I think VS entering the domestic UK market would provide a healthy rivalry between two of Britain's largest airlines, the other being BA. Competing against Ryanair, though, is an entirely different story.

Perhaps its main competitor, aside from BA, would be FlyBE.

So far Virgin's domestic flights within the UK have been a complete flop. Loads averaging 30 people per flight. I give it two years till these "domestic" slots are used for new international flights from LHR.

Virgin Atlantic announce Glasgow expansion with 14,000 more seats

Virgin Atlantic has announced plans to increase its capacity by more than one third on its popular Glasgow to Orlando route.

More than 14,000 additional seats will be available on the route after Virgin Atlantic confirmed it will deploy a Boeing 747 aircraft for the duration of its 2014 programme.

The move means that up to 54,600 passengers will be able to travel direct from Glasgow to the Florida in 2014, compared to 40,420 this year.

The 455 seat Boeing 747 will replace the 314 seat Airbus A330 for 60 return flights between April and October. In previous years the Boeing 747 had only been used during the peak months of June and July when Scottish schools were on holiday.

The Boeing 747 aircraft features the airline’s award winning Upper Class cabin, in addition to Premium Economy and Economy which were both available on the Airbus aircraft.

Edmond Rose, Virgin Atlantic’s director of airline planning, commented: “Since we launched our Glasgow services six years ago we have seen a steady increase in demand and we are delighted to bring our iconic Boeing 747s on to the route for the full summer season.

“Glasgow is an extremely important market for Virgin Atlantic and we are working really closely with the team at Glasgow airport as we continue to grow demand for Virgin Atlantic’s flights from Scotland.”

Amanda McMillan, managing director of Glasgow Airport, added: “Our partnership with Virgin Atlantic has been a huge success story. Since the Florida flights began in 2007 passenger numbers have grown every year, and Virgin Atlantic has continued adding extra capacity to accommodate the increasing number of passengers travelling to Florida.

“News that Virgin Atlantic is increasing capacity for 2014 by more than a third is a fantastic boost for Glasgow Airport and Scotland. The Boeing 747 is an iconic aircraft and we are delighted it will carry thousands more passengers direct to Florida next year.”

Virgin Atlantic flights from Glasgow to Orlando can be booked online now at virginatlantic.com.

Virgin Atlantic cancels Little Red domestic flight service

Quote:

Virgin Atlantic has said it will stop running Little Red, its UK flight network launched in 2013, next year.

The flights between London Heathrow and Manchester will stop in March, while those between Heathrow and Edinburgh and Aberdeen will end in September.

The service was designed to challenge British Airways.

The aim was to help long-haul Virgin customers connect with other parts of the UK, but Virgin said most passengers were using it as a stand alone service.

At its launch, the company pledged the airline would deliver "Virgin Atlantic's rock-and-roll spirit as well as real value for money".

Not enough
Virgin said that bookings "grew steadily" in the early part of this year, but few of these were passengers connecting with long-haul Virgin flights.

"Little Red has unfortunately not been able to make a positive contribution to Virgin Atlantic's network," the company said.

It added that a scarcity of available slots and the speed with which the new service was launched had hampered its success.

Sir Richard Branson, Virgin Atlantic's president, said: "When the competition authorities allowed British Airways to take over British Midland and all of its slots, we feared there was little we could do to challenge BA's huge domestic and European network built through decades of dominance.

"To remedy this, we were offered a meagre package of slots with a number of constraints on how to use them and we decided to lease a few planes on a short-term basis to give it our best shot.

"The odds were stacked against us and sadly we just couldn't attract enough corporate business on these routes."

The Virgin Atlantic 787-9 will be launched on the London Heathrow - Boston route on 28th October 2014, so I'd assume that the 1st delivery to the airline will be sometime in the next 2 weeks.

Bump...

Revised this thread to become the Virgin Group thread so that it can include both Virgin America (VX) and Virgin Atlantic (VS) in one.
