Chelsea owner Abramovich joins Russia on promoting 2018 World Cup bid

Roman Abramovich is meeting international football officials to push Russia's bid to host the 2018 World Cup.

The billionaire owner of Premier League champion Chelsea was making his first formal appearance in Russia's campaign Thursday on the sidelines of the FIFA Congress in Johannesburg.

The nine candidates to host the World Cup in 2018 or 2022 explained their bids to delegates from FIFA's 208 national members. The exhibition was closed to the public and media.

Abramovich was joined by Russia's team captain Andrey Arshavin.

David Beckham was there with England's bid team which is expected to be Russia's main rival for 2018 hosting rights.

FIFA's 24-member executive committee chooses the two hosts in December.

Russia Makes Strong Case at FIFA Bidding Expo with Abramovich Alongside First Deputy PM Shuvalov and Arshavin

Russia presented today its bid to host either the 2018 or 2022 FIFA World Cup™ to the worldwide football family gathered at the 60th Ordinary FIFA Congress in Johannesburg.

Making a strong case on behalf his country was also Roman Abramovich, who spoke alongside First Deputy Prime Minister Igor Shuvalov and football star Andrei Arshavin to the congress delegates visiting the FIFA Bidder Expo.

Shuvalov, Abramovich and Arshavin spearheaded a high-profile delegation of the Russian Bid Committee, including also FIFA Executive Committee member Vitaly Mutko and Russian Football Union President Sergei Fursenko, to familiarize several hundred delegates with the concept and the details of the Russian bid campaign to earn the right to host either the 2018 or 2022 FIFA World Cup™.

During the FIFA Bidder Expo, the personalities and dignitaries also met with FIFA President Joseph S. Blatter and a large number of members of the FIFA Executive Committee.

First Deputy Prime Minister Shuvalov welcomed the opportunity to promote Russia’s bid just before the start of the 2010 FIFA World Cup. “It is most impressive to see how the FIFA World Cup is galvanising South Africa as a whole and we would be thrilled to be given the honour to host the world likewise in 2018 or 2022.”

“Russia is vast and most diverse. It would be a unique experience for all participating teams and football fans to experience our country and its warm hospitality”, Shuvalov added.

With his presence in Johannesburg, Chelsea FC owner and businessman Roman Abramovich further underlined the importance that Russia gives to its candidature. Abramovich is supporting Russian football by a number of initiatives, specifically in the area of football development.

“Russia is a new and vibrant country with a lot of experience in staging grand sporting events,” Abramovich stated. “We are an emerging football power, yet we have never hosted the FIFA World Cup™. The World Cup in Russia would be leaving a lasting legacy for generations to come, on the pitch and beyond.”

Andrei Arshavin emphasised: “We are passionate about football. 1.9 million people play the game in Russia.”

“The ultimate dream is to play a World Cup in your country and to win it. For me that may not be possible but for the next generations of young Russian players it would be a great goal towards which to work.”

Following the FIFA World Cup™, the next milestone for the bid is the inspection visit, when a delegation of FIFA experts will visit Russia from 16 to 19 August. FIFA will designate the host nations for the 2018 and 2022 World Cup tournaments at a special meeting of the Executive Committee on 2 December 2010.

Russia's 2018 World Cup bid book stolen in South Africa

Two volumes of Russia's 2018 World Cup bid book have been stolen from the country's display stand in South Africa, the head of Russia's bid told a government daily on Tuesday.

Bid books generally contain all technical data on the bid and information on the proposed social and global legacy of the competition. Russia brought two copies of the book, each containing three volumes, to the official presentation in South Africa.

"They were lying on an illuminated stand, and visitors were allowed to touch them and look through. As a result, two volumes were stolen. The introductory volume and the volume devoted to stadiums disappeared. The same thing with the Dutch bid, by the way. Two volumes of the bid book were stolen from them, too," Russian Football Union director general Alexei Sorokin said in an interview with Rossiiskaya Gazeta.

He said that the incident will not harm Russia's bid.

"We have 500 copies of them. Two volumes of one copy were stolen," the official said. "All participants had something missing from their display stands... It's just a laughable incident and nothing more."

Russia is competing with England, Spain and Portugal and Belgium and the Netherlands to host the World Cup in 2018.

After the presentation, FIFA's executive committee is due to pay visits to applicant countries throughout the summer before deciding on the hosts on December 2.

The head of Russia's bid said the presentation, supported by Arsenal star Andrei Arshavin, went smoothly and he was satisfied with the results.

"I think, the Russian and British got most of the attention," he said.

"The British had [David] Beckham, we had [First Deputy Prime Minister Igor] Shuvalov, [tycoon and Chelsea owner Roman] Abramovich and Arshavin. And also top sports officials, namely [sports minister Vitaly] Mutko and [RFU president] Fursenko," Sorokin said.

Is there a danger that the current issues that the 2014 Sochi Olympic Games are having will come across as a danger sign to FIFA? There seems to have een major organisational issues that have hamstrung the building works, seeing major cost rises from the projections, forcing the Premier to get involved.

Such things may come to hurt Russias bid.

Overall though, I think it is between England and Russia. The only other bid I see with a chance is the Iberian one, but it is the outsider I would suspect in this race. In saying that though, the Benelux and Iberian bids are flying under the radar as the other 2 war it out. It may work in their favour.

there are no large issues, just small issues with payouts to locals who asking more. and few issues with some subcontractors. even with all those issues things will be ready long before games.

there is actually a thread on this

Thats a massive investment to make. Certainly shows the commercial market opportunities available by having a Russian WC. Thats why I suspect that Russia is favourite now to win, along with the quality of their stadiums and overall bid.

Not denying that it may have been a blip on the radar, but these things can go down badly when going for other events if there is any instability. Thats why it is something that may come back as an issue in the run up to the host announcement/voting.

For Euro 2012, there is not Fenerhbace stadium 50 000 seats ( UEFA 5 Stars) because there is also Olympic stadium and Galatasaray stadium.

Is it possible to have more than 2 stadiums in the same city for a WC ?

3 stadiums in Moscow and 1 in Moscow region.
FIFA doesn't require exact maximum number of proposed stadiums. But when in 2013 they will choose stadiums to host WC games - they can choose any number - 1,2,3. It depends on their decision.

Ok thanks. Which one is on Moscow region ? How far ?

Yes I konw, for example France 98 there was both Parc des Princes (Paris) and Stade de France (St Denis).

But more than 2, if UEFA/FIFA rules are approximatively the same, it could not be possible. UEFA says no for Fenerbahce stadium in Turkey bid for Euro 2016. And it's a 5 stars stadium which host UEFA final cup 2009. Because of 2 others stadium in Istambul.

I have really doubt for 3 stadiums in Moscow.
