AURA's isn't as bad as some people say. It looks great from my balcony and has good proportions.

Do you mean that there have been criticisms from Toronto...ians (?) regarding this tower?

Home owners 5 km away complained that they could see the building while barbecuing on their decks. Tall buildings need to apologize for existing apparently. Even among skyscraper enthusiasts the reaction had been about 75% negative. Opinions are getting more positive as it nears completion. This part of town needed a muscular looking building with considerable height and AURA delivered on both fronts. The upper portion of the tower is magnificent and shimmers at dawn and dusk.

That said, they got a few things wrong. The below grade retail mall is an absolute disaster and owners are realizing that they're going to go bankrupt. I feel sorry for them. The spandrel on the lower portion of the tower was a big disappointment as well. This is a building with a $23 million pent house unit and the renderings promised a facade of far higher quality.

Overall AURA is a good addition to our skyline imo. The underground mall can be re-done and 20-30 years down the road the spandrel on the lower portion of the tower can be replaced with something more attractive and of higher quality.

What's more confusing are people who move to places like downtown Toronto or Manhattan then complain about tall buildings. Believe it or not, you can't build anything behind Toronto City Hall that can be seen from the square because apparently the only acceptable vista is sky. The city is supposed to hide behind it so we can pretend it doesn't exist. It's the most idiotic thing I've ever heard, but official city policy.

A condo that went up north of City Hall got chopped so we can't see it from the square.

I also don't understand the hate this building gets. I've been sort of passively following this tower for a while and it's turned out better than I thought. Honestly the most offensive thing about this to me is just the ostentatious name.

If AURA rubs you the wrong way, how about 'Eau de Soleil', 'Milan', of my absolute favourite, 'London on the Esplanade'? I went into the show room and asked if it comes with creaky floor boards and no water pressure just like in London. Putting the word 'London' in the name of a condo isn't a selling point imo. What's next 'Gaza Gardens'?

Yeah those are pretty bad, especially the ones that reference other cities. "Aura" doesn't seem that bad compared to those. Jakarta takes the cake for bad building names, though (I'm looking at you,"Goldmember").

I've noticed more and more of Toronto's new constructions are just using their street address, which I suppose is an improvement, but maybe a little dry. Personally I think names that give a nod to the history or function of a building are best (e.g. Chrylser Building, Toronto Dominion Centre, etc.) though not every random condo can have that.

I think 'Beyond the Sea' is the worst one in Toronto. It's hardly the sea, it's Lake Ontario.

Goldmember? Someone's been watching too much Austin Powers. Beyond the Sea is bad as well. Do condos really need names though? Landmark office buildings I can understand, but a street address is fine with me.

I guess names make them more recognizable and marketable. If there are ten developments on Yonge Street and they're named 428 Yonge, 482 Yonge, 488 Yonge etc. it can get confusing.

Goes to show what a huge difference placement makes. If AURA had gone up in the CBD it wouldn't have had the dramatic effect on the skyline that we see now.
