Johor Bahru Transportation Plan

JB structure plan: Rail and water transportation systems
SOURCE: http://www.iskandarmalaysia.com.my/p...alaysia_EN.pdf

The city of Johor Bahru is Malaysia's 'Southern Gateway', receiving 60% of foreign tourists who visit Malaysia. It is a major holiday and shopping destination for neighbouring Singaporeans due to the comparatively lower cost of goods and services. Johor Bahru is the Central Business District and the State Capital of Johor. It is also the main gateway into and out of Singapore (via the Causeway).

In the future, a multi-modal terminal will be developed in Flagship A, as well as an MRT/LRT system connecting Johor Bahru City Centre to other areas in Iskandar Malaysia.

Tram-like buses for 2 cities
13 January 2010 , By New Straits Times

Penang and Johor Baru will be the first two cities in the peninsula to get underway the Transport Ministry's tram-like transport system called the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) line.

Widely-used worldwide, the tram-like transport costs less to develop compared to Light Rail Transit.

Brainstorming sessions between the authorities and public transport experts on the system are going on.

Transport Minister Datuk Seri Ong Tee Keat said the authorities are looking at some of the models that are being used abroad, including the Bogota model.

"We are aware that the LRT system is quite costly.

"We are looking at BRT lines which could cover more areas," he said.
Ong said this after the launch of RapidBET or Rapid Bus Express Transit routes from Kota Damansara and Sungai Long to Pasar Seni.

It is said to cut travelling time by half.

I think the proposed LRT ROUTE is actually KTM track right...

since KTM track end at both 2nd link and causeway and it will be almost imposible due to many reason for KTM to double track itway into singapore or SMRT to come into malaysia...

it would be better for both country to just end their respective "LRT cum KTM komuter" and MRT to both CIQ... there a people mover type system like the one in changi or KLIA will transport people from one CIQ to the other country CIQ and vice versa...then people will move on using MRT or "KTM LRT" respectively...

yup,, it will be alot of work but at least it could be done without political and sentimental interference...

Nope, it is possible and sure it is. There is KTM freight line from Kempas to Tanjung Pelepas...This line can be extend to Nusajaya for just few kilometres..I hope that this line will be convert into EDT.

In the end, JB will have 2 Komuter line which is Nusajaya-Kempas-Pasir Gudang and JB Sentral-JB Sentral 2 (Senai)

Johor Government Committed To Upgrading Public Transport System - Ghani
February 01, 2010 21:38 PM
http://www.bernama.com/bernama/state...=472619&cat=st

JOHOR BAHARU, Feb 1 (Bernama) -- The rapid bus transit system will be introduced in Johor in the state government's effort to upgrade the public transport infrastructure and system.

Menteri Besar Datuk Abdul Ghani Othman said the rapid bus transit system would be able to compete with the light rail transit system in terms of capacity, service network and accessibility.

"The government is highly committed to realising the projects and initiatives to improve the existing public transport system," he said at the launching of the Iskandar Malaysia bus service at the Kota Iskandar terminal in Nusajaya Monday.

The text of his speech was read out by state executive councillor in charge of Housing and Local Government, Datuk Ahmad Zahri Jamil.

Abdul Ghani said the state government would implement a number of projects to support the rapid bus transit system such as the 'park and ride' facility, pedestrian walkways, automatic ticketing system and integrated terminals.

He said an in-depth study on this southern city's rail system was being undertaken to identify the most suitable system, and to assess the feasibility of the project and benefits for the people from the socio-economic aspects.

"The study will assist the government in development planning and in determining funding for an alternative public transport system in the future."

However, he stressed that creation of a smart public transport system could not take place overnight.

The Iskandar Malaysia bus service launched today, plies 16 social service routes not serviced by commercial bus service providers, using 34 buses from three selected local bus companies, namely Pengangkutan Maju Berhad, Handal Indah Sdn Bhd and Kenderaan S&S Sdn Bhd.

Kempas to be site of railway's southern hub
2010/07/10 By Ben Tan
http://www.nst.com.my/nst/articles/2...h&client=opera

WITH the impending relocation of the Keretapi Tanah Melayu Bhd (KTMB) railway station from Woodlands, Singapore, to Malaysia, the state government has allocated 80.9ha in Kempas for the purpose.

Menteri Besar Datuk Abdul Ghani Othman said the plan was based on the 1990 Points of Agreement between Malaysia and Singapore. Singapore would develop a high-speed mass rail transit (MRT) hub in Woodlands.

"We will have to move the KTMB train station in Woodlands to Kempas for that purpose," he said in reply to questions from Tan Cher Puk (BN-Johor Jaya), Jaafar Hashim (BN-Senggarang) and Lau Chin Hoon (BN-Pemanis).

Ghani said with KTMB's move to Kempas in place, both countries could focus on upgrading their transportation systems, culminating in Singapore's MRT system being connected with Iskandar Malaysia's planned vast rapid transit (VRT).

"Singapore's underground MRT system in Woodlands will be connected with our VRT system in Johor Baru."

He said the VRT system would initially have three routes.

This will pave the way for the development of the KTMB land in Kempas into a southern rail hub similar to KL Sentral in Kuala Lumpur.

Ghani said the KTMB railway issue was a priority as it had been pending for the past 20 years and needed a "win-win" settlement for both parties.

To a question by Datuk Osman Sapian (BN-Kempas) with regard to the end of Singapore's water supply agreement and a review of the current rate of 50 sen per 1,000 litres, Ghani said the republic would return the Skudai water treatment plant to Malaysia for free.

"There is also an additional 60-year water supply agreement with Singapore that will end in 2061. Several years ago, we had discussed about the review of water rates for the 60-year agreement, but there was no firm decision on it."

He said contentious issues with Singapore, such as water supply and a new bridge to replace the Causeway, would have to be discussed separately.

Uhmmm so the JB Sentral build along with the new CIQ won't be used? I understand that Kempas is quite a distance from the JB's CBD, and finally, what the hell the 'vast' is supposed to mean? I assume its a new euphemism for BRT, but does that mean that MRT won't go to Johor, just be connected to that VRT thing in Woodlands?

Until this Kempas project has been finalized by both federal and state officials, I don't think we should start jumping to conclusion. It needs alot of money to realize a big project and often our state government does not have the funds nor the capability to materialize big projects. We need to relay on Federal support. So without our PM or DPM or Cabinet Ministers formally announcing this project, don't believe what he said.

Never heard of this vast rapid transit term before. It must be a new type of transport system in the world beginning in JB.

JB Sentral will still be the rail hub for JB and travel between JB and Woodlands in Singapore.

I believe the idea is to shift commuters out of the buses and onto trains and/or BRT (the VRT described in the article) - but they will still change trains at JB Sentral and pass through the CIQ before they can board the MRT extension.

Kempas Sentral will be the rail/public transport hub for Johor-Iskandar Region - and there will be freight travel between the ports of Tg. Pelapas and Pasir Gudang and the hub at Kempas.

Cheers, m
