According to today's Sing Tao, apparently Nina Tower wasn't even supposed to be the tallest in the area:

(星島日報報道)針對最近高樓大廈愈起愈高,被批評造成屏風效應。規劃署首次為勾地表內的荃灣楊屋道商業地皮,展開空氣流通評估研究﹔該幅原用作興建區內最高大廈的土地,其發展地積比率、樓宇高度、大廈數目、以至大廈之間的間距,都有機會為配合空氣流通而被修訂,並寫入賣地條款中。有測量師預計,地價將因為限制增加而大打折扣。

Apparently the plot next to Nina Tower on Yeung Uk Rd was set aside to build the area's tallest, but the news is saying that it's being re-evaluated now coz of all the talk about the walled-in effect :-/ bummer.

It's said that the building's owner, Nina Wang, passed away yesterday (Apr. 3rd, HK time). She has been the richest woman in Asia for many years.

Hong Kong's richest woman Nina Wang dies at age 69
The Associated Press
Published: April 4, 2007

HONG KONG: Hong Kong's richest woman Nina Wang, best known for a sensational legal battle over her missing husband's estate, has died from an illness, her spokesman said Wednesday. She was 69.

Wang's spokesman Ringo Wong said Wang died from an illness Tuesday, but he declined to give specifics.

Hong Kong media had reported earlier that she suffered from ovarian cancer, and that it had spread to her liver and other organs.

Wang made headlines in Hong Kong with her legal fight against her father-in-law over her husband Teddy Wang's estate.

Teddy Wang was kidnapped in 1990 and declared dead nine years later. His body was never found.

A court ruled in 2002 that Teddy Wang's 1990 will was a fake, and that Nina Wang "probably" forged it.

Teddy Wang's father, Wang Din-shin, was named the sole inheritor of his son's fortune by the court. However, Hong Kong's top court reversed that ruling in 2005, and Nina Wang inherited the estate.

The eight-year legal battle captivated the public with colorful and lurid detail. Wang Din-shin had accused his daughter-in-law of adultery.

Forbes magazine this year ranked Nina Wang as the world's No. 204 richest person with a fortune of US$4.2 billion (€3.14 billion).

What a bridge. It connects two towers in a curve. So much steel structure bears it.

Towering monument to a big dreamer
Hong Kong Standard
Thursday, April 05, 2007

Nina Tower in Tsuen Wan symbolizes the enterprising nature of a billionaire who dared to dream big.

The newly opened Nina Tower is a 42-story hotel in Yeung Uk Road. Next door is Teddy Tower, a soon-to-be- completed 88-story hotel and office building dedicated to her missing husband, Teddy Wang, who was declared dead by a court after being kidnapped.

The towers are linked by a sky bridge on the 42nd floor.

The ever-smiling Nina Wang dreamed of building the world's tallest commercial building in Tsuen Wan, but the government frowned on the idea of a 110-story tower, considering flightpaths to the airport as well as height restrictions.

"Had the empire of Teddy Wang been inherited by some other woman, his assets could have been easily transformed into a gigantic closet of clothes and a massive collection of jewelry," people close to Nina Wang have observed.

"It would certainly require someone as tough as Nina to keep what has been left behind by her husband intact and expand it."

Although reports have suggested that Teddy Wang would affectionately call his wife "silly piggie," Nina Wang was a clever but frugal businesswoman who built a real estate empire.

It is hard to miss a tower built by her company, whether in Sha Tin, Central, Wan Chai, Causeway Bay or Tsuen Wan. The hard-working billionaire never took for granted the wealth left behind by her husband - rather, she grew the fortune he left.

She married Teddy Wang on her 19th birthday and helped her husband start a pharmaceutical firm, which later transformed into a chemicals producer before eventually emerging as a real estate giant in Hong Kong.

Last year, she planned to inject inject some assets in Chinachem's portfolio into a real estate investment trust, with the aim of raising capital to finance other projects.

She put her mark on HK's skyline with that building. What other scrapers did her company build?
It seems quite impressive what she did judging by that text in the post above.

BTW what does T/O stand for in the threadtitle?
