CHENNAI: JK Tyre & Industries Limited, an industry leader and manufacturer of well known brands JK Tyre, Vikrant and Tornel, on Monday announced the substantial expansion of its operations in Karnataka.

In this connection, Arun Bajoria, President, JK Tyre, met with a team of senior officials of Government of Karnataka led by VP Baligar, Principal Secretary (Industries), recently in Delhi.

It is understood that the Government of Karnataka had assured special incentives to the company for their forthcoming investments.

As part of company’s growth strategy of expanding its capacity and strengthening R&D, JK Tyre would invest in the state to manufacture truck, bus and car radials to cater to both domestic and international markets.

Announcing the expansion plans, Arun Bajoria said, “There is an increase in demand for commercial vehicles as well as for passenger cars in the country. We had announced last year to undertake substantial expansion of our tyre operation and therefore our new plant in Karnataka is part of our long term growth strategy.” “Our all new green field plant will by far be a state-of-the-art tyre plant in the country. It will also provide substantial employment to the youths of the state,” he added.

NEW DELHI: JK Tyre today said it will invest Rs 1,200 crore in the next three-four years for capacity addition which includes setting up a new
plant in Karnataka with an investment of Rs 800 crore.

"JK Tyre has recently completed a Rs 315-crore expansion project to increase truck and bus radial tyre capacity from four lakh to eight lakh tyres per annum and is also planning to invest Rs 1,200 crore in the next three to four years to fulfill the demand for quality tyres," a statement quoting JK Tyre & Industries president Arun Bajoria said today.

As part of company's growth strategy, JK Tyre will invest in Karnataka to manufacture truck, bus and car radials to cater to both domestic and international markets and has earmarked an investment of Rs 800 crore for that, it added.

"We had announced last year to undertake substantial expansion of our tyre operations, therefore our new plant in Karnataka is part of our long-term growth strategy," Bajoria said in the statement.

Precision moves for engineers

A PRECISION engineering company is expanding into markets worldwide - with the opening of new factories in the USA and India.

VTL Group, which supplies components for the automotive and Industrial sectors has two sites in St Thomas Road, Huddersfield and one site at Luddenden Foot in Halifax, has just commissioned a new production facility in Charleston, South Carolina, to serve its American customers.

The 20,000sq ft US facility, part of VTL's Precision business, began operations last November and was officially opened last month by the Mayor of Charleston. It now employs about 35 staff which will increase to 70 by the end of 2009.

VTL is also in the early stages of developing another factory at Dharwad, Karnataka, southern India, to manufacture items such as automotive transmission components and precision machined industrial components for clients in the Far East and in Europe.

To this end VTL acquired a five-acre site in, where it is currently building a 35,000sq ft factory to begin operations in July, 2009, as Uni-VTL Engineering PVT Ltd. The site will have enough space for a further 35,000sq ft production unit to be added when needed.

VTL Group was formed in November, 2001, by joint owners David Clegg, Chris Elliott and Bruno Jouan when they completed a management buy-out of French-owned Valeo Transmissions Ltd in Halifax.

The business expanded with the 2006 acquisition of precision engineering firm Taylor & Whiteley Ltd - which now provides the TWL name.

JK Tyre launch truck and bus radial plant in Karnataka

Mysore, Oct 30 : J K Tyre and Industries limited, leader and manufacturer of brands like J K Tyre, Vikrant and Tornel, formally inaugurated India's first truck and bus radial tyre plant here today.

With this expansion of its radial capacity in its city's plant JK Tyres had stepped up its capacity from four lakh to eight lakh.

Speaking on the occasion H S Singhania, Chairman, said the company started manufacturing tyres in 1977, with a capacity of five lakhs tyres per year and has grown multifold over the years to its present capacity of 158 lakhs per year, which includes Tornel, a leading tyre manufacturer in Maxico.

JK Tyre now has four plants strategically located in the country, in the states of Rajasthan, Madhya, Pradesh, and Karnataka and three around Mexico city.

He stated that in Mysore J K Tyre had an investment
of Rs 1100 crore including the recently completed expansion. In addition, a major expansion of OTR capacity in the city involving an outlay of Rs 120 crore was under implementation and shall be completed in early 2010.

The company was fast expanding capacity across its manufacturing facilities to cater to the rising demand and drive growth. It had recently completed expansion by investing Rs 315 crore to increase its capacity to truck and bus radial tyres from four lakhs to eight lakhs per year and was planning to invest a further Rs 1200 crore in the next three to four years to fulfill the growth demand, he added.

Vice Chairman and Managing Director R P Singhania, said JK tyres had seven modern tyre production facilities globally, with a turnover close to one billion U S Dollars.

The state-of-the-art bus manufacturing facility of Tata Marcopolo Motors Ltd. at Dharwad in Karnataka has begun commercial production. Tata Marcopolo Motors is a 51:49 joint venture of Tata Motors and Marcopolo of Brazil.

The Dharwad plant will cater to India’s growing demand for world class fully-built buses for intra-city and inter-city transportation with international standard comfort, quality and safety. It will produce a comprehensive range of buses to be marketed under the ‘Starbus’ and ‘Globus’ brands, including 16 to 54-seater standard buses, 18 and 45-seater luxury buses, luxury coaches and low-floor city buses.

Spread over about 123 acres, the plant will have a capacity to produce 30,000 units a year, to be achieved in phases. In 2009-10, the first full year of operation, production can be up to 15,000 units. The joint venture has already invested about Rs. 200 crores. The plant, at full capacity, will generate over 6,500 direct jobs. It will be supported by a vendor park.

In May 2006, Tata Motors and Marcopolo announced a joint venture company in India to manufacture and assemble fully-built buses and coaches. The joint venture, in which Tata Motors will hold 51 per cent of the equity and Marcopolo will hold 49 per cent, initially set up a manufacturing facility in Lucknow from where the DTC low-floor city bus order was executed.

The joint venture is good combination with Tata Motors providing technology and expertise in chassis and aggregates, and Marcopolo providing the expertise and know-how in processes and systems for bodybuilding and bus body design. The buses built so far conform to international standards in quality and safety, and the plan is to market the products not only in India but also in all Tata Motors focused markets globally.

At the time of signing the agreement in 2006, the Chairman of Tata Motors, Mr. Ratan N. Tata said: “The rapidly expanding and improving road network, connecting cities and also rural areas, is expected to substantially grow passenger transport. The joint venture with Marcopolo, which is one of the largest bus body builders, will enable Tata Motors to successfully address the growing demand in India, as well as relevant markets abroad”.

Tata Motors has already executed the first order from DTC for 655 low-floor city buses. Market reports indicate that the company has bagged the second tender for 1,625 buses which is already under production. The company is also working with many other State and city transport corporations, including BMTC in Bangalore, for which the company has recently supplied 2 low-floor city buses.
The Dharwad plant, considered the largest bus manufacturing plant in the world, will strengthen Tata Motors’ presence in the bus market.

Mumbai: Japanese carmaker Toyota Motor Corp is in the process of identifying vendors in India as it prepares to enter the mass market segment by early 2011 with its completely new small car platform. The company is looking at a localisation level of 70% at the start of production level in small car.

Indicating that it will be importing the engine for the small car, Hiroshi Nakagawa, managing director, Toyota Kirloskar Motor (TKM), said: "We are looking at sourcing as much as we can from India and are studying the possibility of setting up an engine facility at the second plant near Bangalore." Nakagawa was speaking on the sidelines of a function to launch the New Land Cruiser here. He said that the focus was to make a vehicle that competes with the Hyundais and Maruti Suzukis in the small car segment. The company was also exploring the possibility of setting up a research and developments (R&D) centre in India.

The small car platform is a brand new platform, keeping in focus the Indian market. The R&D for the said platform has been done in Japan, while the manufacturing will be done in India. The platform is expected to roll out a Hatchback and a Sedan. “The second plant in Bangalore will be the mother plant for the small car and the global launch of the small car will be done from here in early 2011,” said Sandeep Singh, deputy managing director, marketing, Toyota Kirloskar Motor. He said that the focus was on the Indian market while exports would follow later. The new plant near Bangalore was expected to be ready for production by end of this year and would have an initial capacity of 70,000 units per annum. An investment of around Rs 3,000 crore was being made in the second plant. "The second plant will focus only on the volume car segment (small car), while the current plant, with a capacity of 65,000 units per annum, will look at producing Corolla, Innova and Fortuner," said Singh.

The company will be launching sports utility vehicle (SUV), Fortuner, in September this year. "The car will be assembled in India and will have localisation of 25% to start with," he added. The company is looking at selling 400 units of the Fortuner per month. The SUV will be priced at around Rs 20 lakh.

Toyota, which plans to launch its first small car in India by end-2010, just got a gift from the State of Karnataka, which has granted an exemption to the Japanese car manufacturer from paying entry tax on equipment brought into the State over the next three years.

Not having to pay the 2% entry tax and cess will mean a savings of around Rs 80 crore for Toyota. Now, as part of its ongoing expansion activity in India, the company will set up a new assembly line for its small car at an investment of about Rs 3,200 crore. Starting next year, Toyota aims to produce 70,000 units of its compact car in India every year.

Toyota’s compact car is expected to compete against the likes of the Hyundai i20, Fiat Grande Punto, Honda Jazz and Skoda Fabia and will be priced at more than Rs six lakh. According to some reports in the media, the Toyota will start production of its small car with 65% local content, which will be increased over a period of time.

Automotive major Toyota Motor Corporation (Toyota City, Japan) recently announced that it is considering the construction of an engine and transmission production plant in India so the company can use locally manufactured vehicle parts rather than imported ones. Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, TX) reports that such a step would make the company's products more competitive.

Toyota runs its Indian operations through Toyota Kirloskar Motor Private Limited (TKM) (Bangalore, Karnataka), which is the 89:11 joint venture company that Toyota has formed with the Kirloskar Group (Pune, Maharashtra, India). According to Hiroshi Nakagawa, managing director of TKM, the company hopes to increase the localization levels from the existing 50 percent. He added that depending on local demands, the company would decide whether it would manufacture diesel or petrol engines, or both.

TKM currently imports both types of engines for its luxury sedan Corolla and multi-purpose vehicle Innova from its facilities in Japan and Thailand. If finalized, the company will set up the new facility at its upcoming second factory at Bidadi, on the outskirts of Bangalore in Karnataka. The complex at Bidadi is spread over a land area of 430 acres.

The venture is preparing to launch a small car in the Indian automotive market by 2011, and the second facility at Bidadi is being developed for that purpose. The second facility will have an initial production capacity of 70,000 units per year and is being set up with an investment of about $690 million. The capacity of the facility may be increased to 200,000 units if demand requires expansion. The facility is expected to be ready by 2010. The existing facility of TKM has a production capacity of 80,000 units per year. The company reportedly will invest about $172 million in the first facility during 2011-16.

TKM's small car is codenamed 800L and the company expects the model to play a significant role in the Indian automotive market in spite of the stiff competition it will have to face from Hyundai Motor Company (Seoul, South Korea), Maruti Suzuki India Limited (New Delhi, India), and Tata Motors Limited (Mumbai, India), which are companies that are already established in the small-car sector. Nearly 70 percent of India's car business is accounted for by the small-car segment.

Automotive majors Volkswagen AG (Wolfsburg, Germany), Honda Motor Company Limited (Tokyo, Japan), General Motors Company (Detroit, MI), and Ford Motor Company (Dearborn, MI) are all planning to launch small cars in India. Ford has announced that it plans to introduce a new small car in India every 12 to 15 months over the five years following the launch of the Ford Figo in 2010. The company intends to set up a global manufacturing hub for small cars in India and ensure its place in the small-car segment that Ford predicts will constitute 60 percent of all car sales worldwide during the next 10 years. In September 2009, Ford signed a memorandum of understanding with the state government of Tamil Nadu, whereby Ford will double the capacity of its production unit near Chennai and set up a new integrated engine plant.

Maruti, India's largest car manufacturing company, has announced plans to increase its production capacity by 200,000 units during the next two financial years. It has finalized plans to invest almost $2 billion on a research and development center and a new engine plant. Thus, Toyota will be facing tough competition as it sets about implementing its plans in India

Mumbai: JMT Auto Ltd has informed BSE that the Company and M/s. TIMKEN INDIA MANUFACTURING PVT LTD has signed and entered into a new Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on certain terms and conditions on February 21, 2008 for expansion of their existing project at DHARWAD, KARNATAKA specially set up for M/s. TIMKEN INDIA MANUFACTURING PVT LTD and also for investing of backward integration.

JMT Auto Ltd., formerly known as Jamshedpur Metal Treat (JMT), is one of the leading Auto component manufacturers in Eastern region.

JMT Auto Ltd has also informed that the Company has bagged order from giant Auto and Engineering Companies like VOLVO (Sweden) for high Precision Pins, EATON (USA) for Gears, Shafts, Hydraulic Pump Shafts. Company expects its business with international OEMS to increase by 200 % by 2007 - 08 and 100% in year 2008 - 09.

The company identified Transmission Components as it's key business area and acquired core competency in manufacturing products like Transmission Gears, Engine Gears, Gear Box Assembly, Carrier Assembly, Shafts, Rear Axle Shafts, Synchro Rings, Seal were Rings, Synchronising Cone, Fly wheels, Drums, Housing Pipes, Spindles and Pins.

Later on, based on specific market/customer needs, the company also started producing Sheet Metal Parts, Rocker Lever Assembly, Bushes, fabrications & other automotive components.

Karnataka may be the home for second Nano plant

Karnataka may have narrowly lost the race for housing Tata Motors’ Nano car plant but that is not stopping the southern state from nursing ambitions of winning the second round of the same race. It was late last year when Tata Motors announced that it would set up the first plant for producing the Rs 1-lakh car at Gujarat’s Sanand rather than Karnataka’s Dharwad, among other places.

Now, if all goes well, Karnataka will get a chance to play host to Tata Motors' proposed second Nano car plant in South India. The state government has been assured by the company that Dharwad will be a preferred choice for the company's plans to expand its Nano manufacturing capacity into South India.

The state government, in turn, has assured the company that it will provide the required land as well as tax concessions, similar to those offered by the Gujarat government, for setting up the second Nano car plant, Karnataka minister for medium and large industries Murugesh R Nirani said.

"When Tata Motors initially came to inspect Dharwad, we had offered them 600 acres within 24 hours and had assured another 400 acres in three months. But the company chose to go to Gujarat for reasons best known to them. However, they have told us, for expansion of their Nano car capacity, they will consider Dharwad and we have promised them all possible help," he told Business Standard.

Nirani added the state government recently acquired 2,500 acres at Dharwad, adjacent to the existing Tata Motors' bus plant, where the company had intended to set up the Nano plant. Tata Motors had indicated a requirement of around 1,000 acres.

"We have already discussed this with the company's higher officials. They have plans to set up one more plant in South India for producing the Nano car and they want to do it in Dharwad because it is closer to Pune, where they have a major presence. Tata Group Chairman Ratan Tata has invited us for further talks in this regard and we will soon meet him," Nirani said.

Tata is currently manufacturing the Nano at their plant in Pantnagar. Its dedicated Nano car plant will be operational at Sanand in Gujarat by early 2010.

At Dharwad, Tata Motors currently operates two plants to manufacture construction equipment under the Telcon brand name. It also produces buses in a joint venture with Brazil's Marcopolo. So far, it has acquired 600 acres and employs around 3,500 workers in both the plants. The company has invested close to Rs 500 crore in its bus plant, which started commercial production in January this year.

In addition to Tata's Nano car plant, the state government is also in talks with Korea's car maker Hyundai Motors and the domestic utility vehicle major, Mahindra and Mahindra, for locating their new plants in Karnataka.

Recently, the state government approved an additional investment proposal of Rs 800 crore by Toyota Kirloskar Motors at Bidadi, near Bangalore. The government is also planning to hold a special meeting with the automobile industry very soon in Bangalore, as a precursor to its forthcoming global investors' meet scheduled to be held in January 2010, Nirani added.

Falcon Tyres to raise Rs 300 cr; board decides to split stock

Falcon Tyres Ltd is raising Rs 300 crore to carry out expansion of its tyre manufacturing capacity at Mysore plant this year. The company plans to raise Rs 200 crore debt and another Rs 100 crore by divesting a percentage of stake to a private equity firm.

Announcing this at a press conference, here today, Pawan Kumar Ruia, Chairman, Ruia Group, which owns Falcon Tyres, said, “We are expanding our capacity at Mysore plant from the existing 7.5 lakh tyres per annum to 1.4 million tyres per annum by March next year and to fund this we are raising Rs 300 crore by way of debt and equity. We have already got a loan of Rs 100 crore sanctioned by Central Bank and we are yet to initiate talks with any PE fund for the remaining Rs 100 crore. Another Rs 100 crore will be raised through the debt.”

The company, currently has a debt of Rs 120 crore, of which Rs 78 crore is term loan. The board of directors of Falcon Tyres, which met here today also decided to split the shares of Rs 10 into two shares of Rs 5 each. The board also decided to issue bonus shares in the ratio of two shares for one share held. The company’s annual general meeting is convened in September this year to take the shareholders’ approval for the same, he said.

The company, currently has an outstanding shares of 56,80,000 shares.

“We are getting huge demand for our tyres from both the Original Equipment Makers (OEMs) and export markets. We are unable to meet the demand from our current capacities, so we have planned to increase the capacity at Mysore plant to 1.4 million tyres. Once the expansion is completed, one third of the capacity each will be sold to OEMs, replacement market and export markets,” Ruia said.

He said the company is also looking at outsourcing opportunities to meet the demand and supply gap. It is currently in talks with local tyre manufacturers for supply of around 500,000 tyres, he said.

Bangalore: Bosch Automotive Electronics India Private Limited (RBAI), a 100% subsidiary of the Bosch Group, inaugurated its manufacturing plant at Naganathapura, Bangalore. The company will manufacture Electronic Control Units (ECU) for diesel and gasoline fuel injection systems in India Bosch has invested over Rs. 60 crores in this facility during 2008 and 2009 and plans an additional investment of Rs. 68 crores by 2010.

Present at the inauguration were Dr. Bernd Bohr, Chairman, Automotive Group & Member, Board of Management, Robert Bosch GmbH, Germany; Dr. Volkmar Denner, Member, Board of Management, Robert Bosch GmbH and Mr. V K Viswanathan, Managing Director, Bosch Limited.

Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Bernd Bohr, Chairman, Automotive Group, Robert Bosch GmbH, Germany, said, “Bosch India is an important constituent of the worldwide Bosch family. We have made substantial investments for various expansion projects and new product introductions. This new facility of ECU is another significant step in that direction.”

In the gasoline segment, latest Bosch technology is in use in the Tata’s Nano. Another Bosch innovation, the Start-Stop system, which can save fuel consumption of 8-12%, is already in use in Mahindra’s Scorpio and Bolero models. The next in the offering is the Anti-lock Braking System, which will be manufactured in India from this year.

Electronic control units from Bosch integrate all required functions of modern engine control in a single unit. Main components of the ECU are microcontroller with software applications and power stages. Functions are integrated in a compact chip set which controls the fuel injection and ignition for motor vehicles. The software for the ECU was specifically developed for the requirements of emerging markets. The first batch of ECUs produced at Naganathapura will be supplied for Tata’s Nano model.

Over the past few years, Bosch has been introducing its innovative products to the Indian market as part of its increased commitment to India. The company has already introduced the Common Rail Injection System for Diesel vehicles, which has revolutionized the Indian diesel car and SUV market. In near future, the Common Rail System will also be available in the Commercial Vehicle segment in India.

Bangalore: Robert Bosch Engineering and Business Solutions Ltd (RBEI), the engineering and IT services subsidiary of Bosch in India, has launched the first-of-its- kind Reliability Testing Centre that will help enhance the reliability of automotive components like Electronic Control Units (ECU), in any environmental conditions.

Set up at an investment of Rs 8 crore, the centre is expected to have around 25 engineers. The new lab is located next to the Electronic Control Unit production facility of Bosch at Naganathapura, Bangalore.

"This test centre is filling up the last gap in our local product development processes. With the availability of this facility we are now able to develop products for our customers right from the concept stage to the delivery stage, completely localized in India" said Mr. Friedhelm Pickhard, Managing Director, Robert Bosch Engineering and Business Solutions Ltd.

The company will also invest Rs. 170 crore (40 crore in 2010 & 130 crore on setting up the center) on it's new facility in Coimbatore, which will employ 2,500 engineers by the end of 2010.

The content and complexity of electronics in cars have continuously increased in the past 50 years. In automotive electronics, an Electronic Control Unit (ECU) is an embedded system that controls one or more of the electrical systems or subsystems in a motorized vehicle. Some modern cars have up to 80 ECUs, including Engine Management ECUs, Transmission Control Units, Airbag Control Units, electronically driven Window Lifter, etc.

While the international standards are mainly based on experiences from European, American and Japanese markets, special Indian conditions need to be addressed additionally.

This will be achieved by gathering information on ECUs and the environment they are exposed to. For this purpose data on ECUs’ heat dissipation during operation, profiles for various thermal, vibration and spray/corrosion tests are collected. Based on this information, tests are adapted to local conditions and are performed in the RBEI reliability lab. Afterwards detailed analysis of the ECUs is performed to ensure that there is no weak point in the design of the automotive component.

"For this reason the RBEI test lab has been set up with the best technology available. Combined with the knowledge of our engineers, RBEI ensures the world leading quality of Bosch automotive components," said Dr. Detlef Zerfowski, Department Head of the RBEI reliability lab.

Based on the needs of the local emerging markets, the reliability engineers will use their technical knowledge for adapting and extending the tests to be performed. With the local domain expertise RBEI will influence the recent standards to cover the local applications for 2- and 3-wheeler, as well as passenger cars and commercial vehicles with respect to the local conditions (like climate, usage of vehicles and different road conditions) in a more suitable manner.

The tests conducted at RBEI, adhere to AEC Q100, IEC 60068, ISO 16750, SAE J1879, J2334, VDA Volume 3 etc., which define a subset of requirements and tests to ensure the reliability of automotive components.

Bangalore, Aug 13: Toyota Kirloskar Motors, the Indian subsidiary of Japanese auto giant Toyota, would allow seven component makers including global player Asahi Glass to house their assembly units at its upcoming compact car plant in India.

The on-site components producers at Toyota's premises will supply components for the compact cars to be rolled out by Toyota starting from 2010 at its second plant, a top official attached to TKM said. Toyota is constructing its second production plant with an investment of Rs 1,400 crore to manufacture compact cars at its existing premises in Bidadi near Bangalore. Initially the production capacity of the second plant will be at one lakh units and later the capacity would be increased up to two lakh vehicles per annum.

Allowing component manufacturers to set up in-house plants would enable the car producer to get specially designed components at competitive price while getting original equipment (OE) fitments on the spot, the official requesting anonymity added. He said the company has identified component giants like Jai Bharat Maruti (JBM), Stanzen Toyotetsu India Pvt Ltd, Wheels India Ltd of TVS Group, Asahi Glass, Bundy India, Tata Johnson Controls Automotive Ltd and Supreme Greaves as on-site suppliers.

Ashai Glass has 14 glass manufacturing plants in five locations across the country with three units exclusively for auto glass. The unit to be set up in Toyota would be the fourth one for auto glass, said Sanjay Labroo, managing director and chief executive officer of Asahi India Glass, the 50:50 joint venture of Asahi Glass of Japan and the Labroo family. Already Asahi has supplied glasses to Toyota's phased out model Qualis and now is supplying to Toyota's other models like Innova and Corolla, he added. Asahi's unit in Toyota's compact car plant would be ready in the next 6-8 months, Labroo added. According to Toyota official, these seven on-site component suppliers will cater to the main requirements of the compact car including press parts, seating, wheels, glasses, decorative interiors and section of break units.
