ThaiPR 17/01/2010

Siam Piwat Company Limited, the owner of Siam Center and Siam Discovery, reveals a major renovation of Siam Discovery. Giving renewed vigor to its exceptional mix of new discoveries and true to its rank as “The Ultimate Lifestyle & Entertainment Shopping Complex,” Siam Discovery welcomes the world’s leading visitor attractions operator Merlin Entertainments to open “Madame Tussauds Bangkok”, the first of the famous and iconic wax figure tourist attractions in Southeast Asia. Merlin Entertainments is expected to make a total investment of over Baht 500 million (US$15m) on the 3,000 square meter attraction. Adding to the mix of new anchor tenants are “Ice Planet”, the state-of the-art ice-skating facility worth over Baht 180 million and a 1,500 square meter premium multi-purpose exhibition hall worth over Baht 50 million. In warming its welcome to these 3 new magnets, Siam Piwat is devoting another Baht 300 million to make over both inside and out, including in particular a façade destined to be an architectural landmark of Bangkok and introducing Thailand to its first application of ETFE, an advanced engineering phenomenon in construction materials. Renovation works is scheduled to start in March and is due for completion by October 2010.

Mrs. Chadatip Chutrakul, CEO of Siam Piwat reveals : “Siam Discovery was the first and the original lifestyle shopping & entertainment complex in Thailand. When it opened in 1997, the shopping complex offered a fresh mix of retail and services unrivalled with other shopping centers, encompassing a variety of exceptionally cutting-edge and unique brands both Thai and international which were not offered in the other shopping centers. Siam Discovery indulged the new generation of sophisticated urbanites with a strong streak of individuality and right from the start, Siam Discovery has always maintained its positioning as one of Bangkok’s most popular shopping destinations for locals and tourists alike.”

“Siam Discovery’s policy has always aimed to offer its customers the latest global trends and introduce them to new remarkable discoveries, whether in retail, lifestyle or entertainment. The Company therefore has been planning since the beginning of 2009 to give Siam Discovery a major renovation in order to be completed when the global economy is showing positive signs. Our plan includes not only the exterior façade and interior but also the signing of 3 new anchor tenants on floors 6-8 of Siam Discovery. The 3 World Class Magnets cover a total floor area of more than 8,000 square meters, establishing itself as a world-class entertainment destination,” added Mrs. Chadatip.

1. Madame Tussauds Bangkok, the original famous wax works tourist attraction debut in Southeast Asia

Merlin Entertainments, the world’s second largest visitor attraction operator, is investing Baht 500-million (US$15m) to create “Madame Tussauds Bangkok” on the 6th – 7th floors of Siam Discovery, covering an area over 3,000 sq.m. This will be the tenth Madame Tussauds in the world and the third in Asia, after Shanghai and Hong Kong. The ultimate celebrity experience and unlike any other tourist attraction with its amazingly lifelike wax figures displayed in a highly entertaining interactive style, Madame Tussauds Bangkok is expected to be the hottest new place to visit in the City. Most importantly, with no bars, ropes or barriers around the figures visitors will really feel like they are standing beside, or being photographed with their heroes.

The accent at “Madame Tussauds Bangkok” is on contemporary elegance, fun and inter-active entertainment for every visitor. At any given time it will house over 70 wax figures of international celebrities, from HRH Queen Elizabeth II, Barack Obama and Beyonce Knowles, along with such famous Thai figures such as Pancake - Khemanit Jamikorn and Sombat Metanee Building will start in March and Madame Tussauds Bangkok is expected to open in September 2010.

Mrs. Chadatip says : “We are absolutely thrilled to have been selected by a multi-national company such as Merlin Entertainments for this very considerable foreign investment which will bring over Baht 500 million to Thailand. The venture will also enable more Thais to find employment with real prospects, and significantly contribute to the country’s economic growth and tourism development. Not least, it will help ease liquidity in the Thai economy and reinforce the strength of Bangkok as a tourist destination and as well as the confidence in our country among foreign investors.”

Merlin Entertainments Midway Managing Director Glenn Earlam said: “We are delighted to be opening a Madame Tussauds in Bangkok which is such an exciting and vibrant location which gives us so much scope to create what I believe will be one of our best attractions ever. It will be a unique place, in a unique City.’

3. Multi-Purpose Hall: the exclusive, premium venue in the heart of Bangkok

Another high-impact feature of the renovation of Siam Discovery is the Baht 50 million multi-purpose exhibition hall by Siam Piwat’s own investment covering a floor space of 1,500 square meters on floor 7th which will be managed by Royal Paragon Enterprise Company Limited.

Mr. Arun Teng, General Manager of Royal Paragon Enterprise Company Limited, explains: “The new Multi-purpose Hall aims to fill a gap in downtown Bangkok MICE facilities while also offering a different kind of venue for various functions. Event organizers are always looking for new spaces with fresh concepts and that’s where this Multi-purpose Hall comes in. Our target is organizers seeking to stage events with a unique style, combined with just the right amount of space, excellent functionality, design and all at a prime central location with excellent transportation links.”

“The design of the hall is sleek and stylish with a grand foyer and large windows accented by anelement of natural light during the day and stunning city views by night. The facility also features an outdoor terrace, allowing the venue to cater for events indoor and outdoor simultaneously.”
“Our prime targets are mostly organizers of lifestyle events such as fashion shows, art exhibitions, premium product launches, press conferences, international seminars & conferences, exclusive concerts and meet-and-greet activities with local and international artists.”

“From the success of Royal Paragon Hall, Siam Discovery’s Multi-purpose Hall will be managed and operated by the same team whose experience and growth continues to prosper to new heights. The new exhibition facility on 6A at Siam Discovery will be positioned as an exclusive venue and is expected to be ready for service in October 2010.”

Besides the thrill of three such promising new world-class anchor tenants, Siam Discovery is also adding to its star-studded retail mix in the manner of business as usual. Raising the share of F&B outlets to 20% to cater to the needs of the expected surge of heavy traffic of tourists and family target groups, Siam Discovery will be welcoming the first free-standing Marc by Marc Jacobs in Bangkok, the one and only flagship store. And last but not least, Loft the speciality store from Japan too is announcing an expansion plan and revealing a new total floor area of 2,000 square meters. The new Loft store is set to occupy floors 4 & 5 of Siam Discovery.

“Rediscovering” Siam Discovery as the new landmark on Bangkok’s ultimate shopping street.

Siam Piwat will be spending as much as Baht 300 million on the changes and decoration of the interior and the new façade feature, designs of which will be developed to strengthen Siam Discovery’s refreshed positioning and that of the new world-class anchor magnet. The 6th – 8th floors of Siam Discovery, measuring 8,000 square meters, will be revamped under the personal supervision of Mr. Duangrit Bunnag, Managing Director of Duangrit Boonnag Architects Limited.

At street level, the shopping center will be featuring a magnificent 8-floor installation of Thailand’s first ETFE-clad façade designed by Design 103 International Company Limited. ETFE is a material originally developed for use in the space industry by a German company “Vector Foiltec.” The plastic-like material does not degrade under Ultra-Violet light or atmospheric pollution, and at the same time, is anti-adhesive which means that it is self-cleaning under the action of rain. Architecturally, the material is outstanding for being unusually light-weight and has the exceptional light transmission properties, allowing designers to optimize the aesthetic and environmental performance of the building, creating structures of unusual lightness and elegance.

Leading architects and engineers around the world have adopted ETFE as the choice for high profile mega projects ranging from the Olympic venue Beijing Water Cube to public spaces such as the Alliance Arena in Munich, Germany, to the BMW Welt. As the first application of ETFE in Thailand, Design 103’s piece is a sophisticated abstract of adjoining prism shapes equipped with a changing LED lighting embedded each structure enabling the structure to shift into a glowing wondrous landmark at night. With this new modern take to the façade, Siam Discovery is declaring itself as the new and brilliant Landmark of Bangkok in the heart of Thailand’s ultimate shopping destination.

Siam Discovery targets worldwide tourists and expands its customer base among Thai families

With its powerful combination of world class attractions, flagship stores and complete range of services, Siam Discovery is confident that it will be able to attract shoppers of all demographics and increase its customer base, particularly international tourists seeking to experience the celebrity of Madame Tussauds Bangkok, A-B family consumers seeking fashion and lifestyle brands, and youngsters seeking a fun time on ice.

Once the physical renovation is completed and the leasing plan materializes as planned, Siam Discovery is expecting a rise in footfall through the Shopping Complex by 20,000 or a 25% increase, comprised of 60% Thais and 40% foreign customers.

“This Grand renovation of Siam Discovery due to be completed in October 2010, will endorse Siam Discovery as the ultimate location allianced by World Class retail and Entertainment operators to propel Thailand’s economy towards higher level of prominence in Asia and the world,” concluded Mrs. Chadatip.

Siam Discovery under facelift

THE NATION Published on January 19, 2010

Siam Discovery will undergo a Bt1-billion makeover with new anchors, including a Madame Tussauds wax museum and Ice Planet ice-skating rink, and a stunning geometric facade.

"Renovation work is scheduled to start in March and is due for completion by October," Chadatip Chutrakul, CEO of Siam Piwat, the shopping complex's developer, said yesterday.

Operated by Merlin Entertainment, the first-ever Madame Tussauds in Bangkok will be the third in Asia after Hong Kong and Shanghai and the 10th worldwide.

The US$15 million (Bt500 million) wax museum will open in September featuring 70 figures of the world's famous celebrities and 3,000 square metres of retail space.

According to Merlin Entertainment, Madame Tussauds is designed to be a "must do" for all visitors.

Madame Tussauds is looking to work closely with Bangkok tourist and leisure organisations to promote the opening, and to ensure that in the future the attraction plays a key role in encouraging visitors both from overseas and from other parts of the country and region to the city.

The original wax attraction will also be at the centre of a planned major redevelopment of the Siam Discovery and surrounding area.

Chadatip said Madame Tussauds is expected to draw about 8,000 foreign tourists per day.

"About 35 per cent of visitors to Siam Discovery are now foreign tourists while 65 per cent are Thais. With the opening of Madame Tussauds, we expect to increase foreign visitors by 25 per cent and raise their share of overall visitors to 40 per cent," she said.

Foreign tourists enjoyed high spending power with average spending at the shopping complex of about Bt6,000 each time, she said.

Steven Kalayanamit, CEO of Ice Planet (Thailand), said the company would splurge Bt180 million on the September opening of its ice-skating rink.

"We want to open the world's most exciting ice-skating rink at the complex with total retail space of 2,000 square metres, including a live-band entertainment venue," he said.

Chadatip said Siam Piwat would contribute Bt350 million to the new Siam Discovery complex, of which Bt50 million would be for the opening of a new, 1,500-square metre multipurpose hall, scheduled for next year.

"We will spend Bt300 million to make over both the inside and outside of the Siam Discovery complex, including in particular a facade destined to be an architectural landmark of Bangkok and introducing Thailand to its first application of ETFE, an advanced engineering phenomenon in construction materials," she said.

Madame Tussauds launching in Bangkok

Bangkokpost Published: 1/10/2010 at 12:00 AM

Fans of celebrities may never get a chance to see their heroes in the flesh, but luckily for them the opening of a branch of the London-based Madame Tussauds wax museum in Bangkok will offer enthusiasts a chance to hold hands or lock lips with Hollywood heart-throbs like Brad Pitt and Johnny Depp or football studs David Beckham and Steven Gerrard.

The 500-million-baht attraction, located on the sixth floor of Siam Discovery, will be opened to visitors on Dec 4.

Housed in 3,000 square metres, it will feature more than 70 wax figures including Princess Diana, Barack Obama, Angelina Jolie and famous Thai figures such as M.R. Kukrit Pramoj, Khaosai Galaxy, Tata Young, Mitr Chaibancha, Theeradej Wongpuapan, and Anne Thongprasom.

Madame Tussauds has been granted a permission to create wax likenesses of His Royal Highness Prince Mahidol and Her Royal Highness the Princess Mother to be displayed in the Royal Hall as well.

The ticket price is 700 baht for adults and 500 baht for children to enter the wax museum and it expects 500,000 visitors generating 275 million baht in revenue the first year of operation.

Merlin Entertainment Group now operates 62 attractions and six hotels in 12 countries over three continents. Its attractions include Sea Life, the world's largest aquarium, Legoland, the London Eye and the Legoland Discovery Centre.

"Though the country had political unrest in May, we strongly believe in Thailand's economy and domestic travel encouragement programs implemented by the government. Apart from Madame Tussauds, we're also looking to develop a Legoland Discovery Centre in Thailand in the future," said Paul Williams, general manager of Madame Tussauds Bangkok.

A Legoland would cost between 300 million and 500 million baht.

In addition to Thailand, Mr Williams also plans to launch Legoland Park, another Merlin brand, in Malaysia in 2012.

Chadatip Chutrakul, CEO of Siam Piwat Co, the operator of Siam Discovery, said that apart from Madame Tussauds, Siam Discovery would house more than 20 famous restaurants and the Ice Planet skating rink costing 180 million baht.

Finishers will be WOW Gold sale the new ability Templar's Verdict for single targets Buy WOW Gold and Divine Storm for three or more targets. Templar's Verdict is a damage-dealer that scales up higher and more efficiently the more holy power you have RuneScape Gold invested into it. By the way, we sincerely invite all game players whether you are newbie or veteran to sale WOW gold. Divine Storm has been changed to work off holy power and is now one of your finishers. Much like Templar's Verdict, it gets more efficient RS Gold the more holy power is used with it.

Glyphing has changed Aion Gold with the introduction of the new prime glyphs which are essentially a replacement of Buy WOW Goldthe old major glyph slot. Like the talent tree changes, this too was done to allow for players to have more flexibility. For our prime glyphs, we have a small amount of choice. Glyph of Moonfire and Glyph of Insect Swarm are the two clear winners in terms of DPS; there's simply no comparison with anything else. For the third slot, you have the choice between Glyph of Wrath and Glyph of Starsurge. The Wrath Glyph is RS Gold better for single target DPS, the Starsurge Glyph is better for multi-target DPS; so which you choose to use really depends on the situation you find yourself in most.

UK-based operator plans three new attractIons in two years

The Nation Published on February 28, 2011

Merlin looking for opportunities to invest in Bangkok

Merlin Entertainments (Thailand), a leading UK-based operator of amusement parks and other attractions, is looking for investment opportunities in Bangkok.

The company, which opened Madame Tussauds Bangkok in December, expects to operate three attractions in Bangkok within two years, which will be packaged together into a "cluster" to generate economies of scale.

The company will spend between Bt400 million and Bt500 million to develop one new attraction. It also plans to take over at least one other facility.

Paul Williams, the company director and general manager of Madame Tussauds Bangkok, said the company is looking for empty space in Bangkok to develop a "Lego Land Discovery Centre".

He said that in London, the company runs clusters of entertainment attractions, including the London Eye, London Aquarium, and London Dungeon.

"In Bangkok, there is also the possibility of putting two or three attractions together so they can be sold in one package to customers," said Williams.

He added that with the cluster system, the company would be able to manage several attractions at a low cost, as it will require just one marketing manager and one operations manager to handle all the facilities.

Merlin Entertainments last Thursday officially opened Madame Tussauds waxwork museum in Bangkok. Located in Siam Discovery Centre, the 3,000-square-metre museum is expected to attract about 500,000 visitors in the first year, of which at least 80 per cent will be Thais.

Williams said that following the soft opening on December 4, Madame Tussauds had received very positive feedback from its customers.

Madame Tussauds Bangkok features 80 waxworks of popular movie stars and celebrities, including Theeradej "Ken" Wongpuapan, Ann Thongprasom, Khemanit "Pancake" Jamikorn, Tata Young, Yuenyong "Aed Carabao" Opakul, Johnny Depp, Nicole Kidman and US President Barack Obama.

The museum will launch waxworks of Spiderman in March, Sukrit "Bie" Wisetkaew in April and popular Japanese cartoon character Doraemon in May.

new ventures

In October, the museum will launch a 300-square-metre "Horror Maze". It will also open a 200-seat four-dimensional cinema in the next two years with an investment of Bt50 million.

Williams said Bangkok was a promising market with plenty of well-educated young people who enjoy a monthly income of between Bt20,000 and Bt25,000. They can't afford to visit the Madame Tussauds museums in London and New York.

He said about 80 per cent of the Bangkok attraction's customers are young people aged between 16 and 35.

Merlin Entertainments Group operates 62 attractions and six hotels in 13 countries around the world.

The company has Madame Tussauds wax museums in London, Amsterdam, Berlin, New York, Washington DC, Las Vegas, Hollywood, Hong Kong and Shanghai. The company will open a new Madame Tussauds in Vienna next month.

The Bangkok attraction is the first Madame Tussauds in Southeast Asia.

Siam Discovery goes hip after revamp of retail space

The Nation Published on June 1, 2011

Siam Piwat, operator of the Siam Centre, Siam Discovery and Siam Paragon shopping complexes, announced yesterday that it had spent more than Bt300 million on a complete overhaul of the 9,000-square-metre retail space on the sixth and seventh floors of Siam Discovery mall.

The centre is set to be the latest hip hang-out destination for young upwardly mobile professionals and modern families looking for a place to chill in downtown Bangkok.

Setting the tone are two new branded zones: The Sky Dining, a variety of casual and cosy family restaurants on the sixth floor; and MOOD, a specially designed space with towering glass windows to create the ultimate dining experience on the sixth and seventh floors.

Chadatip Chutrakul, president and CEO of Siam Piwat, yesterday said the company's key strategy was to be dynamic in renovating its shopping malls, which will be enhanced every year.

"We are not an operator of traditional malls, but want to be a trendsetter with one step ahead of trends and customers themselves," she said.

Siam Piwat is also focused on consumer research, including focus groups and online surveys, in order to update trends and consumer requirements, she said. The company spends about Bt30 million every year on marketing research activities.

She added that the move also aimed to reinforce the company's market leadership as a pioneer of innovation under the concept "The Ultimate Lifestyle and Entertainment Shopping Complex".

The revamp ties in with the addition of a host of flagship stores for new brands, aimed at appealing to shoppers ranging from modern families and young professionals to international tourists.

"We closed our shopping malls, located on Rama I Road, for two months last year due to the unrest in the area. We instead spent our time last year on a Bt1-billion major renovation of the Siam Discovery complex, which was conducted between July and November. We also invested another Bt100 million in the facelift of the Siam Centre complex, which was carried out between September and December," said Chadatip.
