Russia Bid Faces Stadium Construction Challenge in Race for 2018 World Cup

The huge challenge facing Russia in its quest to secure the 2018 or 2022 World Cup was laid bare today when the bid team revealed details of its proposed 16 stadiums in 13 host cities.

Four stadia in the Moscow area would stage games; 13 new venues are planned.

The Russian government is preparing to invest billions in developing the country's football stadium infrastructure. Funding of new stadiums and renovations will also come from private investors and municipal sources.

Luzhniki Stadium, located at the centre of Moscow’s 145-hectare Olympic complex, would be the showpiece venue, hosting the opening match, a semi-final and the final.

The stadium, originally built in 1956 and subjected to several renovations down the years, would be further modernised if Russia landed the World Cup to increase capacity to 89,300.

Dynamo Stadium, six km north west of Moscow’s city centre, would also be updated and capacity raised to 45,000 spectators.

A new 47,000-seat stadium for FC Spartak is earmarked for a 31.28-hectare site in the north-western administrative district of Moscow, about 25 km from the city centre.

Another new-build proposed is Stadium Moscow Region to be constructed on a 64-hectare site on the edge of the city that would also house a variety of other sports facilities.

The dramatic architectural concept of the 44,250-seater is designed to provide a iconic venue at one of the gateways to Moscow. The structure is designed in two parts, with one façade reflecting the idyllic natural scenery to the east and south and the other reflecting the Moscow skyline to the north and west.

In Sochi, the Black Sea resort in southern Russia, the legacy 25,000-capacity seating configuration of the Olympic Stadium for the 2014 Winter Games will be increased to 45,460 for the FIFA World Cup. A cut in the stadium's seating bowl will afford spectators views of the mountains and sea.

Other new stadiums in Russia's World Cup bid include a 68,000-seater St. Petersburg and venues in the cities of Kazan, Kaliningrad, Nizhny Novgorod, Saransk, Krasnodar, Rostov-on-Don, Samara, Yaroslavl and Volgograd .

Uralmash Stadium in Yekaterinburg is the only stadium outside Moscow that would be upgraded for the World Cup.

Last month, first deputy prime minister and World Cup bid co-chairman, Igor Shuvalov, told INSIDER that Russia was committed to building six new stadiums irrespective of the outcome of FIFA’s vote on Dec. 2.

Shuvalov said the bid book, handed over to FIFA on May 14, was specifically pitched towards legacy to meet FIFA's demands.

“We’re very careful and listen to people and have heard from the president of FIFA that Capacity at Luzhniki Stadium would be raised to 89,300 (Getty)
along with the World Cup itself the country should Capacity at Luzhniki Stadium would be raised to 89,300 (Getty)provide development,” he said.

“We realized that Russia can become candidate number one because we can provide development."

FIFA inspectors will visit Russia to scrutinise the country's bid plans in greater detail from Aug. 16-19.

England, Russia's biggest bid rivals for the 2018 World Cup that is expected to be awarded to Europe, is the next stop on FIFA's schedule of visits to each of the nine bidders for 2018/2022.

The FIFA delegation heads to England Aug. 23-26.

Thank you for the answer.

I'm thinking that Qatar bid is more condense in a small area than Moscow stadiums.

South Africa 2010, Brazil 2014, Russia 2018?

Russia's football stadiums are in desperate need of a makeover, especially as the country is hoping to host the world's biggest sporting event in 2018 or 2022.

If Russia wins the bid, the government is planning to build at least 12 new stadiums across the country - and provide all the infrastructure needed to keep football fans happy.

Russia Business Report presenter Fiona Foster caught up with Arkady Dvorkovich, President Medvedev's Chief Economic Advisor, and asked him why Russia was so keen to host the World Cup.

Gorgeous from the outside. I don't much like the shadows on the pitch though, as seen in the 3rd and 4th images.

KALININGRAD (45,015)

STADIUM

The new FIFA World Cup™ Stadium Kaliningrad will be situated on the banks of an island around which flows the Pregolya River. Its star-like design reflects the shape of the historic entrenchment that lies outside the city. Water is featured in the old defence architecture as well as in the new city development and plays an important role in the landscape design of the precinct, allowing for stunning views of the city centre and harbour of Kaliningrad. With its FIFA World Cup™ Stadium, Kaliningrad will deliver a football venue of the highest quality. Designed to meet all the FIFA requirements to host group games, Kaliningrad will have a capacity of 45,015 seats.

FAN FEST

The Kneiphof Island in the historic city centre of Kaliningrad shall host the main Fan Fest of this Host City. The island is one of the city's main tourist attractions accommodating several museums, Kaliningrad Cathedral and the grave of Immanuel Kant. The island is connected to the mainland through five bridges.

SAINT PETERSBURG (69,501)

STADIUM

The City Government is building a new state-of-the-art stadium for FC Zenit with a capacity of 62,000 spectators. The stadium will be located in the western part of the Krestovsky Island replacing an old Kirov Stadium. Designed by iconic architect Kisho Kurokava to resemble a spaceship, the stadium will have a high-tech retractable pitch. Surrounded on three sides by water, the venue is a model of sustainable and environmentally eco-architecture technologies, including rainwater recycling, drainage water recycling, and the use of solar energy.

FAN FEST

The Fan Fest shall be located in the main square on the left bank of the Neva River, the historic Palace Square. Different architectural styles are combined in an elaborate and aesthetically pleasing way on this wide square. It is surrounded by important historical buildings such as the State Hermitage Museum, the building of the former Royal Guards' General Staff, the classical yellow-and-white building of the former Imperial Army General Staff, the Admiralty and the Admiralty Garden.

MOSCOW

STADIUMS

Luzhniki Stadium

Luzhniki Stadium is at the centre of Moscow's 145 hectare Olympic complex, one of the largest sports complexes in the world. Originally built in 1956, Luzhniki Stadium has been renovated several times and is now designated a 5-star football stadium by UEFA. Further renovation for the 2018/2022 FIFA World Cup™ will increase seating capacity to 89,318 and ensure that the stadium will meet or exceed FIFA requirements for the Opening Match, the one of the semi-final matches and the Final.

Dynamo Stadium

Dynamo Stadium will be located in Petrovsky Park, just six km northwest of Moscow's city centre. The new stadium will be a refurbishment of the famed old Dynamo Stadium, home of FC Dynamo Moscow, a legendary site for many dramatic matches in Russia's football history. Dynamo is the only club that has continuously played in both the Soviet and the Russian Premier Leagues. Beginning in the 1920s, Dynamo Stadium held football matches with a bicycle track running around the pitch. The asymmetry if the original horse-shoe shaped building is still visible in relation of the façade to the pitch.

Spartak Stadium

Spartak Stadium will be located on a site of 31.28 hectares in the north-western administrative district of Moscow, about 25 km from the city centre. The new Spartak Stadium will meet the highest standards of a modern state-of-the-art football venue. The stadium will play host to FC Spartak, which, in its 75-year tradition of excellence in football, has never occupied its own stadium.

FIFA World Cup™ Stadium Moscow Region

The new FIFA World Cup™ Stadium Moscow Region will be located on the outskirts of Moscow. The location is situated amid a lovely natural landscape but has easy access to two Metro stations and the Moscow Circle Highway. The spacious 64 hectare site features a variety of sporting facilities, including three training pitches and separate athletic roads. All these facilities are available for the FIFA World Cup™.

FAN FESTS

Moscow: Red Square

This Fan Fest will be held at the most iconic location in Moscow: the famous Red Square. This truly spectacular site is a symbol of Russia par excellence. Using this national treasure as a Fan Fest Site will give both it and the tournament an unequalled historical and cultural dimension.

Moscow: Vorob'evy Hills

The second site for the Moscow Fan Fest is on the Vorob'evy Hills, home to the landmark high-rise building of Moscow State University. The site offers a fantastic panorama of the city and is only a short way from the city centre.

KAZAN (45,105)

STADIUM

In 2013 the city will host the Summer Universiade and is building a new 45,015-seat capacity stadium that will become the home stadium for FC Rubin Kazan. It will be located on the western edge of the Volga River, on a site of 24.6 hectares that acts as a gateway to the city from its waterfront site. In concert with the ancillary sporting accommodation, the waterfront site will be developed as a dedicated sporting precinct with excellent supportive infrastructure and amenities.

FAN FEST

In Kazan we propose to use the Central Stadium as the Fan Fest location. The site offers a stunning view of the Kazan Kremlin citadel and is located on the Kazanka riverbank next to the historic centre of the city.

NIZHNY NOVGOROD (44,899)

STADIUM

The FIFA World Cup™ Stadium Nizhny Novgorod will be the premier football stadium in Nizhny, capable of accommodating 44,899 spectators. The new stadium will occupy a prominent position on a 92.2 hectare island in the Volga River. The island is situated north of the city and provides an ideal location for maximising Nizhny's dramatic skyline. At the same time, the new stadium will be a landmark that integrates the city and the water's edge, creating a new visual and spatial relationship between Nizhny and the Volga.

FAN FEST

The picturesque Volga embankment near the ancient Nizhny Novgorod Kremlin will host the Fan Fest. This central location is within walking distance of all the attractions of the city centre.

YAROSLAVL

STADIUM

FIFA World Cup™ Stadium Yaroslavl is centrally positioned within the urban core of Yaroslavl, a city located at the confluence of the Volga and the Kotorosl Rivers. FIFA World Cup™ Stadium Yaroslavl will be built on the site of the home ground of the FC Shinnik Yaroslavl football team.

FAN FEST

The Strelka in Yaroslavl is situated at the confluence of the Volga and Kotorosl rivers and will serve as the site of the Yaroslavl Fan Fest. This headland is the extension of the most famous park in the city and a popular local recreation area.

SAMARA

STADIUM

The new FIFA World Cup™ Stadium Samara will be located on a 36.2 hectare precinct on Koroviy Island, situated in a prominent position at the confluence of the Volga and Samara Rivers. The outstanding riverfront location and the bold design concept of Samara Stadium will ensure its status as an iconic venue for the FIFA World Cup™.

FAN FEST

In Samara, the vast City Centre Square, the most frequented public square of Samara, will serve as the location for the Fan Fest. It offers a capacity of more than 36,000, including a grand stand for 3,700 facing the palace. Alternatively the Fan Fest can take place at an area overlooking the Volga River.

VOLGOGRAD

STADIUM

The new FIFA World Cup™ Stadium Volgograd will be located in a park on the beautiful Volga River bank on a site of 32 hectares. The stadium is part of an urban landscape park stretching out along the Volga and the next to the Mamayev Mound memorial complex, which commemorates the battle of Stalingrad from World War II.

FAN FEST

The Fan Fest in Volgograd is located on the Volga riverbank on the Central Staircase Embankment, offering unique and spectacular scenery with perfect views to the river. As a popular leisure area for residents, it will become a gathering place for all fans. The site is very centrally located, offering a capacity of more than 36,000 fans, within walking distance of the city centre.

SARANSK

STADIUM

The government has budgeted and commissioned a new stadium to be completed for the city's millennium celebration in 2012. The new FIFA World Cup™ Stadium Saransk will be located on the east side of the river crossing where the city was founded in the 17th century and will be fully FIFA compliant. The street that will connect the stadium to the city centre crosses the Insar River and serves as the backbone of the city. The new stadium will be the keystone of the new business park linking the two parts of the city and the road connects Saransk with a future high-tech business development on the east banks of the Insar. The stadium represents the highlight of this development.

FAN FEST

The Sovetskaya Square in front of the government building in the centre of Saransk is proposed to host the main Fan Fest. This location offers a beautiful view of the city park as well as the main sports complex of the city. Capacity for the site is at least 23,000 fans.

KRASNODAR

STADIUM

The site for the new FIFA World Cup™ Stadium Krasnodar is situated on the northern edge of the Krasnodarskoye Reservoir, about 14 km southeast of Krasnodar's city centre. The 50 hectare site is part of an urban development transforming that part of the lakeshore into an urban recreational park. The stadium will be the landmark for both the new park and its neighbouring residential areas. The crown will be send from across the water, serving as an iconic attraction that will bring new life to the Krasnodarskoye Reservoir area.

FAN FEST

The main Fan Fest area is located on the downtown Theatre Square, the most well-known square in Krasnodar, offering a capacity for 12,000 fans. A second city square is available in order to meet the minimum requirement of 30,000 fans.

ROSTOV-ON-DON

STADIUM

The new FIFA World Cup™ Stadium Rostov-on-Don will be located on the left bank of the beautiful Don River, just opposite the centre of the city on a site of 52 hectares. The site is part of a large recreational area of stunning beauty on the south bank of the river. It is a very popular place for residents of all ages to spend their leisure time. Incorporating the new stadium into this pristine landscape will be done with great care to ensure that the existing trees and lush green areas are not impacted.

FAN FEST

The main city square with the Stella Memorial complex shall serve as Rostov-on-Don's Fan Fest area. It is in the city centre with the Gorky Theatre facing the square and a fantastic fountain with water games in the centre of the square. This exceptional site offers a capacity for at least 20,000 fans.

SOCHI

STADIUM

The new FIFA World Cup™ Stadium Sochi will be located alongside the beautiful cast of the Black Sea, just a mere 150 metres from the water. The facility offers stunning views of the mountains and the sea. Developed as the Olympic Stadium for the Sochi 2014 Olympic Winter Games, the facility is part of a complex of sport facilities and will host the Opening and Closing Ceremonies for the Winter Games. The geographical features that have shaped Sochi - the mountains and sea - inspired the architectural concept of the stadium.

FAN FEST

The square in front of the Sochi Art Museum is known for becoming an open-air stage for different events and public performances in the evening, while freelance artists roam the place during the daytime. This lively centre of Sochi shall serve as the city's main Fan Fest area, offering a capacity for approximately 20,000 fans.

YEKATERINBURG

STADIUM

The FIFA World Cup™ Stadium Yekaterinburg is located on a 17.8 hectare site in the historic central part of the city. The stadium will be a refurbishment of the existing Uralmash Stadium, which is the home of Russian First Division team FC Ural. Yekaterinburg is a historic city with many heritage buildings, including the Uralmash Stadium itself. The stadium was built in 1957 in one of the oldest parts of Yekaterinburg.

FAN FEST

This site, located next to the Iset River, is the Historical Square, one of the main tourist attractions of Yekaterinburg. This downtown city park shall serve as our main Fan Fest area. It is possible to integrate the river into the Fan Fest concept at this location, which would create a fantastic setting for the football celebrations.

nice presentation.
It's a very strong bid, for me favorite along with England for 2018.

But 3 stadiums in moscow and another one on its outskirts is too much.
