A lot of Opera Houses have row upon row of horseshoe shaped boxes of seats stack up at the sides
and back of their auditoriums. What folks don't realize is that these make for poor sight lines for watching the performance. The orchestra level seats are generally the best in the house in these venues. But good sight lines are often found in opera houses that were former theatres (common in the USA) unrelated to Opera. The 1922 built Capitol Theatre, now the Detroit Opera House has a large balcony crossing over the auditorium. This allows for much better viewing and sound, than if there were row after row of Opera boxes at the back of the auditorium. One reason for this is that many of these venues were built for Vaudeville... where a distance of 100 ft. or less is required for at least some intimacy with the stage act. And the first few rows in the front of the balcony in this type of theatre is usually among the most desirable (and therefore costliest) seating in the house.
