yes, that land belongs to the army (Bihar warriors) and I have not seen our armed forces parting with prime land easily.

Memorandum for Mamata from IT hub

The Sector V Stakeholders' Association, an apolitical body comprising representatives from several IT companies of Sector V, would send a memorandum to Mamata Banerjee after she is sworn in as chief minister. The memorandum will suggest ways the new government could follow to improve and develop civic amenities in the IT hub.

Association president S Radhakrisnan said all stakeholders in Sector V would soon meet and compile suggestions on how civic amenities in the IT hub could be improved. "We'll hold a meeting to discuss several issues after which we will send a memorandum to Mamata Banerjee on what more could be done to develop Sector V," he said.

The association had earlier suggested that the Nabadiganta Industrial Township Authority (NDITA) set up proper food kiosks in the IT hub. They said there are numerous food stalls in the area but Sector V should have neat and clean food kiosks. The association had also urged NDITA to allow companies put up billboards with their names atop these kiosks and maintain them.

"The association's committee members are meeting next week to prepare a blueprint which we will handover to the new government. We'll request the newly-elected government to improve the IT hub's infrastructure, convert Sector V into a model city and chalk out plans to improve its business environment," Acclaris India MD Kalyan Kar said.

Globsyn Group chairman Bikram Dasgupta said Sector V's development should be emphasized as it generates substantial business for the entire state. "We should consider beautifying the place to increase its feel good factor among youngsters working there." He said authorities also need to take a re-look at night vigil in the sector as employees, including many women, commute to and from it well after dark.

Before the elections, Kolkata Police was handed responsibility for managing traffic along Rajarhat's main arterial road. Local residents and association members feel there was lack of coordination between Kolkata Police and Bengal Police which has jurisdiction over Sector V. The association had written to the state chief secretary and home secretary urging them to entrust Kolkata Police the job of policing Sector V.

The association also feels there should be restrictions on movement of trucks and other heavy vehicles in Sector V. It was observed that many trucks and other heavy vehicles pass through Sector V throughout the day, creating traffic chaos. Employees working in Sector V also said there were many things the IT hub requires. "A medicine shop is urgently required here. Traffic management should improve and the sewerage system needs sprucing up," said Upamanyu Roy Chowdhury, a Sector V employee.

KOLKATA: Plots in Salt Lake Sector V lying vacant for more than three years have come under the newly formed government scanner. Industries and IT minister Partha Chatterjee visited the Webel office and Sector V on Saturday to take stock of the scenario.

Officials say there are about 150 plots, measuring two to five cottahs. Many of these were leased out to firms but remained utilized. A committee was formed in 2005 under the then chief secretary Amit Kiran Deb to look into the distribution of plots but the re-allotment did not occur.

The Nabadiganta Industrial Township Authority (NDITA) that will now be merged with the Kolkata Municipal Corporation had once mulled over taking back the unutilized industrial plots and place these for auction. The price ranges between Rs 5 cr and Rs 10 cr per cottah.

"The matter is with the urban development department," said NDITA chairman S A Ahmed.

Urban development department secretary Debasis Sen said no land in Salt Lake or anywhere could not be distributed or sold off. "The handing over of plot happens through a process of inviting applications and then through lottery system," he said.

A few years ago, the state urban development department had considered expansion of the Sector V core area by including some of the added areas surrounding the IT hub to meet the increasing demand. The Kolkata Metropolitan Development Authority (KMDA) was asked to prepare a land use masterplan to enable the authorities to keep tabs which of the added areas were lying vacant and which could be utilized. Sector V consist of 430 acres.

All these beautification schemes are extremely heartening and will bring about a much needed cosmetic change to the face of our city. This does have a positive impact on the morale of the population as well as first impressions of a visitor. However, beauty, like elsewhere, needs to be more than skin deep. Widening of the roads, building flyovers should take precedence over cosmesis, otherwise, these beautifying things will need to be chopped down again a few years later.

Examples include a 'solution' for VIP road, consideration of an inner ring road before the Strand is beautified etc.

One hopes that the Super CMO is considering these before investing money into beautifying.

Sec-5 needs few grade separators, as during rush hour, these areas remain choc-a-bloc...

Sector V today is a prestigous commercial place in Eastern india thanks to practically no competition from other cities in the east. It does not stand anywhere close compared with IT/commercial zones in the west, south or north.

@ Arijeet: If it is a multi-level parking, then it would one of the best steps take by the authorities...IMO..OMR, Chennai, is the largest IT corridor in India!!

Heard that Nitish G is inviting IT investors to Bihar, if that happens, Bengal would b dwarfed..!

I think many people had similar worries that because of presence of IT companies in another eastern city and the late start of IT in Kolkata, Kolkata would never be favoured even in eastern India. That has been proven to be wrong. Both cities have done reasonably ok. Boost in IT sector in Bihar will not be a bad thing for Bengal.

I fully agree. Infy had a presence in Bhuvaneshwar in the late 90's when Kolkata had only TCS as a major IT employer. India needs to aggresively promote and develop tier 2/3 cities in IT. IT/technology related growth in Orissa and Bihar is good for the region as a whole.

man, why can't you be +ve about things? last cpm govt. was a good for nothing bullcrap, it has done more damage than good things for the state, & whatever good work was done, it was only by buddhadev bhattacharya, that too @ the end. the way things are going now, the way our new CM is working hard (which reminds me of anil kapoor's role in the hindi movie 'nayak'), the scenario will be completely different in another couple of years. IMO, west bengal is going to be a far better place to live in than the southern states in near future.

& come on, which bangalore & chennai are you guys talking about? you kolkata people are so dumb, you know nothing which actually goes on here down in south. its easy to launch comments sitting far away in kolkata. boss, ekhane ek baar bhalo bhabhe (yes, that means not a trip for mere 6-7 days) theke jaan, jonmodatar naam bhuila jaaben, & only then shall you know about reality. you kolkata people have no idea how aggresive, greedy & corrupt people are here down in south. don't worry, its just not your fault, you have the same impression about south just as the foreign investors, that's why they tend to invest more in south. if I start describing the rudeness of the people over here, I may not even end today!
