Hey, since I like both old and new architecture, I´m also very intrested in the kind of urban renewals that was very common back in the days of the super economic boom of the 1950-60´s in Sweden, but also common in the entire western world of course. But I actually think Sweden is a top example of it, especially since nothing here was damaged at all in WW2...

Therefore I´ll probably post quite a bit in this cool thread!

Starting of with a real gruesome example from my hometown Gävle.

Before.

After - it´s an extension to the nice hotel visible to the left in both pics.

What you guys think of it?
Me myself I tend to like some of the functional architecture and other modern types, but this is of course quite horrible! The ones I like is often the unique quality architecture of that time!

To be honest I can't say I'm terrible sorry for the loss. The old building was fairly anonymous and not something I would have cared much about if it had been kept. It's shame though the replacement turned out to be such a ugly piece of shit, so hopefully this will be knocked down and replaced with something worthwhile.

Another one of Oslos many lost buildings:

The building in the middle and the one to the right:

Was replaced with this green shitty horror in the '70s. This modern building is now protected by Riksantikvaren, our local answer to Kim Jong-il:

Hehe, well I can find that building some what cool looking, and it really seems to be a true example of the brutalist architecture of that era. But I don´t say it´s nice looking (which the old building there was ) but kind of cool in it´s own way...

A reconstruction of Bergen the way it is believed to have looked in 1350.

A approved proposal of demolishing a area known as Marken in Bergen and replace it with these highrises. Local protests got the area protected and it subsequently did not happen.

A proposed twelve stories high highrise to take the place occupied by Kjøttbasaren in Bergen. The local protested against it again.

The locals of Bergen are to be commended for their good sense.

The citizens of Oslo not so much

All the proposals for Oslo was met with equal amount of criticism and protests. People chained themself to the buildings, and it wasn't out of joy for the proposed replacements. It was the politicians that differed. Oslo was the capital and hence the politicians probably put greater effort into getting projects through here in a effort to repair war-damage, to remove the foreign looking architecture (the country had just been under foreign occupation remember) and to make the country as such appear modern and forward-looking.

The after-war situation in Oslo and Bergen was quite different. Oslo basicly had the role as the "national housing institution", and even though the politicians were in it, there also was hard preassure from the state level to push in more housing and making room for building a new state from the capital and outwards. I don't think the gov. quarter could've been stopped any more in Bergen, for instance.

Not sure how interesting it is (especially for people who don't live here in the city), but here are few more Oslo of yore pictures.

Eh: Is this tread only supposed to cover lost buildings (if then I probably did wrong above) or is it all old pictures?

I didn't know that Drammen had been a proper city. A shame to see all that have been lost.
