How does it work when it comes to the connecting flights from YYZ via IST to some Balkan cities?

I want to switch to Turkish Airlines when I fly to the Balkans. I am sick and tired of Austrian and LH.

Turkish Airlines makes Bangkok its regional hub

Bangkokpost 24/02/2010

Turkish Airlines is moving to consolidate Bangkok as its regional hub as it aggressively expands in Southeast Asia, Australia and New Zealand.

The Istanbul-based carrier is counting on Thai Airways International (THAI) as its strategic partner to begin its foray into the Australia-New Zealand market.

The airline plans to extend its non-stop flight from Istanbul to Bangkok through to Ho Chi Minh City in October, while Kuala Lumpur and Manila are also on the radar screen for flight extension, possibly next year.

It hopes to increase its Istanbul-Bangkok flights from daily to twice daily later this year if its plan to extend services to Australia-New Zealand partnering with THAI materialises.

Adnan Aykac, general manager for Thailand, Vietnam and Cambodia, said yesterday that negotiations with THAI to form a code-share partnership began about a year ago and had been slow.

Turkish Airlines would switch its passengers to THAI-operated flights to Australia under the plan, but THAI does not see any urgency to co-operate.

"While we are hopeful we can strike a deal with THAI later this year, we do have alternatives to support our growth in this region," he said.

The airline sees Australia as a lucrative market not adequately covered and wants to exploit THAI's extensive Australian routes, before entering the region itself.

Turkish Airlines transfers about 30,000 of its passengers a year to THAI's Australian network, and Turkish has had a sales office in Australia for 15 years.

He said a code-share deal with THAI would result in Turkish Airlines feeding some 40,000 passengers a year to THAI's Australian-bound flights.

The airline wishes to work with THAI on Australian operations although the Australian government signed its first air services agreement with Turkey this week allowing direct flights.

Turkish Airlines bucked the trend of slumping traffic through Bangkok last year, when domestic political unrest, the global downturn and H1N1 flu hurt the airline business. It claimed a 5% increase in traffic through Bangkok in 2009, raising its load factor by 6% from 2008 to an average of 80%.

The airline expects to increase these numbers as it strengthens brand awareness in the Thai market. It has budgeted 30 million baht for advertising and promotion this year, perhaps the largest sum for a foreign carrier in Thailand.

The airline allocated US$70 million for advertising worldwide this year, 50% more than 2009. "We hope 2010 will be way different (in growth figures) for us (in Thailand)," he said.

Turkish Airlines plans to fly to Tanzania

By Apolinari Tairo | Feb 24, 2009

DAR ES SALAAM, Tanzania (eTN) - Turkey’s national carrier, Turkish Airlines, has announced its plan to establish direct flights between Istanbul and Tanzania’s capital city of Dar es Salaam in the near future.

In a joint communiqué issued during the final day of the visit by Turkish President Abdullah Gul to Tanzania, among key areas of cooperation between Tanzania and Turkey will be aviation business.

Tanzanian Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Minister Bernard Membe said Turkish Airlines has shown a great interest to join other big airlines to establish schedule flights to Tanzania as a forward step to foster stronger bilateral trade ties between Turkey and Tanzania.

While in Tanzania, the Turkish president said he was disappointed in the lack of direct flights between the two countries. Turkish travelers visiting Tanzania have to pass through Nairobi in Kenya.

Turkish Airlines operates on a network of scheduled services to 140 global destinations and 135 domestic destinations. It serves 155 airports in Europe, Asia, Africa and America.

The airline operates flights in 11 African airports including Nairobi, the newly established destination launched during last weekend’s visit in Kenya by the Turkish president.

Turkish Airlines to Australia in 2011

Turkish Airlines to enter Australian market in 2011

Turkish Airlines CEO Temel Kotil in Sydney yesterday

Turkish Airlines plans to start flying into Australia from 2011, its chief executive announced Tuesday at a press conference in Sydney.

After giving a presentation at the Australia Pacific Aviation Outlook Summit 2009 yesterday, CEO Temel Kotil told reporters that Australia was a destination it planned to serve two years from now.

With the carrier’s expansion to Jakarta scheduled to start at the end of this month, Kotil said a Boeing 777-300 aircraft would serve the Australian route from Istanbul via Jakarta.

Kotil was confident that the carrier would be able to compete in the Australian market as it “covers Europe better” than any other airline.

He expects the flights will bring in many tourists from Turkey and be able to serve Australians desiring to visit Turkey for ANZAC services.

The carrier plans to continue expanding its network and frequency, with the Philippines and Vietnam next on its destination wish list.

Kotil added that the carrier hopes to double its frequency in the next two to three years, with hopes to eradicate limitations on destinations such as Narita, Japan which it hopes to increase its four-weekly flights to daily operations.

To serve its expansion Turkish Airlines have ordered 19 aircraft, 12 of which are Boeing 777-300s in a 3-class configuration and 7 of which are Airbus 330-300s.

Turkish keeps growing by incredible numbers in 2010 too

THY boosts passenger numbers by 25 pct in first two months

Quote:
National flag carrier Turkish Airlines (THY) increased its number of passengers by 25 percent in the first two months of the year over the same period of last year -- a sign that aviation in Turkey is recovering much more quickly than the rest of the economy.

In a written statement released yesterday on the Public Disclosure Platform (KAP) of the İstanbul Stock Exchange (İMKB), THY said the number of passengers grew by 25 percent from 3.1 million in the first two months of 2009 to 3.9 million in the same period of this year. Passengers flying business class to international destinations also jumped by 30 percent in January and February over a year ago, and flights arriving from and departing for cities outside Turkey shot up 40 percent. Occupancy rates are also on the rise, increasing by 2.8 percentage points to hit 69.1 percent in the first two months of the year. Moreover, the available seat kilometers (ASK), a measure of an airline’s passenger carrying capacity, grew by 29 percent, from 7.2 billion to 9.3 billion.

The airline showed increases in other areas as well: The number of flights grew by 21.9 percent, to reach 34,870 in January and February over the same period a year ago. The airline’s stock, listed as THYAO on the İMKB, increased by 1.89 percent to close at TL 5.40 per share at the end of the first session of trading yesterday.

Passenger numbers:

2004 - 12 million
2005 - 14 million
2006 - 17 million
2007 - 19.7 million
2008 - 21.5 million
2009 - 25.1 million
2010 - 32 million (by keeping 25% over the year)

THY should just fly some new/better planes to Karachi. I hate those old sans-IFE 737s for a 5 hour flight. The day they put a better plane on this sector, I'll start flying THY exclusively. I really want to fly THY, but can't.

El Al signs code share agreement with Atlasjet
22 March 2010

El Al and Atlasjet, a Turkish airline, signed a code share agreement on Sunday through which the Israeli airline will operate a daily flight to Istanbul starting in April.

The signing ceremony was held in El Al's offices between El Al CEO Eliezer Shkedi, Atlasjet Chairman Murat Ersoy - who arrived especially from Istanbul, and Turkey's tourism attaché in Israel, Inanc Ozcakmak.

Ersoy said, "As Turkish friends of Israel, we are excited about the cooperation, and we hope that this will be an opening for improved political relations between the countries."

Shkedi said that the agreement provides an opportunity for El Al: "We believe that cooperation between El Al and Atlasjet is an important bridge for contributing to good relations between the countries and people, and I hope we will return and see this in the near future."
