PROJECT | Regjeringsbygg 6 (R6) | 45m | 12fl | Completed
Regjeringsbygg 6 (R6)
The government block is getting a new addition with 440 office workspaces, it allows the ministry of environment to move to the same location as most other ministries. Total size of project is 21.500 squaremeters - will cost 900 million NOK, and completion is stipulated for the beginning of 2012. Developper is Statsbygg and main architects is BA Arkitekter. The building is allowed upto this height due to it's nabours and also to allow to fit in a square. It's withinn the Ring1 highrise zone that normally allows buildings upto 42 meters. Surrounding buildings and the public space The R6 site is located between the high-rise office development of the 1990s and the 3 and 4-storey residential buildings from the late 19th century. The three buildings of the R6 project are 8 floors tall, and differ from the adjoining residential buildings in origin, use, architectural style and height. The buildings will border along the newer buildings from the 1990s on Munchs gate and Teatergata. The open space between Munchs gate and Teatergata represents a break with the old neighborhood structure, but is perceived today as a breathing space in the new high-rise cluster of buildings. Design and architectonic considerations The three buildings in the new government building complex R6 have diverse origins and identity, but will be linked together to form a functional unity, with a common identity, as one government building. The grouping of the three building masses poses particular challenges since the individual character of the buildings, and the antiquated elements associated with the old building, must be maintained within the framework of an overall architectonic whole. The planned new building in Teatergata 9, with twelve stories, will be the gateway into the new building complex. The main façade facing the square will be designed as a simple rectangular surface comprised of grids with dimensions based the building’s main module, and with references to the neighboring building in Munchs gate at the height of its cornices. The façade displays an active ownership to the square, which is the main gateway into the new government building. Statens Enkepensjonskasse (Keysers gate 8) was originally built as an office building in three stories with a stone facade in a Neo-renaissance style and with a load-bearing steel frame and concrete floors. The building was extended with three new stories in 1956, and new facades designed to fit the design of the original building. The building has been declared a protected building by the Norwegian Directorate of Cultural Heritage. The 8 storey office building Keysers gate 6 was completed in 2001. The building has never been occupied. The new building will contain the main reception area and the vertical infrastructure serving the three buildings. The main entrance and reception will occupy a two-storey space in the new building facing the square. The canteen and conference room are located on the building’s main floor (level 2) in two glass-covered atriums. The building’s 13th floor offers simple self-catering, and a roof terrace as an alternative to the main canteen area. Three underground levels contain areas for technical installations and an underground passage leading to the other buildings in the government building complex. The Square in front of R6 The public space in front of the building’s main façade, including the street, is enclosed by adjoining 10-12 storey buildings. The square is formed with a fall from the street level towards the building’s main entrance. The square will be paved in granite. A grating will be integrated with the granite paving alongside Munchs gate for the waste air from the building’s ventilation system. A low volume containing ventilation gratings from technical installations below, defines the extent of the square in front of the adjoining building, Teatergt. 5. The square will be open and accessible to the public, but functional requirements and security are important criteria for the landscape design. The square will have limited motor vehicle access and will be designed for unlimited public accessibility. It will have a high standard of design and materials that reflect the architectonic qualities of the building and the building function as a government institution. The signposting will be of the same design as the remainder of the government building complex. Sidewalk areas will be in keeping with the standard of the government building complex, using stone slate and cobblestones. The square, and the sidewalk around it, will be enclosed by retractable bollards for limited vehicle access and emergencies. The square will be illuminated day and night LINKS | Statsbygg.no/R6 ![]() Illustration by BA Arkitekter AS ![]() Updated by Þróndeimr

I noticed this building's crane over the roof tops while walking up Universitetsgata today. Since it's so close to my school, I guess I can try to make some photo updates once in a while.

^ Me too, going to school right next to it - made the tread so it's easier to see the evolution of the construction later on without looking trough endless other treads
![]() Just to show the density of the area for non-Oslo knowers, the crane can barely be spottet behind the Highrise at St.Olavs square here: ![]() Spotted again, behind the same highrise:

Nice, except the tower! It will hopefully look far better than the rendering.

I don't know... Too simple and boxy for my taste, and not enough height aubviously. The thin sides looks to be made of stone, so it will atleast be a little varied, i'm afraid they it will have a bleak concrete facade at the back tough, like Borgarting... Hopefully i'm wrong - the panorama elevator may mean that this side will also have a decent cladding....
![]() Might aswell show the art-proposals in this tread aswell: If they decide to do this one with all the colours, than the building will be more of my liking: ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() I don't know who is the winnner, i tought the competition would be done by now? Anyone who knows anything about it?

well, it is a ugly box that would never have been approved unless it was 'important'. Anyway, the latest redesign is a big improvement, might look good at last, though its design will look horrible 15 years later.

well, its definitely not a beauty and its not a really interesting building..
but being a glass box there are limits for how ugly it can be. the building behind it looks very beautiful, though - almost like a miniversion of the castle in stockholm. i wonder why ive never seen that building before.. |

I wouldn't say the building is ugly, just a bit boring. I'll try to take some photos of the construction later today.
