Discussion l Women Driving

There was a discussion about this in one of the threads in the projects section, but I didn't want to hijack it to re-visit the topic.

Anyway, a couple of people said that women are not banned by law to drive. That it was more of a cultural/traditional issue. If that is the case, then women wouldn't be fined or punished in any way if they were caught driving by law enforcement. Is that not the case in the kingdom today?

I've always thought it was a legal matter. If it really isn't, then there isn't really any force barring women to drive. If it's not immoral, and if it's not illegal, then why don't we see at least some women resist tradition?

Women are banned to drive! LOL! Though not officially in the laws, but any women driving can be sent to jail.

no,the don't go to jail for doing that
you can read it from time to time in the newspapers "about a girl or a women had an accident here or there" but usually the matter will be driving without a license!!
however, you can see the women driving in the rural areas and the small villages !!!!
for me I think this "discussion" about the women driving is going to be finished in the next couple of a years

It's a cultural matter . and seeing how things are right now .. I second Rody on his speculation that women will drive in the near future . It sure will change our society dramatically .. and for that I'm worried .

Women need the same rights like men, to be able to drive, to work, to travel ALONE, to have fun going out whenever she wants, to be protected by law, simply to be free etc etc... when all of these happen we can say society is changed

I visited Saudi Arabia years ago, and to this day I still don't understand why women are not allowed to drive. Someone help?
