Spain’s CAF delivers first new trains for Bucharest subway

Quote:
Spain’s Construcciones y Auxiliar de Ferrocarriles (CAF) will deliver in mid-November, a month and a half before the deadline, the first in the series of eight trains ordered by Metrorex, the company informs in a communiqué.

“I am happy to announce that following CAF’s efforts to speed-up its delivery schedule, the first in the series of 8 new trains for Bucharest is ready to be delivered. A second vehicle has also been tested under the supervision of Metrorex officials at the CAF unit in Spain, successfully passing all factory tests and receiving the provisional acceptance certificate. In the shortest of times we will transport the first train to Romania, in order for it to reach the Metrorex depot in the first half of November,” said Antonio Campos, CAF Area Director International Business Department.

The new CAF trains were bought on the basis of a contract signed by Metrorex in November 2014. The trains are equipped with the latest automatic control and protection systems.

The article is a little vague, so I'll clear things up a bit: in November we will receive the first of the extra 8 trainsets that were an option in the original contract for 16 trains that have already been delivered 2 years ago. Meanwhile Metrorex has obtained EU financing for this particular contract, so they also ordered the extra 8. There were rumours that they would discard the extra trains due to some serious issues with the original 16 (frequent breakdowns in service hours, missings parts, a train out of service for a few motnhs, etc). Let's just hope that the new ones have all their kinks ironed out...

Bucharest Metro partial road collapse reported

By Tris Thomas on December 15, 2015

Romanian media has reported a partial road collapse on the City Center to Drumul Taberei stretch of the Bucharest Metro Line 5. The road is damaged in the Eroilor area, one of the capital’s busiest residential areas. Contractors have poured some 190cum of concrete to stabilize the area whilst heavy monitoring checks for possible settlement. Possible structural damage to residential buildings has also been reported leading to the evacuation and temporary re-location of 14 people on Sunday. Romania’s Transport Ministry has indicated that the events are associated with water and mud drainage following TBM breakthrough into the underground Heroes Station at Eroilor. The Drumul Taberei – Eroilor section of the Metro is being built by a JV of Astaldi/FCC Construccion/Delta ACM/AB Construct.

The project is being financed by EU funds with total contract awards totalling €585M thus far.

First metro Line M5 trainset arrives in București
22 Dec 2015

ROMANIA: CAF has delivered the first of eight trainsets that it is supplying for metro Line M5 in București. The train was transported by Rail Cargo Group and arrived on December 18, one month earlier than stipulated in the contract with CAF.

Metro operator Metrorex exercised an option in November 2014 for CAF to supply eight six-car trainsets similar to those that have been in service on Line M2 since July 2014. The €47m order is financed with European Investment Bank funds

The article is wrong. Those trainsets have NOTHING to do with the M5, they will be used for raising the frequency on the M2, which will now have only CAF trainsets, while the older Bombardier trains will move to M1/M3, improving waiting times there as well.

The tender for the M5 trainsets is still stuck in court after the National Anticorruption Agency has started an investigation for an eleged dodgy procedure that allowed CAF to win. If this isn't sorted in time for the opening 2 years from now, M5 will have to use trains borrowed from the other lines, lowering frequencies all-around the system

OVER EUR 300 M FOR EXPANSION AND UPGRADING OF SUBWAY NETWORK
metrorex

Over EUR 300 M for expansion and upgrading of subway network

Quote:
+ Almost 10 km under construction, other subway lines in technical design stage + * Bucharest subway network closing in on 100 km of functional lines

In an interview for Agerpres, Marin Aldea, the interim CEO of Metrorex (the company that manages the Bucharest subway network), stated that the company he leads will carry out investments of RON 1.403 bln in 2016. The goals are ambitious and concern the expansion of the subway network.

Thus, works on the expansion of Main Line 5 (from Eroilor to Drumul Taberei, Raul Doamnei and the Valea Ialomitei Rail Yard) are currently ongoing. This project costs RON 3.1 bln. The extension has 10 subway stations and measures approximately 7 km. RON 780 M have been included for this project in this year’s budget. “We need almost two times that in order to attain our goal for this year, namely to go from a physical [completion] stage of 67 per cent to 90 per cent, in order to be able to open it to passenger traffic at the end of Q1 2017,” Marin Aldrea emphasised.

Another important project is the expansion of Main Line 4, from Gara de Nord to Lac Straulesti. The expansion includes two subway stations – Laminorului and Lac Straulesti. The project costs around EUR 250 M. RON 270 M have been included in this year’s budget. The funds are sufficient to complete the two stations. Another RON 60 M would be needed to complete the railway yard and the terminal. A park-and-ride is located there.

The company’s deputy CEO states that Metrorex is mulling the improvement and upgrading of subway stations. A project on upgrading and replacing all ventilation systems in six stations and inter-stations are ongoing and will be finalized this year. The project costs RON 36 M. Around RON 20 M have been included for it in this year’s budget.

Another project concerns the upgrading of the access control system in 41 stations, as well as the preliminary technical design of the Eroilor – Iancului section.

In what concerns Main Line 6, which links 1 Mai to Otopeni locality, the company is currently engaged in identifying sources of financing. The project has been included in the Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan – a medium and long-term strategy on the development of the transport system in Bucharest and Ilfov County.

“Likewise, we have a project for the procurement of rolling stock. There is a contract in force and we are buying another eight new subway trains that we will commission by the end of June on Main Line 2, so that a single type of subway train would be in operation on Main Line 2, from Berceni to Pipera. The trains we procure and commission will replace a similar number of trains from the old fleet,” Aldea pointed out.

I certainly hope the finished stations on this new line look better and brighter than those very amateurish-looking mock-ups! Are there plans to renovate the existing stations? I distinctly remember that, although the stations have their own charms - along with distinctly damp and musty smells - they could certainly do with some serious and proper updating. And are there still plans to introduce one ticket that works both above and below ground, such as a travel-card?

There are plans to upgrade existent stations but nothing concrete so far. As for the travel card, there was a common one for Bucharest public transport but it was withdrawn due to misunderstandings on payment between the municipality who owns RATB (bus and tramway transport) and METROREX which is owned by the government. But they plan to reintroduce it.

M6 again.

Ministry of Transport plans big infrastructure project

Quote:
Ministry of Transport (MT) will launch in the next period, a large infrastructure project of urban regeneration that will include subway M6 line which will link Henri Coanda International Airport to Bucharest North railway station (Gara de Nord) and completing the railway which will go directly to Romania’s main airport.

“MT aims to revitalize the railway. We want to move freight transport by rail. In this sense, we will launch a large project that will involve urban regeneration and will be focused on railway development,” Mariana Ionita, director within the relevant ministry announced on Tuesday.

According to MT official, there is needed the simplifying the implementation of investments at national level. In this sence, a Group of Infrastructure was constituted under the direct leadership of the Prime Minister, Dacian Ciolos.
“Other steps that we will take for the next period are related to the changing of normatives of roads and railways design, and here we are talking about simplifying them, an amalgam of normatives. We do not need indicative feasibility studies, but of some very detailed,” Ionita added.

Bucharest metro line 4 receives funds from EU for 1.89 km expansion

Quote:
European Commissioner Corina Cretu’s office announced today that a major infrastructure project aimed at the expansion of one of Bucharest’s metro lines has been approved for funding in two phases.

The metro line 4, which runs from the railway station Gara de Nord to Bazilescu Park, will be expanded by 1.89 km to Straulesti. The initial estimated value of the project reaches EUR 97.7 million.

The first phase, assigned for European funding within the 2007-2013 program, has an eligible value of EUR 65 million, of which EUR 55 million will be co-financed by the EU. The second phase will fall into the 2014-2020 financing period.

“It is an important project for Bucharest, for the public transport in the capital city. About 50 thousand inhabitants of neighborhoods Bucurestii Noi and Chitila will enjoy direct access to the subway system. The population of northwestern cities of Bucharest such as Mogosoaia, Buftea and Chitila will benefit also from easier access to a high capacity transport network. This project will help increase the comfort of Bucharest residents by reducing congestion and pollution,” says the commissioner.

The line extension is estimated to reduce by some 65 percent travel time by public transport along this corridor and is expected to be used by over 3.6 million passengers per year.

This major infrastructure project is part of the Transport Operational Program, Priority Ax 1, “Modernization and development of TEN-T core network in order to develop a sustainable transport system integrated with EU transport networks” and runs through the Cohesion Fund.

METROREX plans to contract prefesability works this year for another expansion of M4 line in the south direction, from Gara de Nord to Gara Progresu. It will make the longest continuos line of Bucharest Metro together with the line to Otopeni Airport of 33 km and 28 stations (in magenta below). The project is estimated at EUR 1 B.
http://www.economica.net/metrorex-sc...su_120269.html

The Swiss finance the feasibility studies for Gara de Nord–Gara Progresu line

Quote:
On July 12, 2012, the State Secretariat for Economic Affairs (SECO) of the Swiss Confederation has approved the final proposal on the financing project amounting to CHF 10 Million, VAT non-included, suggested by Metrorex. The contribution of the Swiss part will reach CHF 8.5 Million. Within the agreement, Metrorex has submitted the project on the execution of the pre-feasibility study and of the feasibility study for the construction of the underground line 4, represented by the section between Gara de Nord and Gara Progresu.
The action ranks among the measures included in the framework agreement concluded between the Swiss Federal Council and the Government of Romania on the implementation of the Swiss-Romanian cooperation programme for the reduction of economic and social disparities within the European Union, signed on September 7, 2010.
Within the project, two studies will also be performed on the multimodal transport in Bucharest and the increase of traffic on the underground line 4. Likewise, it is considered the conclusion of an institutional partnership between Metrorex and the public transport companies in Switzerland. A.M.

Dude, don't believe everything you read in the media. Actually, no, the media never said finishing works are ongoing on ALL 10 stations, so you just implied that, which is worse. Such would be impossible, since 3 of the stations are far behind schedule, two of them are barely past 50% in term of structure works. The only reason finishing works are done in some of the more completed stations is because the structure and finishing contracts have both been won by the same company, Astaldi. And the deadline is ridiculous, there's no way th M5 will be opened anytime next years, there is just too much left to be done. And anyway, we have NO trains fit to run on it, since the tender is stalled for a year due to legal reasons, and the current Metrorex trains are insufficient for current needs and are incompatible with the new signaling system on the M5.

What I've said above still applies, "official" ministry press release or not. As if they are ever fully truthfull about anything. Reality says that today, 3 stations are far behind schedule on structure works, so it's impossible for any finishing works to happen there. Also, Academia Militara is the center of operation for the tunneling works; until the last TBM is extracted, months from now, no finishing operation can take place here, as there is still earth moved around and out of the station and tunnel pieces fed inside

The following stations are projected: Pajura, Expozitiei, Montreal Square, Baneasa train station, Baneasa Airport, Tokyo, Washington, Paris, Bruxelles, Otopeni, Ion I. C. Bratianu and Otopeni Airport.

The terrain covered by the line crosses Bucharest’s District 1 and is partially owned by private individuals, the report further shows, and they will be expropriated for a public utility cause.

The line will offer access to important points across the city, such as Romexpo, the Free Press Square, the Herastrau Park, the two airports, Baneasa and Otopeni, Baneasa Shopping City and the Police Academy. The connection with the rest of the metro network will be made at 1 Mai station (Line 4).

The plan also includes a number of restrictions and recommendations for the areas it crosses, such as a mandatory preservation and enhancement of the Romexpo pavilion building, the green spaces bordering the Kiseleff Boulevard and the Baneasa Airport building.

The works on subway M6connection Bucharest – Henry Coanda Airport, as of next year

Quote:
Starting the execution stage of Metro line 6 is estimated for 2017, Metrorex (the public company running Bucharest subway) stated in a press release on Friday. According to the public company data, Metro line 6 is one of the most advanced projects in terms of preparing the documentation necessary for this stage.

Calendar drafted by Metrorex 2016 includes the approval through Government Decision of project’s technical – economic indicators, the approval of the Bucharest – Ilfov Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan, the submission of the application for funding from external non- reimbursable funds and launching specific actions of the tendering stage for works structure.

The total investment is RON 5.89 billion, VAT included.

M6 Line will have a route of 14.2 km and includes 16 stations: 4 stations shared with the existing M4 Line and 12 planned new stations: Pajura, Expoziţiei, Piaţa Montreal, Gara Băneasa, Aeroport Băneasa, Tokyo, Washington, Paris, Bruxelles, Otopeni, Ion I.C. Brătianu, and Aeroport Otopeni.

For preparing and implementing the project was signed a loan agreement (March 2010), between the Ministry of Finance and the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), amounting to 41.870 million yen (about EUR 355 million). The loan amount provides consultancy services financing, design, works supervision and part of the works value for implementation of structural strength (33 percent).
