There is tons of cities with such buildings across europe... there is still lot of buildings of this type in bucharest (and some french architecture schools work with romanian ones to restore some old areas)...
i always believe that a city must be in perpetual change, i don't say here to raze old cities to built new ones over them (this is terrorist change), but simply that, a city that suffered from fire, hurricane, earthquake or war must go ahead and reinvent a new future, buildings that are built today are the "old" buildings of the future ! it's the same for bucharest, the city suffered from a communist architecture terrorist, but it's to romanians to reinvent the future look of the city, if this building needs to be destroyed, would be far greater to do something futurist, but like said someone, it would cost a lot, and i think we can do something with such building. Kampfy : i find really cute that we rebuilt old cities, dresden looks fabulous, if it's really inside the mood of local inhabitants, why not do it, but you can't say that modern buildings of berlin are bad, post war buildings that we find in ruhr cities are, but i think here they did built it without much inspiration. |

For that we have the Atheneum:
![]() ![]() Luckily it escaped Ceausescu's dementia. ![]() I think, as Derbedeu put it, time cannot be turned back, so we should make the most of it. They are going to put it for public debates, probably ask for international contest for proposals and hopefully turn into something both commercially enticing and culturally useful. This in the coming 3-4 years, so there's plenty of time to think it over.

This is actually a topic relevant to urbanism, why should we leave it in the garbage bin with the off-topic threads?

Sell it to the Chinese for them to use as an embassy.
Or, propose Bucharest becomes the new EU capital

Watch Top Gear S14E01 (and don't mind the ignorant jokes, that's part of the show). They had a race in tunnels beneath the building! That's how long they are!

Plenty of space, no construction costs, and a great possibility for the
