Addis Ababa, December 1, 2010 (Addis Ababa) - Ethiopian Airlines said it has received four of the ten DA40NG pilot training aircrafts, which are part of the ten DA40NG training aircrafts purchased at a total cost of EUR3.7 million in July 2010 from Diamond Aircraft Industries, Austrian Aircraft manufacturer.
Ethiopian said the remaining aircrafts will be delivered successively in the coming months until June 2011.

It said DA40NG, glass cockpit and single engine training aircraft, is powered by AE300 engine which is designed to perform well in high altitude. It also uses Jet A1 fuel instead of Avgas that that has a better economic advantage.

These brand new aircraft will enhance the on-going pilot training at Ethiopian Aviation Academy to the highest international level for Ethiopian and other African Airlines cadet flight crews, it said.

Ethiopian Airlines Aviation Academy has become a powerful source of the African aviation training. The Academy is committed to developing and providing a competent workforce for Ethiopian Airlines in particular and the aviation industry for the region in general.

Chief Executive Officer of Ethiopian, Girma Waqe on the occasion said the aircrafts will significantly contribute to curb shortage of pilot training aircrafts.

Academy Head, Captain Lemma Tekalign on his part said the aircrafts arrived at a time when Ethiopian is striving to achieve its vision to create a number of pilots. - ENA

Ethiopian Signs Code Share Deal with Air China

Quote:
Ethiopian Airlines is pleased to announce that it has entered into a code share agreement with Air China. The code share agreement strengthens Ethiopian’s partnership with one of the global airlines in China, allowing passengers of both carriers to have wider choices of services between Asia and Africa. Currently, Air China operates 925 daily departures to 156 scheduled destinations throughout the world.

Under this agreement, the two carriers jointly provide fourteen weekly flights on the Addis Ababa Guangzhou and Addis Ababa Beijing routes. The new code share will also strengthen Ethiopian’s flight network between Addis Ababa and Asian countries. Likewise, the agreement will provide Asian customers seamless connection via Addis Ababa to vast Ethiopian network in Africa.

Air China, the member of Star Alliance, is the world’s largest carrier by market capitalization with a capacity of flights each week worldwide.

Ethiopian Airlines, one of the largest airlines in Africa, continues to enhance its network by means of code share agreements with several regional and international carriers in Europe, Middle East, Asia, and Africa.

Ethiopian Airlines receives another Boeing 777-200 LR aircraft

Quote:
Ethiopian Airlines said on Sunday that it has received the second delivery of a Boeing 777- 200LR, making it the first African airliner to possess and operate the ultra-long-range aircraft.

The aircraft arrived at Bole International Airport on Saturday, an Ethiopian official told Xinhua in a statement.

The newly arrived aircraft transported also anesthesia equipment valued at more than 500,000 U. S.dollars to Black Lion Hospital in Addis Ababa free of charge. The equipment was transported by the Ethiopian airlines in partnership with Boeing Company and Seattle Anesthesia Outreach.

The delivery is the part of Ethiopia's five orders to Boeing Company at the cost of 1.3 billion dollars.

Ethiopian CEO Girma Wake said "since its inception, Ethiopian airline has been engaged in various corporate social responsibility activities which support community initiative and development efforts."

"We see our planes as not only a resource for our airline but also a resource of vital service for the people of Ethiopia, and when we can use that resource in a manner such as this, it truly reaffirms our commitment to undertake social responsibilities whenever and wherever we can."

Boeing Global Corporate Citizenship for Northwest Region Director Liz Warman said, " Boeing and its airline partners have been working to fill what is sometimes empty cargo space to help bring relief to people around the globe."

Most of the medical supplies being shipped to Ethiopia were donated by Swedish Medical Center which is the largest and most comprehensive non-profit health provider in the Great Seattle area.

Pretty remote I think, at least in the near future. They're talking of starting new routes to Toronto and Atlanta soon though.

Emirates plane slices Ethiopian tail on take-off

January 5, 2011

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

ADDIS ABABA - An Emirates passenger airliner landed safely after it smashed the tail of a parked Ethiopian plane during take-off at Bole Airport, a newspaper reported on Tuesday.

The Reporter said an Emirates Airbus A340 bound for Uganda hit the tail of a parked Ethiopian Boeing 777 which had arrived from the U.S.

The report didn't disclose how many passengers were onboard the Emirates plane, nor if there was any injury.

The Emirates plane whose wing had caught fire upon collision flew back to its destination after undergoing repair same day.

Airlines officials couldn't comment whether The Ethiopian Airlines Boeing 777, which sustained substantial damage, would be repaired at home in Addis or at Boeing plants in the US...........This is really unfair - why the new plane..

Ethiopian bought five Boeing 777-200 LR for USD 500 million last November.

Ethiopian Airlines already has a sizable Boeing fleet, with 737's, 757's, and 767's. It has standing orders for 787 Dreamliners and more 737's, in addition to the big continent-connecting 777's. Their fleet is one of the world's youngest.

I wonder what the problem was....that airport is quite busy during certain hours, specially for its size. I wouldn't be surprised if it's related to that. That expansion seems overdue.

I doubt this will have any effect on Ethiopian's expansion. I'm sure this plane will be back in action in no time.

An airline dispute has grounded hundreds of Ethiopians claiming Jewish descent from immigrating to Israel, an official said on Wednesday.

Israel had flown 100 of the Ethiopian claimants, known as Falash Mura, to Tel Aviv each month on Ethiopian Airlines in recent years but none has come since December, said Michael Jankelowitz, a spokesman for the Jewish Agency, the quasi-governmental agency that handles Jewish immigration.

Since then the Ethiopian national carrier has refused to fly the Falash Mura, citing lack of cabin space, due to Israel's refusal to allow an increase in the number of weekly flights from three to five, said Jankelowitz....Good job ET! Tell them like that, this is not another corrupt African Airlines - there is an internationally accepted rule of flying frequency.

Israel has been demanding that an Israeli airline also be allowed to fly the route, but Ethiopia has so far refused......We may not out smart the Jewish business attitude, but...come on, we are not that much fool - there is a rule of law!...

The issue came to a head on Wednesday when Ethiopian authorities refused to allow a foreign-owned aircraft chartered by the agency to land in Addis Ababa to pick up 170 emigrants, said Jankelowitz........ Sheer Arogance! Unbelievable, even Wuyeyet Taxi in Addis have some sort of business conduct....

A second plane chartered for Thursday was also cancelled, he said.

"They are all now stranded in Addis Ababa outside the Jewish Agency compound," he said.

Israel began bringing Ethiopia's Jewish community to Israel in 1984 under the Law of Return, which guarantees citizenship to all Jews. That operation was largely completed by 1991.

The Falash Mura are not considered to be Jewish under the faith's strict rules and therefore are not eligible under the law. Nevertheless, successive Israeli governments have authorised bringing some 11,000 of them to Israel.

The Falash Mura are the descendants of Ethiopian Jews who converted to Christianity, many of them under duress, in the 18th and 19th centuries. Many have relatives among the Ethiopian Jewish community in Israel.

Jankelowitz said the agency was now negotiating to charter an aircraft from Ethiopian Airlines.
BTW: We are very thankful for the people of Israel for accommodating & helping out such a vast number of poverty stricken Ethiopians.

Nice article I found, talks about the airline business world wide but here is the Africa portion:

Airlines: surviving in a changing world

Quote:
The standouts in 2011 will possess a sound – and flexible – strategy. Many will introduce one or more of the following ingredients:

- rapid fleet and network development;
- a new business model;
- innovative products and services;
- consolidation or cross-border JV activity;
- financial outperformance (or financial distress)

Quote:
AFRICA

Air Arabia Egypt - Egypt is an ideal market for Air Arabia, due to a lack of surface transportation and significant two-way business and leisure travel and lack of LCC competition.

Air Arabia Maroc - With its fleet of A320 aircraft, the airline is expanding its network into Europe to take advantage of Morocco's vertical open skies agreement with the EU.

Arik Air - Arik Air is seeking to establish a stronger network, with the clear intention of becoming a serious African force.

Ethiopian Airlines - The carrier is planning considerable long-haul expansion having around 45 aircraft on order – for the largest fleet order in the region - coinciding with the rise of the Addis Ababa hub.

Kenya Airways - The airline’s CEO Titus Naikuni in Oct-2010 commented that the carrier is benefiting as a “number of countries continue to open up their skies, which is tied to the deepening democracy and free market [policies]”.

1time - 1Time CEO Rodney James is calling for authorities to allow South African LCCs to operate more routes into the rest of Africa, adding that it could significantly boost traffic if they were permitted to grow their capacity.
