I found the picture on my travels but couldn't find any info on it - I thought it looked quite tacky - something thrown up in the 70s out of plasterboard for perhaps a film set. If I remove the offending picture from my post would that be an act of thread communism?

It's a reconstruction of the old Soviet K7 Heavy Bomber, not sure it actually flies though.

For balance we need a 'Positively National-Socialist' thread.

Along similar lines - with the revolutionary forward swept wing - the Sukhoi Su-47 Berkut.

Is it the music? The architecture? The people? I hope everyone's following the thread instructions. Communist punishments if you aren't.

The work of the constructivists in the early years of the revolution are some of my favourite pieces of 20th century art and design. Of course when the revolution was won the Soviet cultural scence quickly descended into stagnation and "Socialist Realist" folk pastiche. But while it was good it was great.

Should probably add that if communism hadn't been attempted and failed then there would still be many people advocating for it, so you could argue it's a good thing it's in the past rather than the future.

The tanks in Red Square and Russian police manhandling someone are simply darling!

And who can forget Stalin?

+1

Also, I think we can credit Russian communism for influencing the political landscape of Western Europe. Although we managed to stay out of the commie sphere of influence, a lot of people here wanted communism and hence we've been infected with a lot of socialistic ideas, for better or worse. Just look at the Labour party...

In terms of the Labour Party that's not really true, although it may be for individual members. The Labour Party is rooted in the workers and trade union movements and to a lesser extent the non-conformist churches of the 19th Century, and not directly influenced by Soviet Communism. Communists were traditionally very opposed to alternative socialist movements, be they democratic socialists or anarchists (see Homage to Catalonia) and the Labour Party rejected the inclusion of communist groups within it in the 1920s.

Other than that I'm going to be serious and boring and say no, the world would be a better place today if there wouldn't have been any communism, even if some may argue that it was a product of its time.

Very true - much of the radical art and design put forward by the Constructivists was embaced initially, but was soon seen as suspect and ultimately sidelined.

A great betrayal, but frankly just one of many.

Berthold Lubetkin, the architect of London Zoo's penguin pool was a Constructivist.
