Turkish national carrier Turkish Airlines (THY) said on Friday it has decided to buy 117 planes from European aircraft maker Airbus, with 82 firm orders and 35 options, between the years 2015 and 2020.
The carrier has been in talks with both Airbus and Boeing over the orders and Friday's announcement marks Turkey's largest single order for planes in history. The earlier record belonged to budget carrier Pegasus Airlines, which also turned its back on Boeing to order 100 Airbus jetliners in a $7.5 billion deal in December.

THY, the world's fastest-growing major carrier, said in a statement it will determine subsequent financing for the order from Airbus, a unit of the European Aeronautic Defence and Space Company (EADS). The order consists of 25 A321-200, four A320 NEO and 88 A321 NEO aircraft.

THY carried some 39 million passengers last year and expects to boost this number to 46 million this year. Having secured $8 billion in revenue in 2012, the carrier anticipates this figure will hit $18 billion by the end of 2020, when the fleet is slated to have 375 aircraft.

After launching 33 new routes in 2012, the carrier hopes to open as many as 40 more in 2013, around a quarter of them to Africa, and aims to be flying to every country in Europe by the end of the year

Turkish Airlines to buy 95 Boeing planes by 2021

Turkish Airlines has decided to buy a total of 95 narrow-body planes from Boeing by 2021, Turkey's flag carrier said on Tuesday, just weeks after placing a large order with European aircraft maker Airbus.
The fast-growing airline, which is pursuing an aggressive growth strategy as it targets a larger share of the global aviation market, announced 70 firm orders and options to buy a further 25 aircraft from Boeing between 2016-2021.

The company placed an order to buy 20 B737-800, 65 B737-8 MAX and 10 B737-9 MAX aircraft, it said in a statement to the Bourse Istanbul.

On March 15, Turkish Airlines said it would buy 117 narrow-body planes from Airbus, consisting of 82 firm orders and options to buy a further 35 aircraft in the years 2015-2020.

That order consisted of 25 A321-200 aircraft, four A320 NEO, 53 A321 NEO and an option for a further 35 A321 NEO.

The airline carried 39 million passengers last year and expects to reach 46 million passengers this year, growing to 90 million by the end of 2020, it said.

It wants to generate annual sales of $18 billion within seven years, after posting sales of nearly $8 billion last year

Looks like Manila, an important city in Southeast Asia, isn't served by TK. I wonder when it will begin, as well as which aircraft it will use. TK already flies to SIN, CGK, BKK, KUL, and SGN, but not MNL... perhaps it's really time to see TK operate the route before another airline does it first.

The A380 probably overrated but it serves its purpose on key routes...

The A340 birds are being phased out as we speak. I think the B773-ER is a super aircraft, and it is enough to push out many financially rotten airliners out of long haul operations such as Austrian and so on. Also I can tell that they are targeting us from the Balkans to use their service. I can see that by looking at their baggage allowance. We can take two bags with us.

Turkish coming to San Francisco?

The Turkish Airlines facebook page and multiple media outlets reported in Nov 2012 that services would be commencing, subject to aircraft availability, between Istanbul and San Francisco. Other cities cited for expansion included Montreal, Mexico City and Boston.

The messages are still on the official facebook site, but I haven't seen any updates at all.

Anyone know anything?

When will Turkish Airlines start Australian services? That will be fantastic for Australia and them! And amazing growth, I think this will be the major airline linking Europe with the Americas/Oceania in the next 10 years.

Turkish Airlines has a long wish list of new destinations, so every now and then new destinations pop up that they will be starting at some point in time. This means that there are a lot of destination that will have to be announced officially at some point, until that happens there's not much to say about when they will actually start those routes.

As for Australia, TK has said earlier this year that they are looking into flying non-stop from Istanbul. This could possibly be done with a 777-300ER, but only with major weight restrictions. If they want to fully utilize this route then they will have to buy/lease some planes with a bigger range like the 777-200LR or maybe even the A340-500.

It will take time for Turkish Airlines to open those destinations, especially that it is now leasing B77Ws from Jet Airways to keep up with the growing passenger demands for many flights. Plus, it is even leasing even more aircraft from other carriers to cope with all the new flights coming in, as well as awaiting even more new aircraft over the next several years.

Istanbul’s two airports are the fastest-growing in Europe

Thanks to the amazing Turkish Airlines, Istanbul’s two airports are the fastest-growing, the only airports in the top 30 with seat capacity up more than 10% this summer.

For how long is TK still going to operate to Cape Town via Johannesburg?

1) I believe JNB can sustain the daily A330 flight on its own.

2) They don't have any traffic rights, and will never get any on this domestic JNB-CPT sector.

3) CPT can probably do at least 3 weekly nonstop A330 flights.

4) If it has to be a 1-stop route, can't they rather operate via another African destination where they at least can get some traffic rights...as CPT has also very limited African destinations. Like:

IST-Kinshasa-CPT, is probably the shortest route where there will also be a little bit of market on FIH-CPT.
Similarly IST-Brazzaville-CPT
This could still be done by narrowbody fleet, although the idea of a 737 all the way for that long will probably damage the market.
Other shorter routings where there is no route from CPT and with a market to both CPT and IST could be routing IST-Lusaka-CPT...which would still make it shorter than via JNB. Also IST-Lubumbashi-CPT.

TK has 15 777s on order with Boeing. I also think that if I remember correctly they have 15 A330s on order with Airbus. That could help with expansion when the new planes comes on order.
