Calicut ranked at 6th position of international passenger traffic of october aswell as the period of April - October. (just after DEL,BOM,MAA, BANGLORE AND COK)

But for total passenger traffic we are way far behind because of very little domestic conections.

Corrected. Thanks.

For domestic traffic, calicut airport is the only airport in the country that doesnt have any low cost carriers. Domestic passengers are roughly 10% of the international passengers.

GoK should promote more on Malabar tourism.

Wayanad is a unique place just like backwaters, we need to promote it in Metro cities. this will attract more domestic tourists.

Nowadays people visitng Malabar are using Kochi. it is like fly to Kochi- Drive to Calicut or Wayanad then -drive back to Kochi - drive to Trivandrum and- fly back to home.

If it is like Fly to CCJ- Drive to TVM via Kochi - then Fly back to home tourists can save lot of time and money . But lack of airlines and government support is blocking this.

why are there no low cost airlines flying to calicut...isnt it profitable or lack of demand??
maybe with the coming up of the cyberpark things will improve...

the tender for the new arrival block has been called. so the land acquisition problems are cleared????

Domestic routes are not really profitable from Calicut except MAA & BOM, but as the city is growing rapidly DEL, HYD & BLR can be included to the list. But I dono why no airline is interested.

No idea about aquisition issue

I dont think profitability is the problem. Connectivity to airport is a big problem I believe. Had there a decent bus service from airport to city, people will be encouraged to take flights rather than spending extra money on taxis. Right now most of the domestic passengers take flight to kochi/bangalore/coimbatore and then take bus/train to reach calicut.

Yes Malabar is not yet in the toursim ring that way we are missing a huge business.

Recently my friend from Qatar who hailed from Calicut booked a ticket to Kochi. When I asked the reason he said it is far more cheeper. He was true. when i check the websites of various airlies CCJ rate was little higher than that of Kochi.

And he said there were a bus full of passengers to Kozhikode, Malappuram and Kannur in that plain!!! And people from Kannur said for them Kochi tickets are availabel round the clock where as CCJ would be full bfore few days!. And yes Kannur is just a train ride away from COK! where as from CCJ, they need pathetic taxi/bus ride to reach the nearest railway staion.

Then what is the need to construct a new airport in Kannur???

While this may be true, it isn't so always. Cochin and Tvm flights are occasionally more expensive than Calicut. The last time I flew, Calicut was a couple of hundred AED less than the other 2 cities. But, yes, overall, Calicut is losing out big time. Govt support is one issue. I'm sure, there is serious lobbying going on against which we do not stand a chance without absolutely no support.

The way things are going, I won't be surprised if fares to Kannur airport are cheaper, and Calicut passengers use it.....

Actually there is no Arrival hall in CCJ, it is just a walkway between immigration, duty free and baggage claim.

Do those certifications take into consideration the maintenance of the airport?

Have you guys seen the waiting hall at departure? Have you seen the toilets?
The baggage claim area at arrivals are a total mess. So dirty, that you would never think you're at an airport.

Apparently the certifications looked at immigration processes and procedures only...

I don't think the departure waiting is that much bad. And rather it is better than many other Indian Airports. And baggage claim is always a mess in any airports , And here we have only two working belts , the rush makes the things worse, (Don't forget the Malayalee habit of bringing extra heavy baggage cartons filled with every cheap supermarket items from the 'Gelf') Don't expect a Suvarnabhumi or Changi here.

About the toilets, I agree with you , We Indians don't know anything about a dry and clean toilets. They are really

Lets not compare with other Indian airports. I mean why can't we have an international standard? The waiting area can actually be designed and allocated better. The arrangement looks scattered, and the chairs are dirty. Did you notice the latter? I had taken some pics earlier. I also wonder what kind of maintenance system they have, if they have any in the first place. If the chairs in the waiting area are systematically arranged, you could have a full fledged organized duty free instead of 2 coffee stalls in two ends of the hall, one book stall, and a heritage shop before security check. Bizarre layout!

Regarding baggage claim, I don't mean the pressure on the belts. If you notice next to the toilet, there are baggage thrown over the place, with sand and dust all scattered, like a garbage dumping yard. These are unclaimed baggage. Come to think of it, the conveyor belts themselves are in very bad shape.

We have to start thinking on international lines, because the competition of Cochin and possibly Kannur are private airports, and they will definitely do a much better job than the AAI solely.
