I don't think the exact location of a HSR station in very large cities like Kunming matters that much because the vast majority of passengers will need to take metro to their final destination regardless of station location. What does matter is easy and fast access to metro and/or suburban rail and good connections to all the major neighbourhoods using the aforementioned city public transport. The only concern then is that putting the station really far away results in a very long metro journeys to places people want to go to thus somewhat reducing usefulness of HSR somewhat (for medium length journeys).

Now that was fast, they only took a couple years to build that branch .

Next up is the opening of line 3, sometime in 2017. And the reopening of line 6.

So it appears line 3 is opening ahead of schedule, as it may do so during this month (latest rumors is August 30). This is the main East-West throughfare of the city, and will connect to line 6 (currently shut down) towards the airport at its eastern end.

And will Line 6 reopen when Line 3 opens, and if so, will it continue to run non-stop between East Bus Station and the airport, or will the intermediate stations open?

if this rumour is true they better haul ass because parts of the station above ground around the entrances/exits haven't been completed and work on the interiors of the stations is on going judging by the construction materials being delivered on site.

The sooner the better in my opinion but I would say the opening would be closer to the National Day Vacation. Happy to be proved wrong though.

Yup, line 3. It is a bit longer at its Western end than I expected, with three extra stations. In addition line 6 has been brought back into operation (this time with the two intermediate stations), it had been out of service since March 2016. Kunming Metro is now 89 km long with four lines that look more like two: lines 1 and 2 are one (they have through service), and lines 3 and 6 the other. However this won't last long, as lines 1 and 2 are being extended from its common "terminus", and line 6 is doing so towards the city center.

Fun fact: Now there is a complete set of Bus Station metro stations (x-bu Qiche Zhan), as there are Beibu (北 bei = North), Nanbu (南 nan = South), Dongbu (东 dong = East) and Xibu (西 xi = West).

It would be nice if East Coach Station had a cross-platform transfer between lines 3 and 6, but that does not appear to be the case.
