Thanks. That last pic was taken from one the many "golis" with highrises on each side.

After a year in sector v things have certainly improved.

1.Last time i was here the place was a mess with the water pipeline project going on,the roads were dug up and everything was extremely dusty.
2.This time around the pipe line project is over, thankfully the roads have been relaid and everything looks better
3.On some of the roads brand new tiled pavements have come up with fences, which looked clean, and thankfully one can safely walk on them rather than walking on the road and trying to avoid piles of construction equipment.

4.But it cannot be said a "showcase" area by any stretch of imagination.

Other than the few main roads the smaller roads leading uo to big projects like videocon, godrej genesis, waterside look in a very sorry state.Potholed with huge craters, shrubs on the dividers growing wild, and rubbish piled on open VATs.

Offices in kolkata have a symbiotic relationship with "cha biscut/kochuri dokan".This time around many more have sprouted taking space in pavements, dumping rubbish on the road and attracting slums to the area.On one hand u have glitzy buildings and just below u have thatched huts everywhere.

Other than that roads are still not well kept,no dedicated parking space or a multilevel park, roads become clogged during rush hours.

Some new projects like a large AMBUJA It project is U?C just after the wipro crossing.

Those jhuggis / stalls give a horrible look to Nabadiganta. The authorities and the political parties will do nothing on this issue because of vote bank reasons. The only way out is if people stop patronizing such jobor dokhol stalls. Maybe the authorities should build a couple of highrise foodcourts and accommodate all the stalls there and help the stall owners get loans. That way no one is hurt economically.

those highrise foodcourts should be built first. else the chakurijibis will not get cheap food and they also might join in the protest. then those footpath stalls should be rehabilitated, followed by continuous monitoring of further jobordokhols -- stopping them right at the beginning, when the party comes with bamboo poles and plastic sheets.

It is not going to happen. They will never shift to high rise food courts because building them takes money and there i am sure they would be asked to pay some money for stalls, which they wont agree too.

Also our suit-tie office people love sipping cha from roadside stalls right at the office gates so much that for them going to separate food courts, paying more and sitting in a clean environment is too ask for.

The jhuggis can always run for the nearest politician and bemoan how there livelihood is being destroyed, higher powers are "profiting" from food courts, and modern westernized retail is a removing local shops.

Sigh

The social culture of slurping on cheap food from shacks is not going to go away anytime soon. You have stray dogs and pigs around to add to the nice environment. Everything is washed in dirty water. People dump stuff wherever they want to. All the office paras like BBD Bag, Central Avenue, Camac Street area etc are like that.

That's why unlike in French homes where you have bottles of wines, in Bengal homes you have bottles of stomach medicines from carmozyme to digene.

To sum up Sector V is a work in progress project, but I hope there is some end date in mind. IMO along with pavements and guard railings NDITA should spend money on creating more road space within Sector V. Also now with the sewarage project complete and a better garbage system in place, things should improve on the overall cleanliness front.

Yes, AMBUJA IT park is finally u/c across the Wipro SEZ.

The term "showpiece" is a favoured word amongst journalists trying hard to be sarcastic. So we have Salt Lake City - as "Left Front's showpiece township". Then we have Rajarhat Township as "Buddhadev Government's showpiece satellite city". Yesterday one TOI journalist was calling Gariahat flyover a "showpiece flyover". They themselves brand something as "showpiece" and then try to criticize it.

The term "world class" is also very popular but mostly in a serious way. In case of other states/cities which are in the good books of sold out media houses, everything is "world class". Twenty storey highrises are considered to be giving you the look and feel of Shanghai. Journalists do PR campaigns for projects in the form of "news". Not much gloom and doom criticism even if project land is barren for several years. No such nice treatment in case of Rajarhat.

Well said.I also think that alongwith spending money on building 'fancy' road-dividers and tiled pavements, now the major emphasis should be on creating more road space in Sec V.If its not possible to turn Sector V into a so-called 'showpiece' area, atleast it should be made to look as a descent office location, which it is presently not!

My office has recently got shifted to this place and what I find is that most of the by-lanes are in complete mess and the traffic system of the entire area is in a horrible condition, specially around the crossings like College More,Electronics City entrance etc.During the rush hours, most of the times the traffic guards are found to be absent on the major stretch and even during their almost ‘non-existing’ presence, the vehicles have to cross the stretch based on their own 'senses',will power' and risk taking attitudes in order to drive safe .Its very shocking to find that how can be an important road stretch like this,be neglected so much by the authority.
Its a well known fact that most of the roads in Sec V are narrow and very little have been done to widen them or improve something in this direction. It is also being found that even after the completion of the drainage project, the surfaces of the roads have not been properly laid down anywhere,so although new footpaths have been laid, the extra road space can't be utilized by vehicles in absence of proper road surface! At almost all the crossings, the design of the pavements and road-dividers create problem in smooth traffic flow.In addition to this, garbage disposal is not done properly, the streets are poorly lit and the area looks like a big village-'haat' after dark,in the presence of hundreds of shanties & hawkers on the road-side ,huge vehicular population and lakhs of commuters plying on road. With so many new high profile projects coming up in Sec V,its now high time that the authority pays attention to this problem if it really wants to attract investment to the sector!

Unfortunately no one in power wants to remove hawkers or shanties. It goes against the "moral ethics" of the political, social, adminstrative and intellectual elite who earn their "living" or "TV time" shedding crocodile tears for the poor and oppressed.

I second your thoughts fully! sometimes I wonder whether there is any end to this state of apathy and double standards...

It was Simoco..now referred to as Godrej Genesis..

yeah..it will be a stunner. It has been topped out for sometime now, the glass facade should be put anytime now. I also think they may demolish the existing godrej building in front of it to create more open space ( according the render)
