Tyneside Council sub-committee meeting, detectives explained that undercover officers had been sent into several pubs in the North Shields town centre area and it became apparent that drugs activity was taking place at the Stanley Arms. It was said these premises had been “the back office, the base station, for very serious criminality”, not just for drug supply, but also as a place to buy and sell stolen goods. Police argued the managers had failed to run the pub properly and called for its licence to be revoked, but now the venue is to re-open with a new name – The Fleet – after being granted a fresh licence by the council. The Market Lane (Monkey Bar)
Scissor unit on site to clean up the front brickwork.
Spoke to a guy there and he said they had only been asked to scrape off the paint by hand when it should be done by machine. At least something is finally happening. Still branded as part of Sir John Fitzgeralds? Would like to see the whole of that West Pilgrim Street block finally finished and occupied. ![]() ![]() ![]()

The charmingly named Pussy Galore t#tty bar, pleasantly situated next to the Cathedral is being re-named as Some like it Hot.
Don't object to the bar [been to one and not offended] but thought the name was wholly inappropriate next to a church. Tanners has been given a facelift. Sorry about the sketchy pick

The Waterline has changed [or is changing] it's licence from a ltd company at the pub's address to an individual [one of the sisters who own the place] giving an address at what seems to be a travellers' park in Hetton Le Hole - how very odd...

A few years ago an MP did try and get a law to do that, only to be widely mocked for his concerns. I thought he was dead right, though. Or if not illegal, at least require planning permission. Could also be applied to sports stadiums.
