I guess the biggest loss (of more prominent buildings) is the building on the southwest corner of Bragernes Torg. The hotel, whose name I can't recall, burned down in the 80s. Much of the wooden architecture in downtown, the so-called "Drammenshus" has gradually been replaced by taller (and less prone to fire) city blocks.

Estonian National Opera building. Designed by Finnish architects Armas Lindgren and Wivi Lönn. After soviet bombing in 1944 they renovated it and changed most of the facade.

Molde of yore. It was once a popular holiday destination for German tourists and was know for its many luxurious hotels and rose-filled gardens. One third of the city burned down in 21 January 1916 and the rest was lost during air raids in WW2.

I found this picture of Toompea (Tallinn), which is taken from the train station. Can somebody help me identify the year when it was taken?
The Stenbock house doesn't have a balcony (which is funny, cause I believe the original house had a balcony) and the Toompea hill side is not covered with a stone wall. From the cyrillic letters (what does it say?) on Stenbock house I assume it is photographed sometime before the Wabariik, around 1900? ![]() Picture is from Tallinna Linnamuuseum I found few more pictures: Similar angle, year 1898, balcony and no stone wall http://www.riigikantselei.ee/stenboc...u_toompea2.png Similar angle, year 1910, no balcony and a stone wall http://www.riigikantselei.ee/stenboc...u_toompea4.png Last edited by Pliiatsid; May 4th, 2012 at 08:22 PM. |

A photograph of Viru-väravad from Tallinn taken between 1888 (is when they started using horse-drawn tram transport to and from the oldtown) and 1898 (when they rebuilt parts of the left tower).
![]() (Photograph is from Tallinna Linnamuuseum) For comparison, how it looks today (the two towers are the only things remaining there from the year 1446) ![]() I think I will make a separate thread for old Tallinn photographs. |

It's interesting that there's very similar postcard from same era > http://digar.nlib.ee/digar/show/OPAC...d_id/b24606224 Can't really make out what that Russian banner on Stenbock house says. Maybe there's some hint in it? Oh,and check out this place: http://www.nlib.ee/index.php?id=17313 Quote:
