EC approves EUR 170 M grants for Bucharest subway line 5

Quote:
The European Commission (EC) approved on Tuesday a financial contribution of EUR 170 million grant funds for major changes in “Bucharest subway line 5 line 5 project, Raul Doamnei – Eroilor (PS Opera) section, including Valea Ialomitei,” a press release informs.

The decision aims at staggering the project into two phases, the first being included in the 2007-2013 programming period, and the second is going to be financed in the 2014-2020 programming period, EC says. This splitting was carried out in two phases so the project to further be financed from European funds, the Commission representatives explained.

Following EC decision, the first phase of the project has an eligible amount of nearly EUR 200 million, of which almost EUR 170 million are co-financing from the European Union through the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF). The total project value is over EUR 480 million.

“Line 5 subway construction is a project of great importance for the inhabitants of Bucharest as it will reduce travel time between Drumul Taberei district and Eroilor area by almost 20 minutes. It’s estimated that more than half of the 335,000 residents of Dumul Taberei and adjacent areas will use the upcoming subway line. However, it’s expected this line to lead to traffic’s decongest in the west area of the capital,” EU Commissioner for Regional Policy Corina Crețu stated.

The line being extended, Metro Line 5, has a length of 6.7 km, and includes 10 metro stations as well as a depot at its western end. Each train will have six cars and are expected to travel at speeds of up to 80 km/h.

Metro line 5 represents the fifth metro corridor in Bucharest, and is increasing the total length of the network from 69 km to about 76 km.

The project is creating an estimated 48 jobs during the implementation process, and 1 200 new jobs upon completion.

București tram funds allocated
25 Jul 2016

ROMANIA: An amendment to the București city budget for 2016 has allocated €7·3m to transport authority RATB. Most of this will be used to modernise and procure trams.

Modernisation work on 10 trams, budgeted at €4·2m, will include the replacement of the middle section with a low-floor middle. Bogies, traction motors and brakes will also be replaced

Meh, this is not necessarily news, modernisation works like this have been going on for the last decade, transforming old V3A trams into brand new V3A-93-CH-PPC or the newer V3A-2010-CA (the old ones are completely scrapped, despite the word "modernisation"!). So far, about 50 of these trams have been made.

Also, a new generation of trams is being build from scratch in our local factory, the Bucur LowFloor (Bucur LF) model, with low-floor 2.3 of the total lenght of the tram. Currently, the 15th one is in production.

Back on-topic, the only good news in the article above, is the fact that after about 5 years of chronic underfinancing by our mayor, RATB (the public transport operator) is finally getting funds for necesarry repairs and investments, including a new round of modernisations and new Bucur LF trams . Which is very good news. Sadly, no news about new trams from a large producer, everything is locally made for now, slowly...

Bucharest subway operator to complete Line 4 expansion by December
8 Aug 2016

Quote:
Bucharest’s subway network operator Metrorex will complete the Line 4 expansion by December this year. The two new stations, namely Laminorului and Straulesti, are almost finalized, reports local Digi24.

The new section will be 1.9-km long, linking Parc Bazilescu station to Straulesti stop. Metrorex estimated that the new section would be able to carry some 50,000 people per hour.

The new Straulesti station will be the first naturally illuminated metro stop in Bucharest, reports Digi24. It will also be connected to the first inter-modal node in Bucharest, which will include 690 parking spaces, and bus stations.

Line 4 currently has six stations, namely Gara de Nord 2, Basarab 2, Grivita, 1 Mai, Jiului and Parc Bazilescu. The Bucharest subway network has a length of 69.25 kilometers, divided into four lines that have 51 stations in total.

Metrorex is currently working on the fifth line, which connects the busy Drumul Taberei residential area to the city center. The European Union approved in July a EUR 170 million funding for the first phase of the project.

The Bucharest metro operator Metrorex should also start building another subway line next year, to connect the capital’s main train station Gara de Nord to the Henri Coanda International Airport.

Romanian capital to get subway line to airport by 2022
Sep 29, 2016 0
Quote:
BUCHAREST, Romania (AP) — The city council of Romania's capital, Bucharest, has approved a one billion-euro ($1.12 billion) project to build a subway connecting the city to the main airport.

Officials said Thursday that the 14-kilometer (8.8-mile) underground line will have 12 stations, and will run from a residential area in northern Bucharest to the Henri Coanda Airport. It will stop at a major shopping center, the U.S. Embassy and the ring road, among other places.

Ionel Oprea, technical manager of Metrorex, which runs the city's subway, said work will begin next year and will likely be completed in 2022. One third of the project will be financed by a loan from Japan. The European Union and the state budget will cover the rest.

Oprea said 55 private properties would be moved.

More on Bucharest metro developments. Lots of action to follow:

First phase of Bucharest’s 5th metro line to be finished by mid-2017, second phase in plan
3 Oct 2016

Quote:
Work on the Eroilor-Drumul Taberei section of the Bucharest metro Line 5, which is the first phase of the project, is to be completed by mid-2017, Ionel Oprea, technical director of Bucharest metro operator Metrorex, said last week.

The second section of the metro line, which will link Eroilor to Iancului, is also in plan and will most likely be completed in 2021, said transport minister Sorin Buse, reports local News.ro.

The Ministry of Transport will start the tender process for the second phase’s design and execution by early November this year. This procedure will last six-nine months, and then the authorities will organize the auction. Next in the process is the design period, followed by the construction period, which will take 36 months, according to the minister.

Thus, the second section of the metro line 5 could be ready by 2021.

Bucharest’s Line 6, which will connect the main train station to the airport, should also be completed around that time.

EU gives EUR 170 mln for first phase of Bucharest 5th metro line

Meanwhile, Bucharest will have a new metro station on Line 4 by the end of December this year.

Sorin Buse participated on Sunday at the Open Day at Laminorului Station event organized by Metrorex. This station, which is the newest stop on Line 4, is to be completed and opened by the end of the year. See pictures below.

“We have the chance to see a modern metro station from all points of view. I am glad that architects and designers have taken into account a better access for Laminorului station. For example, there are 10 escalators installed in this station, compared to 2-4 in other stations,” the minister said after visiting the station.

Bucharest buys 500 new buses, 30% of them will be electric
Quote:
The Bucharest City Hall is now preparing the documentation to buy 500 new buses, 30% of which will be electric, said Bucharest mayor Gabriela Firea.

The first new buses will arrive next spring, she added. They will be modern, “with many technical details,” and facilities for people with disabilities.

The buses will also provide the possibility to monitor the people who are travelling by bus. It will be a “mathematical monitoring” of all the bus riders, the mayor said. This will ensure that all the bus riders will travel with tickets.

The Bucharest mayor has changed her mind several times about acquiring new or used buses.

Bucharest metro stations to be equipped with tactile paving

Quote:
The visually impaired people will be able to move more easily in the metro stations in Bucharest, as subway operator Metrorex decided to equip the stations with ceramic tactile paving.

Metrorex approved the acquisition of consulting and design services for this project on May 10. The project targets 49 stations that don’t have special paving.

The route for visually impaired people has already been drawn in two new stations on metro line 4, namely Jiului and Bazilescu Park, by installing special ceramic tiles, according to a statement of Metrorex.

“The finishing projects for Line 5 and for the two new stations on Line 4 include facilities for people with disabilities, such as elevators and specifically marked lanes,” reads the statement.

When necessary, the trained personnel can help people with disabilities reach the platform more easily.

The metro maps displayed inside the stations indicate through specific icons the stations that can be easily accessed by people with disabilities. The information are also available on Metrorex’s website, and on the brochures containing the Metrorex map.

Not just yet, no...

It's a very good idea, and if properly done, it will provide a great link in the future to the main railway in the area, diverting trains directly to the airport, on route to Bucharest North station. Still, this proposal only comes in a period of searching for new projects to build on the current EU funds, thanks to a more transparent goverment. Still this in Romania, so any plan in the media doesn't really mean anything until the first spade hits the ground.

We are waiting for the tender for the Fesability study for this project, and after that, hopefullu, construction comences. The problem is that this project must be closely coordinated with the construction of the M6, as they both use the same land in the airport's vecinity, possibly even a common station, as the ministry declared once...

M6 technical and economic indicators have been finalised by the Government, and tender is scheduled for next year, and is planned to be completed by 2021.

Estimated investment is EUR 1.3 billion, and will be covered from Japan Gov loan, EU funds and local funds.
Lenght: 14 km

That's the media statement, anyway. I'd love to see how the M4 will be opened without signaling and fire-retardant systems, that have yet to be instaled (they've just recently been tendered!)

Bucharest City to purchase 400 buses, 100 trolleys, and 100 trams

Quote:
The municipal counselors of the Capital have adopted on Wednesday two decisions by which 400 buses, 100 trolleys, and 100 trams will be purchased.

Bucharest City Mayor Gabriela Firea has specified that the car fleet of Bucharest’s public transport operator RATB is “old”, and “is surpassed in moral and physical use”, and Bucharest people want new and good-performing buses and trams.

“We have very good specialists in mobility who have stated their point of view and have stated that we need further investments in the factory, as the RATB plant can produce trams, but at this point, lacks the technical capacity to do it. But, together, we will contribute in order for the URAC [RATB Repair Plant – Central Workshops] to benefit from the investments and produce Romanian trams. Likewise, we will also continue with the acquisitions until the point we can all affirm that we have accomplished our mandate to the Bucharest people, and public transport is a viable alternative”, Gabriela Firea stated within the meeting of the General Council of Bucharest City (CGMB).

She added that the purchase must be completed by other measures, such as: building dedicated bus lanes, building parking lots at the entrance of Bucharest and near subway stations, a more efficient collaboration with the Traffic, Local, Municipal and District Police, to streamline road traffic.

“These are measures taken in all the European capitals and proven to be efficient. We should not invent other solutions, because they already exist. We must only apply these ones, of course, taking care in having these procedures more transparent, the purchases be done through electronic methods, with no human intervention, no subjectivism,” Firea stated.

According to the adopted decision, out of 400 buses, 320 are of the 12 meter length variety, 50 of the 10 meter variety, and 30 articulated buses of the 18 meter variety.

Both buses, as well as trolleys will be purchased on the basis of a multi-annual program, over a four year period, starting from 2017.

According to the second decision, Bucharest City Hall will purchase 100 trams, of which 90 will be medium size, 36 meters length and ten special two-way trams of 27 meters length, within a multi-annual program, over a four year period, starting from 2017.

In the case of both projects, the funding will be ensured by City Hall, and the necessary sums will be earmarked in the annual budgets of the Bucharest City Hall.

There was a discussion about electric buses, but it is not specifically mentioned in the local council resolution. However, this means only more freedom of decision for the city, not necesarily that they already made their mind not to buy electric buses.
