RAK AIRWAYS ANNOUNCES NEW WINTER SCHEDULE TO MEET SURGE IN DEMAND

RAK Airways, a national carrier of the UAE, has increased the frequency of its Calicut flights to meet high passenger demand. Effective October 31st, 2010 the carrier will offer five flights a week to Calicut departing from Ras Al Khaimah International Airport at 1610.

IndiGo seeks approval from govt to launch international flights

Carrier will complete 5 years of operations in August, meeting a key requirement for local airlines to fly overseas

Budget-carrier IndiGo plans to launch international services on 15 routes starting from the middle of next year, according to a proposal it has submitted to the aviation ministry.

IndiGo, with at least 16 Airbus A320 aircraft to augment its fleet of 32 A320s between now and 2011, plans to launch international services in a phased manner from August, the airline said.

The carrier has shortlisted 15 sectors it wants to connect, including Dubai, Bangkok, Singapore, Kathmandu, Jeddah, the Maldives, Abu Dhabi and Sharjah, it said in the draft proposal, which was reviewed by Mint.

It has sought to launch most of its flights from New Delhi and Mumbai, while those to West Asia will be from Kozhikode, Kochi and Thiruvananthapuram , besides between Chennai and Singapore, keeping the flight range of its Airbus 320 in mind.

There is no further info to clarify it But I think if they are included in their schedule ( it has validity up to March 2011) , it means SQ is seriously thinking about CCJ.

Calicut Airport to get a makeover

The Airports Authority of India (AAI) has chalked up proposals to create several new facilities at the Calicut International Airport.

These include a new international arrival hall of 4,200 sq.ft. and a multi-level car parking system, according to Mr M.K. Raghavan, Member of Parliament.

He said in a statement here that he had held discussions with AAI on the development of the airport and the new facilities were proposed in response to his demands.

AAI had pointed out that delay in land acquisition continued to be the major hurdle for the development of the port.

Out of the 378.21 acres needed for airport development, the State Government was able to offer only 137 acres so far.

Mr Raghavan said that tenders would be invited shortly for the construction of the multi-level car parking system and the blueprint for a computerised car-parking facility had been prepared. The approach road to the airport would be developed further.

Besides, there is proposal for modifying the domestic terminal building.

Other facilities

A roof over the international terminal and expansion of the airport's apron are the other facilities that are under the consideration of AAI. The second instrument landing system in the airport will soon become operational.

The AAI officials also informed the MP that the presence of CISF at the airport would be strengthened.

Another proposal is for posting of house surgeons from the Kozhikode Government Medical College at the airport to make up the shortage of doctors on call.

Kozhikode: The Calicut Chamber of Commerce and Industry has demanded another airport for the district on the grounds that the one at Karipur has only limited scope for development, it being a table-top airport with land scarce in the adjacent area for expansion.

At a press meeting here on Monday, the chamber's office-bearers said the development of the Karipur airport had come to a dead-end for various reasons.

T.P. Ahammed Koya, president of the chamber, said the number of passengers had steadily increased at the airport, coming 12th out of 100 airports on this score and 11th in terms of revenue, but its capacities for accommodating flights and providing passenger facilities had reached the limits. “It cannot grow any further in terms of its flight capacity and facility to handle the passengers,” Mr. Koya said.

He said the airport was initially envisioned for 600 passengers daily, but had to deal with 2,000 within a few years of its inauguration. The number of passengers a year rose to 20,11,656 in 2010 from 8,13,200 in 2006. The number of flights too increased in proportion.

With several development projects, including two information technology parks, about to be launched in the district, the airport would soon become insufficient.

“This would make another airport with international status and services indispensable for the district,” Mr. Koya said. T.P. Vasu, secretary , said land for another airport would not be an issue if the authorities showed the will to build one. Money also would not be a problem, as the airport could be built on a private-public partnership.

“We have to see the development requirements of the next generations when we make plans,” he said. The office-bearers said infrastructure development should be done only after considering the development possibilities of the next 40 years.

RAK Airways mulls more Jeddah flights

RAK Airways, the national carrier of Ras Al Khaimah, said it is examining the possibility of boosting its frequency of Jeddah flights to meet high passenger demand - particularly from Kozhikode in the south Indian state of Kerala.

Presently, the airline offers five flights a week to Kozhikode from Ras Al Khaimah International Airport, said a statement from RAK Air.

RAK Airways recently hosted a travel agents delegation representing 17 travel agencies from across Kozhikode as part of its initiative to create awareness about its new visa services package.

The package starting from Dh1200 ($326.7) includes a visitor visa and return airfare for passengers flying into the emirate fom India, it added.

Later the team met RAK Airways CEO, Omar Jahameh and highlighted the market demand for additional flights to Jeddah due to a surge in traffic between Kozhikode and Saudi Arabia’s business hub.

Jahameh said RAK Airways had seen a steady increase in demand for passengers wanting to fly between Kozhikode and Jeddah.

'We currently operate four flights a week to Jeddah however we are looking to increase our service on this busy route so our Keralite passengers traveling to Saudi Arabia on either business or for Umrah and Haj can take advantage of more frequent, convenient connections,' he added

SriLankan Airlines today said it would recommence operations from Kochi by operating daily flights from Mar 27 and was also looking to resume services to Kozhikode and Hyderabad by the end of this year or early next year, a top official of the airline said.

With the resumption of flights to Kochi and addition of seven frequencies, the toal number of flights to India will increase to 63 per week, Mr Mohamed Fazeel, Head Worldwide – Sales, SriLankan Airlines said here.

Qatar Airways Cargo has announced an expansion of its dedicated freighter routes with new services to Hanoi, Kozhikode and Bengaluru. Freighter operations to Kozhikode and onto Bengaluru are served with an Airbus A300 freighter on the route boosting Qatar Airways Cargo freighter capacity in India by an additional 40 metric tonnes a week.

In India, Qatar Airways currently operates passenger and cargo flights to 12 cities. The additional freighter service to Kozhikode and Bengaluru will complement existing cargo operations to Kolkata, the West Bengali city that will also become a passenger route when Qatar Airways commences daily flights on July 27. Cargo payloads include a multitude of goods ranging from medical and pharmaceutical supplies to vegetables and personal effects.

Qatar Airways Chief Executive Officer Akbar Al Baker said that the new freighter services presented an opportunity to grow business in Vietnam and also bring welcomed extra capacity to the airline's cargo operations in India.

"In India, we've seen a big upward trend in cargo movements. By coupling Kozhikode with Bengaluru on this new cargo route from Doha, we ensure that we are utilising the available space onboard our freighter to the maximum.
