Red face

when you go out of a country, you EMIGRATE. when you come into a country, you IMMIGRATE. But our airports generally use the term IMMIGRATION for both. So if you saw the "EMIGRATION" sign in the International Departure Section, there is nothing wrong in it. EMIGRATION is the correct word and it is good that it has been put to use.

Many airports use the word immigration to describe both inward & outward because the department that deals with it is the same. And is called Immigration. Whether you leave as a citizen or as a visitor, you get approval by same authority.

Anyways, the Cochin airport is quite nice. I used only once for an international arrival and domestic departure with a 6 hr layover in between thanks to IA delays.

There was a nice clinic there with friendly & inexpensive doctor & medicine when I had to visit.

I love the 'Indian theme' or Kerala theme design with tiles etc. Hope other airports emulate this concept instead of faking the west.

Thanks for nice pictures..

SriLankan Air to fly to Kochi

Mandar Bakre / DNAMonday, February 22, 2010 0:21 IST

SriLankan Airlines, the emerald isle’s flag carrier, plans to increase its flights to India this year.

The carrier will add a flight to Kochi from Colombo, and is evaluating flights to Hyderabad and other destinations in the south, said Mohamed Fazeel, head of worldwide sales. It plans to start eight more flights from India this year. The carrier has ordered two Airbus A320s, which will be delivered this year.

SriLankan currently flies to four Indian cities — Mumbai, Delhi, Chennai and Bangalore. Passenger load factor for flights from India stood at 85% for December and January, Fazeel said, while global load factor was 78%.

The breakeven load factor was 74%. FY10 load factor numbers were unavailable as the airline is readying for the close of its financial year on March 31. The airline reported a loss of 9.3 billion Sri Lankan rupees (approx Rs 375 crore) for FY09, on the back of a 72.85% load factor.

The airline operates an all-Airbus fleet of 12 aircraft — five A340s, four A330s and three A320s. It plans to refurbish its widebody aircraft later this year. Among the planned refurbishment is the introduction of sleeper beds in premium class cabins.

Meanwhile, the airline has asked rating agency SkyTrax to conduct an audit of its services, CEO Manoj Gunawardena said. The agency’s report is expected latest by three months.

SriLankan, whose rating of four stars was reduced to three by SkyTrax last year, has prepared new menus, crew uniforms and in-flight services in a bid to regain the fourth star.

The airline is majority-owned by the Government of Sri Lanka (51.05%). Dubai flag carrier Emirates owns a 43.63% stake, while the balance is held with Sri Lankan’s employees.

The writer was in Colombo at the invitation of SriLankan Airlines

Srilankan also flies daily to Trivandrum and Trichy. It withdrew its flights to cities like Cochin when it experienced an aircraft shortage last year, nice to see that it is re-establishing its network in India, where it had 100 flights a week at one time, including 14 each to Trivandrum and Chennai. Link.

Thumbs up Cochin Airport going to get its First connection with Europe

Condor airlines which has its base in Frankfurt and Munich would be starting its Europe connection from November 4th having connections once in a week every Thursday. Thomas Cook Group has a major stake in Condor Airlines.
The flight has a stop over at Bahrain.

FRA -> COK 23:50 16:10+1 THUR
COK -> FRA 19:25 04:05+1 FRI

Booking for these flights have already started on their website:
http://www11.condor.com/tcf-us/index.jsp and has a discount on their first flight from both the destinations.

I guess there used to chartered connections from Europe on seasonal demands. Not sure about it - can someone confirm about this?

Cochin International Airport, India's first Private airport modelled on PPP basis, is setting new plans to make it bigger

Apart from establishing itself as a prime holiday charter flight destinations, CIAL is now set its foot on establishing multiple projects that can bring in more Non-Aeronautical revenue

* CIAL Aerospace Museum, one of the largest aero museums in the country will be opened in January 2011, offering visitors to see a wide range of historical aircrafts, machines, fighter jets apart from Aero history

* International Exibition and Trade Center will be opened in April 2011, allowing traders and exibhitors to arrange large meetings, exibhitions etc. This is the first step in making Cochin, a preferred destination of MICE

Apart from the two major projects, 2 other projects are also in pipeline for which works will be started soon. CIAL Arts and Science center & CIAL Shopping center with a large food court and Entertainment complex. All these are expected to be part of CIAL Aerotropolis.

Sure, CIAL is poisoned to be India's Tourist Niche airport !!!!!!!!

CIAL to open School of Aircraft Maintenance

In an effort to generate manpower in aircraft maintenance and repair, the Cochin International Airport Limited (CIAL) is all set to commission its Aircraft Maintenance Engineering (AME) School, next month.

A statement issued by the airport company said the Director General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) had accorded the final approval for its AME School and the courses were scheduled to commence on September 1. To start with, there will be two batches comprising 30 students in the three-year-long course in avionics, also encompassing a six-month “on-the-job” training, it said.

The students will be eligible to work as a technician on any type of aircraft on receiving the certification of ‘Basic Aircraft Maintenance Engineering' after clearing the final examinations conducted directly by the DGCA. They can subsequently specialise on a particular type of aircraft and hold the fleet licence for repairs and related maintenance works.

Internship

According to CIAL, it has signed an agreement with Deccan Air Cargo regarding the internship of its students. They will also get training at the upcoming MRO (Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul) project. More significantly, it also announced that the students passing out from the institution will get priority in recruitment in its MRO unit.

The school boasts a library with reference books on aircraft and related documents as per the guidelines of DGCA along with Internet facility. The computer lab and avionics laboratory maintain high standards in equipment, quality and trained faculty.

In order to provide practical training for the students, the institute possesses a Learjet 25 aircraft and two Iskara aircraft, along with five aircraft engines in its hangar.

The school also proposes to launch next year a mechanical course to maintain heavy, light, jet and piston and rotary wing aircraft.

CIAL's MRO nearing all set to open

The proposed MRO (maintenance, repair and overhaul) unit set up by Cochin International Airport Ltd as part of its entry into the domain of aircraft maintenance is nearing completion and the facility is expected to be operational on the airport campus by this year-end.

The 1,35,000-sq ft MRO unit on 32 acres near the CIAL Academy is expected to fill the absence of such a facility in southern India.

The total project cost is estimated at Rs 80 crore, of which about Rs 35 crore has already been spent. The remaining portion is to be financed by the partners or private investors.

The airport company is looking for partners for technical collaboration, long-term business contracts and spares support to operate the MRO with a 49-per cent share of business.

In the first phase, CIAL plans to cater to narrow-body aircraft with facilities for line maintenance run-up bay, workshops, aircraft parking and a taxi-way link.

The second phase will include two wide-body hangars, more parking bays and workshops apart from two additional narrow-body hangars. The component unit will cover the areas of wheels and brakes, electrical and avionics, hydraulics, safety equipment, cabin interiors, engine storage and support, also with scope for further expansion.

Dr C.G. Krishnadas Nair, Managing Director, CIAL, said that the ever-increasing aviation sector would be a plus point to the proposed MRO unit. It is expected that within three years of its operations, MRO unit will get back its capital.

The company had already completed talks with a number of Indian and international airline and MRO companies for joint venture.

According to the conservative forecasts by DGCA, by 2015 the number of aircraft with a seating capacity of 300 or more will increase to 36 and of 200-300 will jump to 120.

Aircraft with 100-200 seats will be up by 350 and 50-100 seater will be 200. This will be a leap forward and the prospect of any MRO unit in India will be attractive, he said.

Air India to be anchor airline for CIAL

Air India plans to use Cochin International Airport as its focus hub and requested CIAL administration to provide additional facilities to make itself as ANCHOR AIRLINE. It was requested by Air India CMD, Shri Aravid Jadhav in a meeting with CIAL Representatives and other travel operators.

An anchor airline means an airline having its operational hub elsewhere, yet using another airport as its major base with bulk parking and repair space along with operational activities.

In the meeting, Air India CMD announced that his airline is deeply interested to explore and use facilities of CIAL to the maximum. He also said that he looks forward in making CIAL as main hub for Air India Express operations to Middle East. Discussions for joint venturing with CIAL for ground handling operations as well as MRO activities are underway. Air India Express plans to use the facilities of MRO in Cochin along with its new facility in Trivandrum.

He said that the airline is planning to start regular direct services to South East Asia destinations like Singapore, Kuala Lumpur etc. The airline is currently studying on economic prospects of direct flights to Europe and US from Cochin. If favourable, it may included in next summer schedule. Plans to introduce seasonal direct flight from Kochi to Chicago is in pipeline considering the strong tourist inflow from US to Kerala as part of tourism, especially medical tourism.

As part of synchronizing European/US Destinations bound passengers from Kochi with from its hub Delhi, Air India plans to introduce 2 direct flights to Delhi T3 from Kochi, one on morning and one in evening. The service will be operational in forthcoming Winter schedule. Passengers can check-in and complete immigration formalities from Cochin itself and change aircraft via transit in Delhi. This facility is open for passengers bound to Paris, Frankfurt, Chicago, New York and London.

More meetings will be carried to chart out other plans.
