Wrocław - The phoenix is rising from the ashes

As You propably know from other topics about Wrocław, which were established by my colleagues, that we call it "the city of differences". During the II World War city was destoyed in almost 70% and it was really hard for our ancestors to rebuild this fallen phoenix. But in my opinion they did great job to restore the memory of a beautiful place, which Wrocław was long time ago.
It will be a pleasure for me to show You all how this city is still fighting for the right of being called "the flower of central Europa" once again. So, I invite You warmly to join me in this journey, where we will be sightseeing not only the most common monuments and famous landscapes of this city, but also mysterious places which scare most of Wrocław citizens.

I will try to explain and give some details about each object You are going to see. So don't worry if You spot some Polish language.

The show shall begin

1) My first picture is different from other users who start their topics. I would like to introduce You the brightest, modern star of our local architecture. It's the New Renoma. It's the expansion of the old Wertheim warehouse, which luckily survived the war. I must say, that Wrocław waited very long for such a building !

2) Another view on New Renoma.

3) On this picture we can see exactly how two parts are connected into one organism. The old part was also completely renovated 2 years ago.

4) Old Renoma has also gained very bright ilummination.

5) We are still in the local neighbourhood of Renoma. It's the Świdnicka street which leads us directly from the City Markt to Renoma in the south direction. This area lasted luckily from the massive attacks of Russian army during the war but about 500 m ahead from this place, before the 1945 were kilometres of tenement houses, which were completely destroyed and now the local government thinks what to do with this area. I will show it in couple days.
But returning to this photo - on the right there is our local opera and on the left showy tenement house on the Teatralny Square.

6) Direct look on the building of opera. You can also see a small sculpture of birds made by our local modern artist Abakanowicz. In my opinion they don't represent anything worthy.

I will upload next photos in the evening. Have a nice day

Thanks for the warmly welcome !

I can assure that this thread won't dissapoint You, because my goal is to show how a rather anonymous place in the world can suprise and amuse every person, who thought that it isn't here nothing worth seeing. We have here in Poland some mysterious places, which hide their real value and only after deep discovering, it appears that it is something stunning.
So, this is my mission - to encourage everyone to read, watch something about Wrocław or maybe just visit this place someday. I will do my best

7) View on the Teatralny Square. It's very close to city market and propably if You ever had visited Prague, you would find some similarities

8) Maybe not the phantom but guardian of the opera

9) So called "Puppet Theater" which fulfils now only cultural function but initally, a merchant house was located in this building. As You can see, the primary function isn't lasting forever And on the pavement outside of the theater You can see "The dwarf fountain" - the dwarfes are now one of the symbols of Wrocław. If You are patient, You can count all the small creatures living in this city. But I warn You, there are at least 100 dwarfes here. So it's a hard job

10) Iluminated wall of the Pupper Theater

11) The church of "Holy Body" which is also located nearby the Świdnicka street and the Teatralny Square. When I looked at this photo for the first time, I felt fairly shocked by the power oozing from the church. It was something really emotional, even if the church isn't such a great piece of architecture.

12) And as I mentioned before, dwarfes are everywhere. This one sends You greetings - it's our small "vagabond"

Next upload in a few hours after I wake up

Thanks !

For Your knowledge - i've got not only the photos showing Wrocław at night, but I think they are less common then typical views from for example : city market in the bright sun. But I can assure You, there will be two kinds of photos around here but be patient Ok, let's continue our journey through Wrocław.

13) The Lower Silesian county office - it is probably the last monumental building established in Breslau by Germans before the ending of the war and changing the affiliation of this city.

14) Closer look on the same building. It's typical "nazi" architecture - low amount of details but on the other hand monumental

15) The old stock market which is located near the city center, on the nearby Solny Square. Why old ? Because we have in Wrocław two buildings which fulfilled the function of stock market. But this situation occured during the german possesion of the city and now in this building there are offices of local companies. The building was completely renovated about ten years ago or a little bit more - I don't remember the exact date

16) Narrow passage

17) The Cathedral on the Ostrów Tumski. This is the area where the history of Wrocław started over 1000 years ago. Wrocław in his very long and complicated past belonged to Poles, Czech, Austrian and Germans. So the mixture of this cultures is still filling this city like a cup.
Unfortunately we lost very much during the Second World War and the communistic regime but our local government tries to repair the damages. But it's very hard because some districts don't exist anymore like the southern part of the city, where were the strongest fights between Germans and Russians and the beuatiful tenament houses from the end od XIX century were completely destroyed. To look how there was before visit www.wroclaw.hydral.com.pl and write into the search mode "Powstańców Śląskich" - you will see what i'm writing about.

18) Welcome on the Ostrów Tumski. There is a new urban legend connected with this green bridge. When couples get married they get a padlock and hang it on this bridge. It should bring them luck. Nice story, I must say

19) We are still on the Ostrów Tumski. On this photo are two very important monuments :
- the Saint Cross church which is unusual because it is horizontally divided into 2 levels, where in the same time the masses take place
- the sculpture of saint Jan Nepomucen - it is a common sight in Czech Republic and here in the Lower Silesia because of a common history which connects these two regions.

20) The typical postcard view on Ostrów Tumski and the Piasek Island on the left. The picture was taken from Pokoju bridge.

21) Look high in the sky but first You should notice the iluminated building of National Museum in Wrocław. It is one of the most astonishing mansions in this city. Before the war, this neorenaissance building was headquaters of the silesian province government. Also the ivy which grows on the walls is very special and ensures that in autumn when the leaves get red color the view is almost outstanding. But now it's winter, so i must dissapoint You

22) Once again the museum

23) Quite specific view on the right riverside of Odra. It was almost completely destroyed during the war and the socialistic builders the chance to prepare something special. And I must that this Manhattan, as it is popularly known, is one of the best structures, which were established after the war. In Wrocław, You can often meet typical apartment block - the symbol of communism - but this architecture which You can see on the photo is really worthy. We can also notice the Grunwaldzki bridge and the buildings of university.

24) Another monument worth visiting during the trip to Wrocław is Panorama Racławicka. The form of the elevation is really good and inside it You can admire the big picture showing the battle under Racławice, which is a very important date in the history of Poland. Initally the picture of Wojciech Kossak and Jan Styka was located in Lviw but after the war, when Poland lost the power over this city, the picture was transfered to Wrocław.

25) The sculpture of the victims of Katyń. It's located near National Museum and Panorama Racławicka. In the background we can see the outline of the Main Post building.

26) The view from Ostrów Tumski on the Piasek Island with the main monument The Holy Marie church. Almost all temples in Wrocław lost during the war their inside decoration and there are only a few of them, which have original decor. That hurts me the most.

27) General view on Piasek Island but from the left riverside of Odra. Before the war, on the first plan there were a lot of small tanement houses but now as You can see there is no sign left from them.

28) My first picture which was taken about 2 pm so admire Wrocław in daylight once again the view on Ostrów Tumski

29) The building of Ossolineum, which is located on Grodzka street. This alley abounds in monuments.

30) Once again the Ossolineum but from inside garden.
